What Are Some of Today's Best Investment Handguns? (ad-free)

I maintain that firearms are better bought for their historic value than as speculative investments, but there are certainly plenty of people who do both. So, Len and I figured we would discuss what we both think makes a particular gun a good candidate for this sort of investment.

Oh to live in a state where you could easily sell your guns without getting mandatorily robbed by your LGS. I own a Star. I will happily eat my hat if it shoots up in value btw.

I know the decommissioned M17s had FDE controls, safety, slide lock, etc. The Army switched to black control surfaces in subsequent models. I don't know if the commemorative models had FDE or black controls.

Not that I had any guess that Makarov pistols would become valuable but 15-20 years ago when Makarov.com was around, I found their site and became interested in those. I bought several E.Germans that I thought were better finished, poo poo'd the Russians, bought several Bulgarians because they were cheap and OK, couldn't find a decent Chinese one, and so on. Today all of mine have gone up in value. I still think the E.German Mak's are better finished so I disagree with the guys that think Russian Mak's will increase in value. Personally, I would like to trade one of my good Mak's for a Beretta 71 pistol, but those have gone nuts on the auction market, even when they have that non-functional suppressor on them. So I guess I'll wait for the E. German Mak's to be the darlings.

not so much invest but rather shoot, enjoy them, keep them in good condition. only that lawwise I hardly can collect though there sure are amazingly great cheap as dirt ones even I could afford offered. and I just can't jump stuff. what suckes!

The best advice I have on investing on anything collectible is to invest in your own interests. Enjoy whatever stuff you enjoy, and if someone wants to buy it from you for more than you bought it for, then great. If that doesn’t happen, at least you had fun.
OK, I'm in for an M17 but how do I tell the difference between a commerical 320 in FDE and one of the "returned" M17s?
