Woooooow, that Rhodesia joke that Alex references from the director and writer’s commentary made my skin crawl. Alex was right to be weirded out by the joke without knowing the context because in context, it’s terrible. Rhodesia was a British Colony in current day Zimbabwe that was considered too extreme and harsh against Black citizens which tells you a lot about the conditions there. When the decolonization of Africa occurred in the mid-20th century, Rhodesia declared itself a nation and had a white only led government that enacted policies similar to Apartheid in South Africa. Luckily, Rhodesia was never recognized as an actual nation by any other countries. I’m not sure when this DVD commentary was recorded but Rhodesia has since become a white supremacist dog whistle as the ideal ethnostate and “proof” of whites being superior to all other ethnicities. Whether the “joke” of naming a Black character Rhodesia was because of the history of the nation or because it was a dog whistle, it is still disturbing to me either way. I do want to note that I don’t blame the guys for not knowing this; I’m the weird one for knowing this. I just wanted to point it out because it made me super glad that I did not have time to rent and watch this movie.

Vinny talks about the ending of The Butterfly Effect being the grim non-Hollywood take that he enjoyed. That is specifically the director's cut version on DVD. The original theatrical version is extremely the "safe Hollywood" ending. Last line of the wikipedia summary: "Eight years later, in New York City, Evan and Kayleigh pass each other on the street, briefly look at each other, and continue walking."

I went and watched this movie twice in theaters. The first time was to watch the movie. The second time I sat in the front row just so I could turn around and watch the audience response during a certain scene.
