The GI's Darling: M1911A1 at the BUG Match (Ad-free)
🕑 Added 2024-06-22 12:00:04 +0000 UTCWhat more classic backup gun is there than the M1911A1, beloved by GIs as a backup to their M1 Carbines, M1 Garands, BARs, and tanks? Today I'm running an April 1945 production original military M1911A1 at the match. Note that this gun puts me in the "Big 5" division, so I have to start each stage with only 5 rounds in the magazine.
The 1911 is not a beginner's pistol, but it can certainly deliver if you can run it!

It was a good gun, but couldn't compare with my beautifully blued steel, walnut gripped, target sighted High Power

A Rem Rand was my EDC for years, 40 or more years ago. I fitted a long trigger and ramped and serrated the rear face of that tiny front sight, but that was it. Despite the appearance of having been machined by beavers, it never malfunctioned through thousands of rounds and would shoot to point of aim into 2" or less at 25Y with me behind it standing on my own two legs. I knew what I had, and passed it on to the next gen. Could never duplicate that performance today, with that gun or any other.

When I was issued a M1911A1 in 1975, it was an "Okinawa Rebuild" having fought in 3 wars (WW2, Korea, Vietnam) and had reached the end of its ability to be refurbished (in any case, Uncle was running out of spare parts having last bought some in 1945). It was in such bad shape that I went and bought a Browning High Power with the intention that would be my "go to war side arm" (For te record, it fit inside a GI holster). Ironically, when I did go to wr in 1991, I was issued a brand new M9, so Mr Browning stayed home

I am not sure that is true. I believe it was primarily intended to replace the M1 Garand for non-riflemen, and secondarily, the Thompson SMG. Back then, I don’t think there was even such a concept as “PDW”, per se.

So the Carbine was intended to replace the 1911 as a PDW vs handgun for non-primary combatants. Why did that not happen and 1911s were so widely issued with so many carbines made? I'm sure its a variety of factors, but why not just stick to Carbine for this role?
