Estonia's Much Better Sniper: the M14 TP2 (Ad-free)
🕑 Added 2024-12-27 12:00:08 +0000 UTCThe first Estonian sniper rifle built on the M14 was the "TP" - a very poorly done model with a lousy scope, worse mount, and unhelpful stock. These were made in 2000, and in 2008 a new iteration came out. This was the TP2, which now used a B&T mount, standard stock (with cheek riser), and excellent Schmidt & Bender PMII scope. The TP2 was still a rifle limited by the basic capabilities of the M14 platform, but it was far more effective than the original TP. It did see combat use with the Estonian forces deployed to NATO missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, most of Estonia's M14 rifles have been sent to Ukraine, and the TP2 has been replaced by the R20L; the 7.62x51mm LMT precision rifles Estonia purchased from the United States.

Looks like they applied the "KISS" principle and ended up with a better DMR. I would say they didn't "add" a rubber butt pad but molded a complete replacememt for the original metal butt plate/shoulder rest. Is there a published book/reference on the Iraq war use of the EBR chassis M14s? I have read one book describing the successful use of the M21 in Vietnam by the 9th ID mainly because they set up a Sniper School instead of just handing them out to random soldiers like a lot of units. There are many factors affecting the "success" of a rifle including an army's training and doctrine of use. Sometimes it is not the rifle's fault but the user. Being that the M14 was a "product improved" M1 and the M15 was never produced, it was still a reliable and effective rifle. It still is; my A&R Mark IV is testament to that.
Forgotten Weapons
Because until very recently it was the only 7.62mm self-loading rifle in US military inventory. I never has been used much since Vietnam. The sniper models (M21, XM25) were not really successful, and the "EBR" chassis systems used in Iraq were terrible.

aside all its shortcommings, I love the looks of the 14. and a 14 is sure soft and pleasant compared to a g3.
