This is a statement that should raise red flags for Serguis, based on how truth telling magic has been shown. Eryk should at least be saying: "ABOUT this large, Centurion.” That way, registering as true makes sense as his actions are stated as approximate, and a keen observer could easily catch him as lying with things like this.

i just note "corrected" so you know I use them!!!

Well Sergius is nasty piece isn't he! Thanks 📖🍿

Castian *had his cohort, not so much, and I had a feeling I would be seeing them again. Before my litter returned from the nightly training, a man in Hound clothing came up the stairs. He looked around the room and asked, “Eryk Marko?” I nodded. “*Grag your things, we are leaving. Meet us at the west gate in thirty minutes.” Castian plus his cohort, not so much, and I had a feeling I would be seeing them again. Before my litter returned from the nightly training, a man in Hound clothing came up the stairs. He looked around the room and asked, “Eryk Marko?” I nodded. “Grab your things, we are leaving. Meet us at the west gate in thirty minutes.”

Welp! That is dirty. I guess I know the answer but I won’t spoil it.

Rahul Paul

Mc using his dimensional storage to save them

Space Cadet

The empire is full of entitled pricks. I suppose that is how rome was portrayed back in ceasars time. All humanity was bludgeoned out of you.

Jordan

Since I couldn’t speak Telhian at the time I ended up in legion to pay my fines.” …I ended up in ‘the’ legion to…..

Ivan Kanewske

If they stabbed him and left the weapon in, his void could eat what was in him, but unless he killed the person they would then realize he had void magic or something

Tetsu-nii

Wow, Sergius is a real piece of shit. I'll be glad to see him die.

Tetsu-nii

Typo (I really hope you can remove all these editorial comments of mine later): /Keep charcoal on you to run into the markings./ Should that be /[…] *rub* into …/?

Tetsu-nii

Might be too late to change it everywhere, but /I was an Empire Hound/ should probably be /*Imperial* Hound/.

Tetsu-nii

Punctuation: /“Fine,” he grunted. These pups are only half-trained anyway. “When is the training cycle complete?”/ Move quotation mark from before "When" to before "These".

Tetsu-nii

???: /five teams of five/ Shouldn't that be *three* teams of five?

Daniel kanevsky

Also now he could just use his belt as a red herring. "You're space is so big!" "No, it's the belt." Some may suspect his space is big but only Castile and Zyna know it for a fact, and they need to keep quiet as badly as him. Some day it'll get out, but Eryk will be gone by then

yohan gu

@Nightrider For the conclusion about what Eryk must do: the difficult part is precisely making something believable without killing the kids. That's where he'll have to show ingenuity. On the first part about the nature of the empire: the nature of the emprie towards common people is different than towards the elites. It is what Tocqueville would call tiranny: there is arbitrariness, and occasional high degrees of violence, like with this murder that has been ordered, but it is directed towards specific people who orbit close to power. The rest of the population is not directly impacted by this brutality. In general, if you don't come close to positions of power, you're fine (read: free from arbitrariness, protected by the law, and life in this Empire is good for common people from what we've seen), it is not a modern totalitarian state. It is when you are rich, have powerful magic or own powerful artifacts that you come under scrutiny. This merchant and Eryk are both examples.

Erick Thiemke

no it is purify self. even if someone stuck their hand inside his mouth they would be able to resist the spell form

Mubarak Sulaiman

Out of curiosity can he use his void spell form as an attack? If so how would it work? I see it as him wrapping it around his hands and punching into someone’s head or defensively, he could wrap it around the place someone wants to stab him

JollyRodger

Sniff sniff,... I smell a couple kids getting yonked into a storage dimension. Then this whole thing going pear shaped.

Andrew

Gray your things was changed to "Grag" instead of Grab.

Silver Beard

@Author- but isn't that why everyone wants him... he's a walking mage company, can do what they do... and walk away like it's nothing special

NightRider

I am surprised! The idea of killing Janus’ children is to leave a bloody warning message, that anyone who acts against treasonously the Emperor will pay a high price. The more horrific the scene left behind, the less chance of anyone else repeating the same offence! If the bodies are stored in Eryk’s space, it doesn’t leave that horrific bloody brutal message behind, the Emperor will be displeased and Serguis will be suspicious. This is the Roman Empire, which is callous and indifferent to the suffering of the common people, a place where bloodshed, slavery and brutality is commonplace! If Eryk is to survive and remain under the radar, he must kill the children (quickly and as painlessly as possible), and then leave a bloody violent murder scene behind with the gutted and dismembered corpses of the kids. I emphasise with Eryk, but this is one distasteful task that is impossible for him to avoid and must be done to earn his passage into Serguis’ grace! Serguis is an asshole who is expecting a result like this.

I was thinking since the Mayans already did that, so they have no cultural hostility towards human sacrifice, and there is a practical reason to do so on Desia, the practice would be kept up and expanded

Erick Thiemke

The hounds do track and kill lesser monsters. But if they find something strong, they call in a mage company. They are more scouts, anti-spy, spy units. The for instance are not going to be hunting giants as the one shot kill is too likely if the giant get ahold of one

yohan gu

Oh, since they're Mayan... would they be into human sacrifice? In a world where you can collect power from killing other humans, it would make sense that cultures with ritualized murder, like precolombian civilisations, exist. And we could have a juiced up noble/warrior/priestly class that gets fed essence from the regular sacrifices.

