I question why he doesn't use his storage to just make a whole in the wall or door and walk out of the tower? And it can't be cause he bottomed out he used his mind thing with aether. He also stated before that he keeps a section of his storage free just for situations like this so he would have the space as well. Great chapter though loved it.

Looks like mind palace was a good pick Edits: The [fight] was going to get nasty, and my only solace was they did not have any ranged weapons. The drake crashed into the door, knocking -[crashed] into the wall.

The MC just grows more unlikeable making me wish Konstantine would replace him as the MC. Remember when the MC was pumped to go hunt werewolves? Now he's too busy being a nerd about ether potions, and has to be dragged out against his will to do anything interesting, only to grumble about it the whole time. Maybe a side effect of the crafting necklace is that it slowly robs you of your personality?

Enk

repelling/rappelling - rappel = abseil.

Erick Thiemke

i do read comments before I edit chapters but I am only on 234 at the moment

Mildly irritated that he didn't grab the body of the one Gilda killed... It would also have kept them from being discovered sooner. He could have also harvested the guy before throwing him of the roof, but that is a little dark. Also! He's leaving ANOTHER adventurers guild without asking after healing potions...

The tower was in an area that could only be described as the slums, where dilapidated shacks housed the poorest of the poor. [We had been ignored and avoided as we moved through the foul-smelling streets. → As we navigated the filth-choked streets, the locals ignored us, keeping their distance.] The tower gates were closed and barred from the inside. Using my air shields, we quickly scaled the old sect tower outside of Godok under the cover of night. With the air shields only lasting twelve heartbeats, we had to be very coordinated in our climb. As we climbed, Gilda supposedly monitored whether we had set off any magical alarms. We gained access high in the tower through an open window. [The small bedroom through the window smelled rank and was a mess of dirty clothes and bedding. → The room reeked—a stifling mix of sweat, mildew, and filth, with dirty clothes and bedding strewn across the floor.] I tied a length of the silk dungeon cordage to the bed and tucked the remainder under it. If we had to escape quickly, [repelling → rappelling] down the wall was our fastest means. According to Gilda, everyone was expected to attend a ceremony in the tower’s lower levels. Although the clouds currently obscured Neptune’s Tear, it was a full moon tonight, and the Sect of the Venomous Serpent performed their initiation rites under such a sign. [I was getting a weird vibe of seeing this movie before. → I couldn’t shake the eerie déjà vu, like I’d seen this scene play out before.] Deep in the tower’s bowels, we could hear the forest drakes’ muted grumbling, roaring, and hissing. However, Gilda whispered to me, “Those are not all drakes. Some of those sounds are the drakes’ next meal.” Everything had gone surprisingly smoothly so far, so I had the feeling something would go tragically wrong soon. [How was I so easily talked into this? Who decides to infiltrate what amounted to a cult tower on a whim? → What kind of idiot agrees to infiltrate a cult’s stronghold on a whim? Oh, right—me.] I looked over at Konstantin and grimaced as his eyes gleamed with anticipation. We moved relatively silently to the stairs and encountered our first sect member climbing toward us. She was carrying two large buckets and didn’t even look up as Gilda sprinted forward and pierced her throat with a stiletto. [The young woman never made a sound as the buckets clattered and spilled down the steps. → The buckets hit the stone steps with a hollow clang, their contents sloshing in a foul cascade.] Bodily waste covered the steps and landing. Konstantin opened a locked room with his spell form, and Gilda dragged her victim inside. I grabbed the repugnant buckets and followed. I immediately questioned her brutality with hissing words. [“Jupiter’s cock Gilda! It is just a young woman, and she is not a werehyena!” → “Jupiter’s cock, Gilda! That was just a girl! And she wasn’t even a werehyena!”] Gilda, in her old portly woman’s body, knelt over the body and pressed the blade of her dagger to the dead woman’s cheek. A light stream of smoke came from the wound, and the smell of burning flesh filled the room. Gilda said flatly, [“She is not fully turned. About a month more and the infection would be complete. Probably why she is not with the others being initiated” → “Not fully turned yet. A month more, and she would have been. Probably why they kept her out of the ritual.”] The youthful woman couldn’t have been twenty, her blond hair now matted with her own blood. [I knew that curing lycanthropy was extremely costly, but it still felt like we should have tried to do more than just kill her. → I knew curing lycanthropy cost a fortune, but wasn’t there another way? It felt too… final.] Konstantin looked at me expectantly, and I couldn’t bring myself to do it, so I pulled out the collector and handed it to him. [This woman was not my enemy and hadn’t tried to kill me. → She hadn’t even raised a hand against me. That mattered.] I stepped into the corridor to keep watch. The collector was returned to me when the pair exited, and we continued lower. We didn’t see another sect member as we reached the arboretum on the first floor. [A few fruiting trees dominated the open space, but there were no signs of any sect members. → The air here was damp, heavy with the scent of overripe fruit, but the space was eerily empty.] “Where?” Konstantin whispered to Gilda. Gilda had some emotion on her face as she had assumed we would find the sect members here. [The only sounds were of the beasts below. → Only the distant snarls of the beasts below broke the silence.] “They must be with the forest drakes. Maybe they are part of the ritual initiation,” she guessed. “There should not be more than twenty from my observations.”

