Well that ain’t good.

Erick Thiemke

No, I track what the mc has on an excel spreadsheet but some things in the narrative I forget or don’t record

H

Has a master list been made of all the abilities/spells/artifacts? That every character has.

Jack Trance

I don't know if this needs to be corrected, but the chapter title is: A Soldier's ife - 236 - Crossroads

Nick Nicholson

Bro please peace out. This empire has sucked from day 1.

Karnnie

You are correct, I was being very critical and perhaps I should not have been so. With that said, I simply felt like he could have dont more than knock down a few trees instead of sitting inside of a rock for a day. However, doing so would have been suicide and I understand that Eryk would not go out of his way for an empire he is not a part of nor plans to stay in.

momo2009

Cool that the tree was a monster. I found it realistic that he couldn't stop the fleet. I think the only way to stop a couple ships is to pick up some large rock in his space and then drop them over the ship to sink them like killing the monster in the dungeon but he would have to be close and that it too dangerous.

Moatdog

there are a ton of ships, as good as Eryk is he is not a one man army. We haven't even seen what the priests can do and I doubt they only heal which torment would block. He'd probably be able to take out a decent amount for a solo hound

Moatdog

You tell me how he can reasonably delay a fleet of war orcs with priests without just getting himself killed. Gnolls have already been established not to be one of the races that can not be reasoned with (at least in the empire there could be civilized gnolls somewhere) and it wasn't like he was going to reroute when he's following the ships. Frankly I find your standard unreasonable, Eryk has always done his best for other people with the exception of risking his own life. If he thought he had a chance he would have done something. I suppose he could stop one ship by creating a hole in one side but that's only one.

Karnnie

Over all I am not happy with this chapter at all. However, I can understand that Eryk's mindset is not to follow orders or even engage the Orc but simply to piss off and not endanger himself. Still, I would have loved if he had at least tried to delay them, it is basically trivial for him with all of his spells and yet he did nothing but sit back and watch them pass. I am over all very disappointed in the MC. He seems to be a good guy who wants to help and feels guilty about attacking people but then goes out of his way to attack two sleeping gnolls, then he does absolutely nothing to stop the fleet, kill the orcs, or kill any of the orc priests. Knowing good and well that the orcs are going to sack a city AND kill hundreds if not thousands of innocent people. You cannot have it both ways here. Either he is a self-serving person or a selfless hero, you cannot ride this line and have it both ways and still seem believable at all. He could have delayed these ships easily and yet he is allowing them to sail on and murder. He cannot outrun sailing ships being pushed along by magic.

Erick Thiemke

i edited the previous chapter to have him take it as it made sense and leaned on the readers hate for Sergius

Caledon Smith

Didn’t he just give it away to Aesop, or was that another amulet?

Silver Beard

But he might not be alone... the Goliath's he sent toward Mavieth were impoverished, weak. He could over take them easily with his attributes. In time. He emptied his storage with Zyna... so while he has currency, he doesn't have provender for a group anymore.

Silver Beard

We all know he can kill Orcs; torment actually might be a problem as it inflicts a lot of pain- shouts, crying is not good for a silent killer who relies on stealth. It's the humans he will have to kill to achieve his purpose that is in question. The Centurian and his son will make his life a living hell if they survive tell on him.

Eryk vs Aesop is coming

Erick Thiemke

yes - not that he needs it

Erick Thiemke

yes, they don't collect samples of the conscripted legionnaires, but tell them they do. it would be too much work to track legionnaires that have a higher likelihood of death. the blood samples are mages, first citizens, and volunteer legionnaires (who are likely illegitimate children of First Citizens)

Erick Thiemke

no that was Antonia, and Zyna gave her pigs blood

Dean Troub

The hounds also got a blood sample when he joined the hounds, but I don't think it said if it was his real blood or pig blood that they received.

