A Soldier's Life - 338 - Navek's In A Time Out

The chamber was covered in fine web carpets, and it appeared the spiders were trying to cocoon the entire chamber. The ceiling gave off a soft blue-gray light, like twilight. There was no way to cross the chamber without disturbing the webbing.
“The webbing isn’t from spiders,” Navek’s deep voice declared. “Though it’s out of season, that’s a blood moth nest.” We all turned our attention to Navek, wanting him to explain further. “The caterpillars construct these nests high in the jungle canopy. They ensnare birds and snakes in the tangle before swarming them and feasting on their blood, cocooning and maturing into blood moths afterward.”
“They taste good grilled,” Maveith added. Yeah, I wasn’t going to be eating caterpillars.
I stared into the room. “Are they flammable?” I asked, indicating the webs.
“I am not certain. The jungle is humid and has frequent rains…” he trailed off, as this room looked dry. All eyes slowly turned to Raelia.
“If I get swarmed by caterpillars, I will be very upset.” She turned to Baldo, giving the command to stay. Raelia huffed and walked into the room, her boots quickly becoming covered in the webbing. It was an elastic web, and though she had barely entered, the long shadows began moving along the carpeted webs. Raelia’s fireball formed swiftly with a sense of urgency.
When I saw the first caterpillar, I was revolted. It was as long as my arm and as its long, moss-green, jagged hairs ungulated with its body. Navek hissed, “Those are massive. Blood caterpillars shouldn’t be larger than my finger.” I didn’t comment that his goliath fingers were much larger than mine. “Be careful,” Navek yelled unnecessarily as Raelia was just five feet away. “Those spines are poisonous!”
At that, Raelia released her fireball without waiting to charge it to its maximum. As it flashed forward, I instantly recognized our mistake. Time seemed to slow for me as I lunged forward, wrapping my arms around Raelia. My boots made it difficult for me to move, but I reached her and shielded the elf’s body as all the webbing ignited in a burst of flame. I had just enough time to set an air shield in front of us. The fireball erupted in the center of the room, causing all the webbing to catch fire instantly. While the fireball’s explosive effect would have been manageable, the sudden ignition of all the webs quickly expanded the air.
The resulting explosion was many times more intense than the concentrated spelled fireball. I shielded Raelia as we were blown back like a bullet out of a gun into the goliaths and griffin, my air shield only mildly protecting us before it was destroyed. My head slammed into one of the goliaths, and then the wall—or maybe floor or ceiling—I couldn’t tell as we tumbled down the corridor. Disoriented, I took a few deep breaths to find oxygenated air.
I slowly released Raelia from my bear hug, and she coughed. She immediately stood, looking mostly unharmed. “Baldo!” she rasped worriedly and continued coughing. I focused back on the room to ensure we wouldn’t be overrun with caterpillars. The room was burning, and dozens of the worm insects were writhing on the floor as they burned. The smoke was being drawn up, at least, and not filling the corridor.
Maveith was helping Konstantin to his feet, and I reached for my head, my helmet gone and my hand bloodied. I was still in shock, waiting for the pain, but instead of waiting, I channeled aether through my healing spell form. I had a severe concussion that was immediately washed away, and my mind became focused. Baldo was in worse shape, his wing at an unnatural angle, while Navek, who had been in the back, looked mostly unscathed.
I picked up my helm. “Injury check?” I yelled.
Maveith’s voice replied first, “Just got knocked around a bit. Konstantin has a cut on his neck, and we are applying the healing paste.” Concerned, I marched over to the pair to see a long diagonal cut they covered with the paste. It wasn’t very deep, so he had been lucky.
“Cut myself with my blade,” he growled bitterly. “Having a goliath flying at me made it hard not to injure both of us.”
I leaned in to inspect the wound. “Well, I can see why you hate shaving,” I said. He didn’t seem to like my joke, so I left him to check on Baldo. Raelia was kneeling beside the griffin, who was chirping softly, disoriented.
“Fractured wing,” Raelia said, concerned while stroking him. “You should send him away until we have extra healing potions for him.” Baldo was gaining lucidity, and his chirps were getting louder and more pained.
