This is a typical you have to live it to understand it situation, and a cautionary tale about how peer pressure shall not be underestimated. I still think the Chinese guy is de facto a pimp, he doesn't really want to liberate people, he has a too cushy job for that, yet it can be understood why Muko can be hated, whose life is sheltered by her sister, by Nyarai, who, wherever she goes, only gets exploited. Yes, it's possible to turn the other cheek, but social animals have a limit, after which they may snap.