Erick Thiemke

think i got them all

Erick Thiemke

Tsinga is Mayan....he has no chance to learn it in a short time. his only recourse is getting an amulet

Erick Thiemke

corrected in master

yohan gu

“They should have already been here,” Centurion Silas grumbled. -> “They should have already been here,” Centurion Sergius grumbled. Sergius stood and collected the three sheets on the Val, Sigma, and myself -> Sergius stood and collected the three sheets on Val, Sigma, and myself Octavian paused and looked at me -> Cornelius paused and looked at me “Gray your things, we are leaving -> “Grab your things, we are leaving

Daniel kanevsky

He could spy abroad, kill monsters, infiltrate a smuggling ring, kill/turn spies within the empire, track down and kill deserters, infiltrate an orc camp, scout for armies, assassinate military officials

yohan gu

For the space, the conspirators we have seen know it is a bit bigger except Zyna that has seen it being much larger, the Bartiradians and Maveith know it is absurdly big and some members of Castile's company (not even all) know it is somewhat larger. I haven't kept track for Castile's group, but I'm not even sure anyone beyond Adrian is informed. For the Tsinga language: you are right. He should learn it, but it would not be that easy. He can get books and learn to read it, but he would need to find an unsuspecting Tsinga speaker to train his understanding and pronounciation.

yohan gu

1) The hounds are supposed to hunt monsters, no? Let him kill some of them as part of routine hound job: some people got killed in a suspicious way, suspected monster attack, hound Eryk sent to investigate, tracks down the monster and defeats it. This can happen both in cities (come hither, illusion essences) or in the countryside. 2) He has experience dealing with pathfinders and the Boutan orcs are the major concern of the western empire: he could be tasked with tracking their agents and killing them. They probably would not expect him to repeat the 1v9 exploit, but now the situation is different than before: it benefits him to appear like an overachiever, so he could (with the excuse of wanting to ensure the missions are done quickly, before the informations get old, for example) be bold in attacking solo groups of orc infiltrators. 3) Missions to gather intel in enemy territory are taylored for lone wolves. He can't speak the language yet, which is an handicap, but he could make a show of learning it quick to please Sergius, and then be sent into Boutan territory to spy. 4) The same lone wolf into enemy territory rationale holds for assassination missions that would logically be undertaken: the orcs wanted to assassinate the talented mages of the empire? Let's assassinate some of theirs. They wanted to kill the displacer mage? Let's kill an important Shaman. I just hope that, for these missions, unlike with the kids where I'll be happy to see him store them to save them, since they are neither the Empire's enemies nor a threat, he actually accomplishes them without bonding with orcs a la griffin rider elf girl. Also, killing orcish mages may give him magical essences, and that is sorely needed. 5) Isn't there some vert inhospitable lands between the empire and the orcs? Mapping out the monster presence there, like a tally of the monsters present and what is their territory would seem like a necessary undertaking prior to military manoeuvres, and the hounds are the monster and tracking experts, so I can see the hound squads getting each a sector where they need to scout monster presence.

Silver Beard

Collusion between goblins and orcs would be a hot bother for the Centurian. Eryk would definitely get some solo time.

Andrew

Or Grab

Thresher

There is no way anyone still thinks his space pocket is only 15 inches. If the centurion even did a little bit of digging I’m sure he could find that out. Also, it’s crazy to me that Eryk still hasn’t attempting to learn the tsinga language. I mean he literally has the amulet and had ample time to use it while working for the high mage. If he is caught in that lie the centurion will have him tortured immediately.

Angus

“Gray your things, we are leaving. Meet us at the west gate in thirty minutes.” Get*

Angus

More likely to be Cornelius, He would know what Sergius has been up to.

David Weller

“He has been spending too much time with Octavian. He may run the Hounds in Octavian’s province, but their interaction smells like two-week-old fish.” Octavian paused and looked at me. “Go get yourself a horse and camping gear, Hound.” I believe Konstantin??

BubblyGhost

Time to shove some peeps in a dimensional space lol

Andrew

Thanks. Found a typo. "Gray your things..."

Zurko

maybe a mission where he has to tail a mage not registered by the empire, that leads to a small gathering of other mages. or maybe similar to Macha where there is enemies from other countries in the empire already.

Erick Thiemke

Yes a book and night sight goggles

Silver Beard

Thought he Eryk was getting night vision goggles?

Thomas

After he "kills" the kids have him plant false evidence on some noble to advance Octavian's position.

Justin Garrett

Lol was stressed anticipating the next chapter until I saw the spoiler. Hooked to find out what happens with sergius he seems very villainous.

Doug

I think some type of insurgency or sabatour work would be nice. Think of the scouts during the siege in books one.

Andrew

Thank you!

visigoth

Sheeesh spoiler. I bet they’re goin in the box!

TheAlreds90

Would love to see some clandestine work in another country but not sure if that fits what the Hounds are usually tasked with.

TheAlreds90

Ah that sweet nectar! Tyfc!

Erick Thiemke

2nd of 4 for cycle. taking suggestions for mini-missions for the Hounds. bit of spoiler but he doesnt kill the kids