I stroked his feathers reassuringly and had Raelia move away. I reassured the confused griffin, “It is going to be okay. Next time I see you, you can have all the raw meat you want.” Just as he attention drifted to me Baldo vanished.
Navek sat with his back against the wall, waving me off to indicate he was fine. The webs had burned away by now, and only the bodies of the caterpillars smoldered in the room. I walked in and saw the reward chest at the center of the forty-foot square space. I counted twenty-three smoldering sausages—and I call them sausages because that’s what the smell reminded me of—grilling meat. The collector was in my hand, and I was testing it on the first charred worm.
Light wispy aetheric essence pulled into the collector, forming a minor nature essence. The optical leaves turned in the small sphere as I rotated it. Any magical essence was valuable, and I moved to each body as the others entered the room looking a little worse for wear. Konstantin was made for the chest with Raelia, and I collected 20 more minor nature essences. My two unsuccessful attempts might have been due to the caterpillars being burned too much.
Both Maveith and Konstantin had an affinity for nature. Maveith, unsurprisingly, refused the essences, but Konstantin took half of them appreciatively. He would receive a very minor benefit from them, and I don’t think it would improve his spell form much. I wrapped the essences and sent them to my space. With the remaining 10 minor essences and the apex nature essence, I could eventually unlock the nature affinity and learn a spell form once my core sufficiently healed.
Navek was cutting open one of the smaller worms, and yellow goo oozed out. He mostly talked to himself, saying, “It needs to be cooked a little longer.” I guessed Maveith had been serious when he said they were edible. Maveith and Navek worked on setting up a grilling station for the bugs with my thermal stone. Navek explained how they were normally prepared: you removed the head with your knife and then grilled the husk, burning away the green spines. When it was finished, you racked open the husk and devoured the flesh hot. It did smell good once they started grilling.
When they finished cooking the worm, my companions sampled the flesh, each spooning out steaming morsels from the cracked carapace as if they were at a family restaurant. I noticed that Raelia still wore concern for Baldo, but once we acquired a few additional healing potions, we would be able to heal him. Maveith handed me a chunk of caterpillar flesh. “Try it, Eryk, you’ll like it. It has a pleasant nutty taste.” I still passed on trying the bug.
The chest had contained twelve large coins, and a large gray cloak made from caterpillar silk, according to Navek. The cloak was passed around, and I didn’t feel it react to my aether, so I doubted it was an artifact.
Raelia commented, “It appears to be just a heavy cloak. Probably durable and waterproof. A more typical dungeon reward.”
“Probably not fireproof,” Konstantin muttered in a rare attempt at humor.
Ultimately, it was decided that Konstantin would receive the cloak. I had three cloaks, one of which was the manticore cloak that Maveith crafted for me. Raelia possessed her Ranger’s cloak, and both Maveith and Navek also owned manticore cloaks.
I surveyed the room using my earth speak before we followed the only other exit. I found it intriguing that the ceiling of this chamber featured long vents that extended beyond my range. They were too small for the large caterpillars, but perhaps that was how the dungeon fed or repopulated the room. I shook my head at the group to indicate that I hadn’t found the dungeon core.
We walked down the well-lit corridor to the next room, which I suspected would be a safe room. I was pleasantly surprised to find that we had indeed reached a safe room, featuring an archway covered in a flat, oily surface. The group exhaled in relief upon discovering the exit from the dungeon. The entry room was small, and the first thing I noticed was the lack of writing on the walls. Typically, delvers leave messages on the walls indicating what to expect during the delve. Was this a virgin dungeon? Was that why it was acting unusually and not following the rules?
There were no benches to rest on, so we made ourselves comfortable on the floor. “How long till the goat maze resets?” I asked Maveith.
“Half a day,” he replied immediately.
Once everyone settled in to rest, I asked, “Who wants to try the exit?”
“It should be two of us,” Konstantin announced. I nodded as we thought the dungeon had a limit of four. “I will be willing to volunteer.”
Maveith volunteered next, “I will go as well.”
