Dueling: A popular pastime for the empire's bored upper classes. Imperial duels are usually fought between two individuals with a similar calculated Duel Power score. It takes into account martial [class] levels, overall combined levels, choice of weapon, level of corruption and social standing to ensure fairness of the contest. Fights end with one of the duelists yielding.
In the colonies the pairings are decided by arena owners, to ensure most entertaining fights. You fight until you can't fight anymore.
[Storm Blade] is a magical variant of a fencer class that focuses on manifesting and use of lightning weapons. It is very flashy, and grows to be powerful later on, but in early tiers it lags behind mundane martial classes.
A lot of early [abilities] focus on just being able to maintain your weapons manifestation, instead of giving you more martial prowess.
Signature ability:
[Manifest storm weapon]: Channel mana to manifest a lightning weapon of your design. Higher tiers allow more customization and lessen mana requirement.

I can already picture EXACTLY how the Arena Owner took one look at Ekon, thought to themself "Oh, this is gonna be FUN," and decided to pair the arrogant little boy against some champion-esque behemoth. Meanwhile, Ekon doesn't realize that the rules here are Different, and thinks he'll be in a fair fight... Oh, noooo! ... Maybe his opponent decides to teach him some manners? Maybe a spanking, right there in the arena? ... Maybe Ekon abruptly and ashamedly decides he likes being put in his place? ❤️

The lore so far has indicated that "public" class tiers are literally visible to all. The secret paths are a new thing and are hidden; society probably hasn't yet adapted to the prevalence of secret tiers.

Exciting! Lore question: can people/creatures "feel" each others' and their own classes and levels somehow? Or is this more just for us readers, and these things are not easy to observe/measure in-world?

Not sure if Lvl. 12 is already high enough that he’ll be able to make due against the other fighters in the arena, but Ekon’s text and illustration (to me) just has that clear air of entitlement waiting for some comeuppance… Could make for interesting setups.
