S&W Pinto: The Wide World of Collecting (Ad-free)

It refers to guns - typically J-, K-, and N-frame revolvers but all some semiauto pistols - produced with a mix of blued and nickeled parts. The name derives from the Pinto horse, which has patches of white and color. The guns were generally old as a way to use up excess parts from different production runs, but they have acquired a niche collector interest.

This sort of thing screams “Harlequin VW”, both the Polos that were made in the 90’s, but especially the old advert of a VW Beetle assembled from a 30 year range of parts. The Harlequin wasn’t made for the same reason, but nonetheless.

My mind immediately went "somewhere else". Did you know there was a National Lampoon BOOK version of "Animal House", not just the movie? You may recall in the movie, the protagonist's frat nickname was "Pinto"? The book explains WHY.

Mixed finishes on semi auto pistols is common. This is is the first factory mixed revolver that actually looks good, as opposed to the recent Ruger .22 cowboy revolvers.