Konstantin nodded to the goliath, “We will explore and return in five minutes. If we don’t come back, only send one person after us. If that person doesn’t return, exit the way you came in.” The calm and rational way he spoke unnerved me some. He was casually mentioning that they could be killed after exiting the dungeon. I chewed on my cheek as they prepared to leave. If we were going to destroy the dungeon, would we even need to test this exit? But then maybe we would never find the dungeon core and have to return and research how to find and destroy it.
When Maveith and Konstantin stood side by side and walked out together, I got butterflies in my stomach. My best friend in this world and my harsh mentor disappeared into the surface. Navek dropped all his gear, only holding his spear, prepared to be the third one to exit. Only a minute had passed but he turned to me, “If I don’t return, promise you will do everything you can.”
I nodded, but it was unnecessary. A moment later, Maveith walked through the oily portal. He coughed a little and was covered in dirt. “There is a small cave beyond. Konstantin thinks a rock side blocked the entrance. We moved a single stone, and it partially collapsed.”
“Where is Konstantin?” I asked worriedly.
“He should be right behind me,” Maveith said, turning.
I didn’t wait and exited the dungeon. I ran into Konstantin on the other side, a thick dust hung in the air lit by his glowstone. He was coughing as he talked. “Only four can enter,” he confirmed. It was maybe six feet to a wall of stone rubble. I sent out my Earth Speak, taking a moment to examine the feedback.
“It looks like the tunnel clears in about forty feet,” I told Konstantin. “I don’t know how far it is to the surface or if we are even near the surface or just deeper in the Endless Dark.”
He coughed a little more before replying, “We tried to move a stone, and that wall collapsed.”
“Can the dungeon hear us out here?” I asked as I covered my mouth and used my purify spell form to eliminate the dust in my lungs.
“I don’t think so, but I do not know for certain,” he replied flatly.
I nodded and carefully selected my words, “I think our plan may be flawed. Navek doesn’t understand the advantages of the dungeon or is willing to clear the manticore room repeatedly.”
Konstantin thought for a moment before replying. “My thoughts on him parallel yours.” We were both carefully examining the fragile chamber. “Perhaps Navek would want to take a bit of a rest,” Konstantin offered. I knew what he meant. Navek was set on destroying this dungeon, and I was getting the sense he would be uncooperative if we decided not to take that step when we found the core.
“If I am going to enter again, someone has to. Should I ask him or just do it?” I replied.
“I will talk to him,” he replied gruffly. “It is best if he chooses willingly. I am certainly not going to volunteer.” I rolled my eyes at the old scout’s reluctance to enter my space.
“Okay, send him out here if you can convince him. I’m going to try to clean this up a bit.” I pointed to the collapsed section of the chamber. Konstantin left me his glowstone, and I carefully moved all the large loose stones on the floor to my available storage. It was quickly getting crowded in my space again.
I placed my hand on the oily surface and tried to enter the dungeon. It felt smooth, cold and unrelenting. It was my first time being rejected by a dungeon, and I could imagine a group of five trying to enter, with the fifth walking into the unyielding wall.
When no one emerged after fifteen minutes, I started to feel anxious. I wondered if Konstantin was having trouble persuading Navek. What would I do if he didn’t come out? Finally, Navek appeared beside me, looking tense. I was curious about what Konstantin had done to convince him. I was sure Maveith or Raelia would have been the first to volunteer.
“What now?” the hunter asked bravely.
I delayed answering, thinking some hard work would get him into a better mental state. I pointed to the collapsed passage and said, “We will need to eventually clear the passage. I will be moving the stones into the dungeon with my dimensional space. It’ll take a few trips, but working with someone here will be safer. Move those stones into a pile, and I’ll collect them.” I gestured toward three sizable boulders he would need to roll. We worked for fifteen minutes, working up a sweat, and our breathing got strained before I announced we were done. The oxygen was getting thinner. “Are you ready?”
“How long will I be…” he began to ask, but then he vanished, and my aether bottomed out. I waited until I could reactivate my slow aging and mind fortress before cautiously touching the dungeon entrance, the glossy onyx surface inviting me back.

