What's Wrong with Private Jackson's Sniper Rifle? (Saving Private Ryan) (ad-free)
🕑 Added 2023-06-30 12:00:04 +0000 UTCToday we are going to take a look at how Private Jackson's sniper rifle is portrayed in Saving Private Ryan. It's a great movie, and I enjoyed it a lot - but this sniper rifle is incorrect in every scene...
At the beginning of the film, the rifle is shown as an M1903A4 (which is appropriate) but with a Lyman Alaskan scope (which is wrong). Next, it is shown with interchangeable scopes, the seconds one being an 8x Unertl. While the Unertl was used by Marine Corps snipers, it is not interchangeable with the M1903A4's Weaver M73B1 scope. Just to make it fit on the prop gun, the mounts have to be changed. finally, when it's actually used with the Unertl, the scope does not move like it should, and Jackson tries to change his windage by adjusting the scope's parallax (whoops).

I remember this scene being re-created in the Medal of Honor Allied Assault video game. It was basically impossible to get the player character across the beach within your first dozen attempts, until you figured out what exact path to follow and how long to wait each time to avoid being shelled or ripped to shreds by MG fire. It was frustrating, but then you realize that's exactly how it was in reality. The real soldiers unfortunately did not have save & reload…

At 10:16, you mention the safety flag set for 'disassembly'; on my 1903 that is an unloading position, and the magazine cutoff is the actual bolt release. Since that safety flag doesn't clear that Weaver scope, they must have just left the safeties in the fire position all the time.

You mentioned the vintage sniper matches, I think that would potentially be a very interesting thing to expand on in a separate video(s) for a lot of your viewers who are unaware of those matches as well as the other vintage rifle matches put on by the CMP. If you could fit it into your schedule, it would be pretty great if you could make it out to camp perry on Monday, July 31 for the vintage sniper match at nationals, as it is likely the largest congregation of firing WW2 era sniper rifles anywhere on the planet, and the CMP would likely roll out the red carpet for you for any additional exposure your channel could provide.

there is an icredible amount of sound in the first minutes. after which I was kind of deaf when I watched it at the movies for the first time and someone pushed the volume real up.... I assume those lucky ones whom survived that chitt against every odd were worse than watching a movie. the noise must have been beyond any measures!
