Guard plays "I'm rubber; you're glue"

Silver Linings

That means a lot to me. It's something I've tried hard to capture (in particular because acts of empathy are what make me feel the most hope for humanity). I'm not a huge fan of the humans-are-space-orcs sort of archetype; they can be fun, but they don't quite capture the essence of the human experience, you know? We don't go around... space orc-ing things. Mostly. I see Ethan as something like a bridge between all the people he meets. If one day all that remains of us is dust and legend, I hope that legend is not of war or destruction or ignorance, but one where we chose to be kind. I might have to write a short story about that. Thank you for the comment. I hope my writing continues to speak to you. :)

Hello dear author, I just want to give you a huge thank you of appreciating, because I absolutely love your writing and view of what aspect of humans makes humanity really shine. I discovered this story and you as an author through \HFY on reddit. Though I appreciate some other authors that focus on other aspects of humanity or are just plain talented wordsmiths that write stories I want to engage with, I very frequently get annoyed by an overly inflated view of human excellence, often only achieved by diminishing other races, thereby making a caricature of humanity and those other races and in so doing completely breaking immersion for me. This feels awkward and I suspect is more than a little based in Western ideas of white superiority. What I adore is your focus on empathy as the pinnacle of human achievement, I find that speaks volumes for you as a person. The fact that you can write a believable hero whose best qualities is that he cares for other people and is genuinely curious about people who are wildly different to himself is a rare feat indeed. Not for the first time, it brings to mind anthropologist Margaret Mead who posited that the first sign of civilisation in humanity is mended bones, because this means that someone who - quite literally - brings nothing to the table for weeks, possibly months on end, has been taken care of by others. I'll continue reading you and I'm hoping this inspires other authors to write deeply human stories.