The goliaths don't value material wealth like humans. They prioritize family and quality of life. They dislike the Adventurers because they kill for gold. Maveith is always distressed because they dont always harvest everything they can from kills, wasting the life of the animal. I think it is similiar to the American Native Americans. It also goes back to their lineage of serving the stone giants and being a subservient race, helping the stone giants build the cities in Titan Empire that spanned the world. I think it was mentioned there is another city on the continent on this side of the world with goliaths who don't follow the same ethos.

No, alwaysrollsaone has been pretty clear about the goliaths from this island. It's not that that can't or won't fight it's that as a culture these goliaths are pacifists. Mav has said on multiple occasions he is odd for a goliath.

They are not true pacifists, they're just very friendly, and usually very slow to anger, and I always thought that was clear. Do they like to fight? Not usually. Are they unwilling to fight? When it serves no purpose, and is dishonorable, yes. Are they afraid to fight? Not in the least. They can and will defend themselves and others viciously when necessary, and are more than willing to leap into a fray to protect others. And we already know there are plenty of hunters and fishers on the island as well. It just really doesn't make sense for people to think they're pacifists.

Everyone is really blowing this out of proportion. And being so wishy washy. Half the time y'all want Eryk to murder someone that has barely inconvenienced him, and the rest of the time you're crying foul like he's out here killing babies. This dungeon is a MASSIVE boon for Eryk, with the possible mana potion ingredients, as well as a steady and safer supply of Aether Channelling essences which he needs to heal Castille's aether channels. He's always been fairly greedy, and he's the MC as well. You should all be more willing to be understanding if his side, but you're acting like you're reading about a real person and not the MC of a fictional story. Relax. Also, this dungeon has a potential to be a massive boon to the Goliath's as well, which is why the decision of whether or not the dungeon should be destroyed, should be left up to the Goliath Council. So long as the dungeon starts to behave, and doesn't do anything stupid, then it would be a genuinely bad idea for the Goliath's to destroy it if they can instead manage it. Also, everyone keeps mentioning the Adventurers Guild, saying they would want the dungeon. But given Goliath's distaste for adventurers, what makes you all think the Goliath's would give the Guild the dungeon? Who's to say the Goliath's are even a part of the agreements giving the Guild management rights to dungeons? Think about how each country has managed their dungeons, especially the Orcs, which had a special dungeon most people knew about, but which no normal adventurers had access to? You all assume too much. Let Eryk get what benefit he can from the dungeon, and then assume that regardless of the final outcome, the right decisions will be made.

You're being a White Knight. Something Eryk himself is far from being, despite his tendency to do good. He's always been extremely greedy. But it's not simple greed here driving his decisions. This is the first time he's had the chance to settle down and run a relatively safe mass dungeon dive with nothing major at stake in the outside world. This one is especially important to him, as he needs a way to safely harvest as many aether channeling essences as possible to heal Castille. There's nothing wrong with him taking a while longer to decide on whether or not he's going to destroy the dungeon. Also, no matter how Navek feels about the dungeon, one with the kind of resources possessed by this one, destroying it isn't something he alone should decide on. As others mentioned, it should be brought before the local council to decide if they want to keep it and put it under management, or if they want to destroy it to forever stop the Manticore menace. Until then, Eryk is going to get what benefit he can, while he takes time to learn more about the dungeon, in case they do destroy it.

I mean they have problems, and it ain't just the dungeon. It seems like a ton of the Goliaths are literally enslaved on a regular basis. That's not even including all of the other monster threats that seem to roam the world, and ocean that surround them. Honestly I don't know how they count be pacifist and survive, hey but if they don't want to fight I bet the adventures from an adventure guild branch would fight, and they could help even beyond the manticores and dungeon.

For one thing they don't know how to destroy the dungeon. For two the Goliaths as a people never said they wanted the dungeon destroyed. For three it's a pretty valuable resource and at least in the short term Eryk and his party will be farming it like crazy and keeping it safe. Nobody is hurt or dead, something I doubt would stay true if the dungeon found out about the revenge seeking Goliath.

The Adventures Guild would be very interested in the dungeon as they are an international body that controls and manages all dungeons, I am sure that if they got wind of this dungeon they would put in the effort of making sure it is properly cleared. As for resources, I would be willing to say anyone is interested in a place that produces infinite and known resources on a specific timed schedule. One of the major issues any society or world faces is gathering resources, if you knew that every 1-2 days a tree would be fully re-grown in the exact same spot and could be cut down to produce the exact same size, type, and quality of wood, wouldn't you want that? The manticore provides high-quality leather, the big cats provide food and leather, the goats provide food, the moths most likely provide high-quality silk, and there are also the potions and gold. All things that can be useful to any society.

I agree with you. The dungeon has many potentials and as long as it is run frequently the manticore problem will be solved. Many seem to point out that Goliaths don't normally become adventures, and that seems like they are completely ignoring the fact that the Adventures Guild would take over and have others run the dungeon. The Goliaths could just take a small portion of the goods taken out of the dungeon as a simple small tax. This could help boost the economy of the Goliaths, which would be needed if the manticore problem is solved since they will no longer have issues with population growth and can spread out across the island, taking over the spaces the manticore used to occupy. It has also been pointed out that dungeons have become more rare and getting rid of them may have long-term permanent repercussions. The Elves themself have pointed out how they have come to regret destroying the dungeons that were on their lands, though it was good at the time, the overall resources and rewards of the dungeon outweighed the problems with keeping the dungeons under control.

