Diabetes Awareness Month

I’ll be honest, before this year, I didn’t know a thing about diabetes besides knowing people who have it need to limit the amount of sugar they can eat. However, after being suddenly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes earlier this year and almost dying from the complications, I now know it’s so much more than that. I’ve tried to educate myself as much as I can about the disease and how it impacts me, and millions of others, every single day.
Truly, every day is a struggle — the constant checking of blood sugar levels, the anxiety of insulin supplies, and the hopelessness that comes with the thought you’ve lost control over your life and being at the mercy of the disease. Thankfully, there’s been huge advancements in medicine that has helped increase the quality of life those that suffer with diabetes. I encourage everyone who is interested to take the time to learn more about the differences of T1D and T2D, and learn how you can detect the early warning signs of the disease. 🫶 Stay healthy.

DKA was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me. I have never felt so bad and then having the ER doctor look so nervous telling me that I was in DKA and was days away from dying…. That’s something I never want to go through again 😭 Best of luck in your nursing school!! I had so many amazing nurses help me this year so thank you for your time and effort 🙏

I learned about DKA in EMT training last year, and it sounds very scary. Now in nursing school we just finished our diabetes unit and got validated on insulin administration! I think it’s really awesome that you are spreading awareness and put T1D rep in your comic!

Omg Scott I didn’t know you were T1D too!! 😭😭😭 this year has been a whirlwind of emotions trying to figure out what is happening to me now

Hang in there Ro. I have type 1 and it takes time to learn how to manage it. It's not a sprint to a "new normal", but a marathon. Most days will be good, but there will be bad days as well. Just keep pushing forward!
