Now I'm also thinking it might be Dryad (don't know her name right now) who according to my theory is that girl Nikolai has had that misunderstanding with as seen in the scene where Nikolai decided to return to Mari to clear up their misunderstandings. That misunderstanding might even be the cause of Nikolai's fear of/inabilty to keep calm in crowded places.
