Maybe just small steps at first ;-) The mage commander can teach him how to behave like a legionnaire. Guide him to go a less suicidal path. Give him more tips to free him from his cluelessness. Hopefully it will influence the story not ending too quickly.

Not at all I just like guessing stories. Hopefully it influence the story to be unpredictable

Erick Thiemke

do you really want spoilers?

Sincere

So is the mage going teach him how to be a mage. Guild him to go a path. Give him more essences. While scheming on how to leave together. Both growing stronger. While our MC is hunted down by the emperor for his void space. Where they find other worlders to ban together to fight the empire joining sides with the fire mage

it is magical tracking with the blood and in the next chapter you learn the legionaries are not as important. as for preservation of the blood - aura magic like mentioned that kept away the rats or control the weather would be available to keep blood viable. the legionaries are tracked for a few reasons...1) elite soldiers that have revolted in the past, 2) they are usually close to a mage, 3) the legion volunteers are usually blood-related to nobles like Brutus is the bastard of a bastard of a baron. 4) the conscripted legionaries are not as important but i was thinking in terms of Sparticus' slave revolt....maybe some legionaries in the past were taught to fight and opposed the emperor

The blood samples being kept as a way of tracking is a clever touch but also a stretch to expend that much resources on maybe tracking a random criminal recruit legionnaire. Mages and other high born I could totally buy it though. They're relatively few and worth the effort. FWIW the blood should go bad (as in rot and break down even at a DNA level) after 5yr or so short of magic storage (which probably isn't feasible given how many samples they'd have to store) or cryogenic storage at -80C to -150C with glycerol as a cellular protectent. I doubt they have the know how or tech for the latter. I nitpick but I do like the story ;)

Castile has an interest in maintaining a degree of denial. In return, Eryk is not allowed to confirm his abilities to her. He can perhaps only stimulate her assumptions. He can't be her padawan. She can't really be his mentor. She can point out his flaws, such as his weak backstory. She can tell him, generally formulated, sources of help. The whole thing is a ride on the knife's edge.

Silver Beard

If he's going mostly in with Castille- he should let her play with the Amulet he's been hoarding in his space. See if she can figure out what it does. Absolutely find a way to increase his mana attributes. It's nice to be 'super human' but he needs to be able to use his abilities without bottoming out all the time.

I wonder how efficient the Legion's administrative bureaucracy can actually be. Let's consider the problem of leaderless remnant companies (a.k.a. the survivors). Let's take Durandu's people: After his death they were distributed between Gregor and Castile. After Gregor's death, these survivors also fell to Castile. Numerous legionnaires fell again while fleeing Macha. How the hell can the Legion keep track of who's fallen, who's been captured, and who's been deserted? It would also be interesting to find out whether the Legion operates any kind of memory culture. Will the fallen be honored? Are there memorials? Then it occurs to me: if I haven't lost track, Castile Lompanie is no longer at target strength. Will the company in the capital be increased by new legionnaires?

Wasn't black clothing really rare? only aristocrats and so on had that kind of money, also if he wanted to not stand out i think he just did the opposite, if color is the fashion then going with the fashion would blend in better, No? For now this was my only logic problem with this story so far... also i dont think it ever got talked about but what kind of climate does the capital have, if its also similar to italy, i definitly would think twice about buying black "thick" clothes, also didn't they wear sandals? why so many socks? all boils down to climate i guess... so?

striderfighter

I take it more like a I'll scratch your back and you save me before you try to save anyone else

Nicholas Ramage

I liked the purchase of civilian clothes. The time window was plausible and the acquisition expands Eryk's tactical possibilities. I don't think Castile has an offensive resistance against the Emperor in mind now. I'm thinking more of a simple pact between Castile and Eryk. To ensure their continued survival. In further missions of her mage company, the abilities of Eryk would be very useful. However, it will be a bit difficult to hide this from the other legionnaires.

Nicholas Ramage

Nice thought. ... But that wouldn't work. If Castile simply disappeared, her legionnaires would be the first to be questioned. Eryk's backstory isn't robust enough. Again an interrogation by truthseekers. Too risky.

DaShoe

I say she ends up inside his storage space for several years so they stop hunting for her. He finishes out the enlistment in a cushy job. She lines up for him before she "disappears."

Lemes

Well, apart from the time spent buying clothes, I really liked the direction the story is taking. That said, I only have one observation to make about this character's narcissism. Sometimes he reminds me of those bodybuilders who can't walk in front of a mirror without blowing themselves a kiss. It's okay for him to be muscular and aware of it, but I don't think there's a need to emphasize that in practically every chapter. It ends up feeling a little forced. thanks for the chapter.