Yes it really is. In addition to just being a larger than average dungeon (just because goliaths don’t like to adventure doesn’t mean their government wouldn’t appreciate a nice fat tax from the adventurers guild). It’s been stated multiple times how rare mana potions are making the golden fruit which can almost certainly be made into a mana potion incredibly valuable. And the tree is apparently one of those fuck-off huge fantasy trees meaning each reset produces a ton of fruit, like an industrial quantity. This dungeon could make the island one of the world’s major producers of mana potions (consider the difference between hunting rare herbs in the forest and plucking them by the thousand off a tree then letting it reset and doing it again in a couple hours), massively boosting their economy, letting them do things like for instance hiring a mercenary fleet to murk the orc slavers who constantly threaten their coasts. The rest - the tons of nature essences, the manticore, etc, are just an afterthought. Something for the adventurers they hire to clear to the canyon room on each reset to do while the goliaths harvest the fruit. Also presumably he’s gonna talk to maveith about it next chapter. Not like they really had a chance to discuss it before with both Navek the fanatic and the dungeon listening in. I predict maveith having some reservations but agreeing they should get what they came for (essences for Castile) then report the dungeon to the council rather than immediately destroying it.

If a sacrifice was required because 1 had to stay behind, it sucks, but the known group sacrifices the outsider. Navek's going to suffocate. At bare minimum, the entrance is beneath the water line. Eryk might be able to survive between his ring of sustenance, and whatever air tight containers they can craft and put in his inventory. Who's going to delve this? No one on this island wants anything from this dungeon. It's on the other side of the planet for the ones who would want it.

People are really down on Eryk this chapter which is kinda silly. Firstly he’s never been some stupid childish white knight, he always looked out for his own interests while trying to still do good when it wasn’t against them. Second he hasn’t done anything permanent. He put Navek away because Navek is an extremist who couldn’t be trusted to keep his mouth shut in the dungeon long enough for them to collect the essences for Castile. It’s not going to be a quick process. Thirdly and finally it’s not like they’re just going to dump him and farm the dungeon till the end of time. They’re likely now planning to get what they need then take word of the dungeon to the council for them to decide. This isn’t just a larger than normal dungeon but has a resource that could make the island the world’s source for currently incredibly rare mana potions. That’s a game changer. It doesn’t matter if they’re not fans of adventurers, this dungeon needs to be harvested on an industrial scale not by some random and also they have plenty of other races around anyway. The threat of monster escape is easily handled with a bit of demolition. Either way it is the council’s decision but Navek is an obvious fanatic and would not accept that.

This chapter makes me hope for the downfall of Eryk. He was asked to destroy the dungeon as the Goliaths have no way to deal with it. Theyre a peaceful people and rarely became Adventurers. He just betrayed Navek's trust and potentially all the Goliaths for I'm sure the Seer will know. All so he can "line" his pockets. Actions speak louder than words and in this chapter his actions are disgusting.

I thought the same thing. 12 large gold dungeon coins is a huge amount isn't it? 120 gold? That's like an appreciable chunk of the cost of what's her names entire blacksmithing shop. Seems really high compared to everything else we've seen dungeon chests give vs the depth, age, and difficulty of the room.

Yeah, it's a seriously dick move for sure, but with the real entrance blocked and backtracking all the way through the Endless Dark and back up out of the mountain crevice through an angry, rule breaking dungeon... it's kinda become a life and death situation even with Mr Cheatcode MC. So I am torn on this chapter. I can understand that from Eryk's prospective they think the dungeon is valuable but is it really? First there was only one manticore in the dungeon. Second only Eryk has a dungeon collector so it's only valuable to him. Third I don't think eryk would put the safety of goliaths under the value of the dungeon. Goliaths hardly ever become adventurers so in the long run they would probably want the dungeon to get destroyed. Finally I don't think Eryk would do any of this without talking to his best friend in the world as he said it.

I am not opposed to keeping the dungeon. I am in favor of it. Just putting a teammate in a timeout without disscusion with the team is the issue here. Would love if the team has a disscuion right after this. 1.Maveth will not be cowed this time. 2. they will find arguments that can convince navek. 3. if they get one more scrath on their armor navek will know he was stored. 4. they do not evev know how to kill thr dungeon. 5. the dungeon is now „found“, if managing the dungeon does not work, you can always destroy it later

Run the dungeon till it breaks. Navek has never been in a dungeon before and he is with a literal cheat code so he doesn’t understand the benefits of the collector. Putting the timeout on navek without discussion is fine for erik and konstantine. Raelia can, if she wants, keep her mouth shut. But maveth is not going to like that. He can not keep a secret like that. And navek checks the time. If the group takes more than 2-3 days he will know he was stored
