Unfortunately I think your eye doctor’s company got bought out by a Private Equity firm. They (legally) prioritize paying themselves before paying employees, rent, or any supplies needed for the actual business. If you’re interested, a book called “Plunder: Private Equity’s Plan to Pillage America” details this happening in Toys R Us and various medical and hospitality industries.

A specialist was trying to have a casual conversation with me during a cystoscopy (don’t look it up if you’re squeamish) and apparently I gave him a look as he responded “Not a good time? You look uncomfortable” Yeah doc, not a great time.
