I started working on the show when he asked me to design the opening title sequence. I stayed on as the timing supervisor, then wrote and directed an episode for the third season. We talk about his experience developing, pitching and show running an original series.

I voice my usual gripe about the horrible trend of focusing on backstory in contemporary narrative media. The Oxford English dictionary cites the word's first appearance in 1982.

The graph on this page charts the skyrocketing usage of the term and concept since 1800. Nothing all the way till 1982, then shooting like a meteor with no end in sight. Alarming.

Fascinating to hear about Diego's early life. I've heard comedians cite a similar motive (safety) as their reason for taking up comedy. Nobody picks on the kid in class who makes everybody laugh. CN's priorities sound terrible: almost a parody of misguided short-term thinking. They want to focus the company on around mega-popular Adventure Time-level shows while killing the process that will give them the next Adventure Time.
