Hogue Avenger: Precision Accuracy Via Delayed Blowback (Ad-free)
🕑 Added 2024-01-05 12:00:04 +0000 UTCThe Avenger is a flapper-delayed blowback, fixed barrel conversion upper assembly for the Model 1911 pistol. It was designed by Austrian Peter Spielberger, and manufactured by Hogue in the US and PowerSpeed in Austria. It is a product that came close to vaporware status, announced at SHOT Show in 2003 but not actually available until around 2011 - and by then at nearly double the initial advertised price.
The Avenger is a very well-made system capable of fantastic accuracy - but it was a commercial flop. It was too expensive, and didn't offer sufficient practical benefit over a simply well-tuned 1911. It went out of production almost as soon as it was made available, and is quite scarce today.

This definitely borders on “Rube Goldberg” complexity. It reminds me of the NCG Gas Gun barrel replacement from years ago attempting to do the same thing with gas delayed blow back (ncggasgun.com).

as a mechanical designer and a competition bullseye shooter, this is absolutely MADDENING. Wonderful concept completely ruined by deeply flawed execution. Any engineer worth their salt will tell you that it's incredible easy to design something complicated, but the real skill lies in making something simple. Had someone been able to refine, simplify, and lower parts count, it would have been a wonderful complement to the Marvel conversions and similar rimfire systems that proliferate in the bullseye shooting world.

It's neat how they were able to convert a standard 1911 frame to a different system. You don't see that much in handguns like we do on ar-15s.