Deliver roo

Actually while Eyrick thinks the empire has got his blood sample I remember that the author left that element uncertain. Also for what the MC knows the only threat to the empire left unchecked are the orcs. The elves are basically dead as soon as they meet the emperor and we learned in this chapter that Tiberius has been sent to confront the Bartidians that have already been weakened in a previous campaign. So while Eiryck could count on the empire getting smaller its collapse doesn’t seem so sure. In fact people are even planning to change the emperor himself.

Caledon Smith

According to the author, they do not have his blood, but he thinks they do. They took it when he joined the legion but they didn’t keep it as it’s to much hassle to do that for unimportant people. He goal for the archives is to free Castile

Deliver roo

Before he is going to escape the empire he needs to gain enough trust to enter the archives. Failing to do basically everything they are asking him to surelly is not the best way to achieve his objective. At least it seems he is tring alternative ways to reach his goals, otherwise he could be left waiting for years.

BubblyGhost

Fairly sure they do have his blood to see if he's alive/to track him. On top of the fact I doubt they would ever believe that orcs would ever take a hound as a slave. Otherwise though there's really just not much of a reason to do that, he's going to betray the empire soon, and it looks like the empire will collapse anyways with the orcs and elves banding together and the emperor being insane. If he destroys his sample and just tosses the book away, they'd assume he died either way.

Caledon Smith

Question, why not write in the book at the end here something like”I have done everything i could to stall them within reason but I have one more trick that might work but it is risky which was why I haven’t tried it yet as I will likely be found afterwards.” Then he could write a short statement/final words before ending that if he fails to respond in the morning he either didn’t make it or was captured. Then he could use this moment to leave and head to the archives with the Empire thinking him dead or a slave. Which would be the perfect cover for leaving. Just seemed like an obvious scenario option that he could take at the point. If he thinks they have his blood to track him then he would be safe as they would assume he’s alive as a slave, if not they could assume he died.

Lemes

Since Erick has looked at Aesop's map he should be able to reproduce it when he enters the dream amulet space. He will be able to find the caches and collect food and equipment.

Tetsu-nii

I just hope these aren't too annoying. ☺️ I only bother (w/out pay — I'm a writer & editor as my day job) 'cause I so appreciate the story. And all the work you share with us!

Prinny Knight

Morals aside? He surrounded by orcs, are we reading the same chapters? 0-2 for missions, whose? At what point was it his mission to actually serve the empire faithfully, they are the literal enemy he’s trying to escape from.

M van Dongen

Centurion Sergius needs to manage his expectations. 1 guy vs Invasion fleet is ludicrous. He's not Zyna....or the Emperor.

He used the amulet in the last fight and is still wearing it.

What happened to the Armor amulet he acquired and the ring? Surely he took one of them to use!

Thank you for the chapter, looks like shit’s about to go down.

Silver Beard

More interested if he can put his morals aside and do the ugly thing he needs to do... and kill everyone nearby that might tie him to the deed. My book he's 0-2 for missions; he stashed his victims away. The Likable guy can't be stashed this time- he has to die and his Father, etc.

Thresher

Thanks for the chapter. Interested to see if he can make it out without getting caught by the orcs.

Lose the book; likely has a tracking spell too. Toss it in the lake

Wagering the likable guy gives him an Apex of Empathy! The Father... a major of power. Seemed like he was using his gift every moment, every time they ever spoke. Need a lot of aether to pull that off.

Silver Beard

Also wondering as his Empathy rises if the Matriarch's Egg he carried and gave to Reliah (?- can't recall the spelling) will see him as a Father? Relia the Mother; could make an interesting meeting. Collecting wives from all over And then there'd be Renna... running for her life after the seeming fall of the Empire.

Silver Beard

I was imagining a scenario after this all over where he runs into the female blacksmith- his elfish books caused a lot of envy so close the Imperial palace and she had to flee. They meet in some tiny village far to the North (along the path to Stone Mtn). Can't quite picture how that works out yet, but it was a fun dream to play with. Offer marriage for sanctuary and access to the whole library. They'd practically have to sleep together for her to access the library- might as well get some perks from the deal

Andrew

Thank you!