Erick Thiemke

he used it in the fight with Centurian Serius and a few times picking locks

Erick Thiemke

once a Witcher, always a Witcher. I mean hound

Erick Thiemke

artifacts are unique to dungeons generally. so the amulet of clarity (the blue one anyway) would have only been found in the Shimmering Labyrinth. I am also basing the collector has only been sourced from a dungeon in the Telhian Empire. The artificers made inferior copies but they are rare. So most essecnes are found in dungeon reward chests.

Erick Thiemke

maybe aether resistance, but i cant imagine the other two in the world mechanics. maybe an artifact but not a potion

Bookworm bibliophile

Yeah he was the only one I remember and he was one of the strongest orcs in an entire kingdom

NovaZero

Orc warlord.

piranha

Are there potions for aether tolerance to temporarily enhance the maximum amount of mana they can use before burning their potential? Same question for aether resistance, aether shaping and so on

Andrew Gonzalez

Only way to counter the space decapitation is really high aether resistance, not getting in range, or another spacial artifact which I assume are pretty rare; only one we have seen so far, from my memory is the belt that Traeliorn wore and he was a highly ranked mage

Bookworm bibliophile

I was wondering if mc is getting this good with the amulet. Shouldn't there be other artefacts that the truly powerful or influential use to inhance the skills and talents of their children? Like so far we have seen only the mc using the talents inhancing tools. Also if they discover mc talents of using space decapitation wouldn't they be capable of easily countring it?

Gwalmeich

Someone needs to introduce Constantin to the concept of vacation. Invading a shapeshifting cult is not my idea of a relaxing time.

Gwalmeich

It's not high enough to perform more than the usual lock picking shenanigans.

SUlex

And demons actually, forgot about those

SUlex

Well yes, intentionally. He has come a very long way since book 1. The progression is steady and once he ‚fixes‘ both his aether pool and channeling there’s basically only the titans left who can challenge him. Have patience he will become OP. Probably after dealing with the empire and finding the other worlders that have been hinted at.

TallyOne

IIRC Konstantin has a sorta telekinesis like spell form? Would be cool to see him use it, felt like it was mentioned 2-3 times but never again. Regardless great chapter as always, this became my favorite story as of late. Much love 👍

Limitations are part of what makes magic systems interesting and fights fun. If he could capture someones heart without his aether bottoming out then boom there goes all the tension in all the fights for the rest of the story. We know its a one hit kill that takes out one enemy and he is weak afterward so he needs to be strategic about where and when he uses it. Without it, he is just a generic OP MC with no real challenges And giving away essences is just who our MC is. He can just dive into dungeons to get more anytime.

Andrew

Thank you!

Erick Thiemke

I just did last chapter. He can brew aether potions that restore enough aether to repeat

Chachi

amazing to see the mind fortress do its job effectively at that. would be great for him to up his mind magic some

NovaZero

obliqued > obliged?

Nick Nicholson

The biggest disappointment in this story is his aether limitations. Every single time he takes someone’s head or heart he bottoms his shit out. For fucks sake can you fix him please? We’ve waited so many books how has it not happened by now. Plus the fact that he is giving away all these essences is insane.

Erick Thiemke

No, this was 2400 words. Usually after a read/edit, I add about 200 words. Normal target is 2200 but you were spoiled by having two 3000 word chapters back to back

Lemes

Are the chapters getting shorter?

Erick Thiemke

one is for posting to RR/Scribblehub and the other is for Patreon. My template has both and I delete one after I start writing

Erick Thiemke

yes - the snake temple

Owen Jones

Wait…was the movie he had seen before a reference to Conan when he snuck in?

Garrett

You doubled your "no permission" at the bottom

Erick Thiemke

I was imaginigng more of an epic fight between Konstantin and Eyrk for this. May rewrite it a bit. Working on Town Builder....at 600 words.
