New Ambience: Viking Tavern

What's better than a cup of strong ale, and a warm fire after a hard day of pillaging villages? I suppose you could be a community of pacifist Vikings who just built a school for children, but, I wonder, would the thirst be as fierce? Alas, these are existential questions that I don't have the answers to I'm afraid.
Because I'm still enamored with my new custom, handmade tagelharpa (see below!) I've been looking for reasons to use it. It's got horsehair strings and is played with a horsehair bow so it sounds scratchy and rough, a bit like Vikings, so I'm told.
As rule #12 of tabletop gaming states that you can never have enough taverns, I thought this was an excellent way of killing a few birds. That came out wrong, but I think you get the picture.
I'll start by admitting that the music for Viking Tavern is not authentic at all. It has elements of authenticity (see above), live percussion, jaw harp, and even an attempt at gruff singing. I liked the sound of the oboe and Irish flute against the large drums. And then, I had to add a violin part because it sounded sad and jaunty at the same time.
The ambience is a fairly standard tavern background - drinking, talking, merriment. It really doesn't have to be Vikings.
As this is in Patreon sneak-peek mode, I've included the mixed version, as well as music-only, and ambience-only versions here. Additionally, I created an empty tavern ambience, which is simply the fireplace and some wind/outside noises. Finally, while working on the mixing for this, I found myself listening to the percussion alone quite a bit and I thought they could stand up nicely by themselves, so I added a Music only - Drums version which removes everything but the drums, shakers, and bells.

I think this is great! I appreciate all the instruments you chose for this, especially the jaw harp as we don't get much of that. I'm glad you got to put your new custom, handmade tagelharpa to good use too. ;) Cheers Tim!

Agreed. That's why truth is stranger than fiction. Audiences won't suspend disbelief of truths that conflict with their preconceptions.

According to Robert Eggers' DVD audio commentary on his movie The Northman, real Viking music was "a lot more 'Hey Nonny Nonny' than you might imagine". Understandably, he decided not to go that way with his movie either.
