Fascinating Finds in a Guadalcanal Relic Museum (ad-free)
🕑 Added 2023-06-16 12:00:01 +0000 UTCToday I'm visiting the Solomon Islands War Memorial Museum in Honiara (the capital city on Guadalcanal). This is a private museum run by two brothers on the island, and it is filled to the brim with artifacts recovered from the jungles and battlefields, both American and Japanese. From Coke bottles to 20mm cannons, everything conceivable off a battlefield is represented here, including some really interesting items you might not expect. A few things that stuck out to me include:
- WW1 V-B type rifle grenades used by the US Marines
- Dutch small arms, including KNIL Madsen LMGs used by the Japanese
- Field-modified M1918 American trench knives

My dad was EOD on Guam where I was born after the war and has few Japanese Grenades and morter heads , there was a massive clean up during the early 60’s still going on, a few gi’s kids got killed out in jungle picking up ordinance

just wow. microscope and pick me back up in like.. a year or two. that is some time in between by now. unbelievable there is still so much stuff in the field. I understand eastern front is alike.

I noticed you had a big suitcase on the floor, How much of the stuff was 'liberated' from the museum?

That is an amazing conglomeration. With the volume and wide variety of items, a very large building would likely be needed to properly display the collection.
