Oh and as to the United States being weird, well, we DO try to be the great American Melting Pot. Which means, we try to blend cultures of others who come here to live, with the overall culture. And THAT as you can guess, gets kinda weird at times... Especially when American (US) English, tends to steal words, phrases, etc, from other nations and cultures, if it's not nailed down...

Yes we can be a bit weird for visitors to our country, but then again most countries probably seem weird to folks visiting who are not familiar to that country. But that being said, welcome to the US glad you could make time to visit us. I hope we're not to weird for you to fully enjoy your visit. As for the drawing, I am glad to hear that your hand is getting better and you are improving with physical therapy, and that you have found an outlet with the novel. Perhaps you can write some of the novel with a keyboard and use your uninjured hand, and maybe do some drawing with it as well to give your other hand a rest and still get some drawing done. That's how I taught myself to write with my left hand, I am right handed but I always thought, what if something happens to my right hand how will I write my name? So I practiced until I could sign my name at least. As for the comics and Alfie, yes, take your time to heal properly and then do what you can and what you are comfortable do at the pace that does not put your hand at risk. We will always be here eagerly awaiting what you do how ever long it takes you to do it, because we would rather wait than not have your artwork at all because you pushed to hard. So what if it takes days or weeks to do the next page of Alfie while you are rehabilitating or writing the next novel page, you have the rest of your life to create and share what is in your mind with the world and if it takes time to do it then the world can just wait a while. We've been with you this long and we're not going anywhere any time soon. We are as invested in Alfie as you are so we want to see the end too. And we look forward to reading the novel and seeing the short comics as well, you make really good short comics and stories. I personally have been following you since I first found your artwork, I think it's been about 10 years now give or take, I'm getting old, 66, so I don't pay attention like I should anymore. ;-) Anyway, we love your work and we love you too, so take care of yourself so we can enjoy your artwork for many more years to come, and please never stop drawing, it would be a sad day indeed if you had to. Commercial success and quality of the art are often not correlated. Tar was a grandiose movie and flopped. Anything new with the words "Star Wars", "Harry Potter" or "Marvel" on it -is successful, but 90% of them are slop with high production values. Selling drugs is very profitable, but probably not great on any other metric. How much money it makes is a terrible metric for everything, but especially art. I highly recommend reading half the first book of 50 Shades for educational purpose of how boring a book can be. That's 400 pages of bad prose.

I work with my hands in a very detail oriented field, but I also have a joint disorder which will slowly destroy my fine motor function. I know how you feel, but its good to make use of what you have while you can. The illustrations you've done thus far are genuinely historical in their quality, and you've made your mark. As an artist as well i know how much it hurts knowing you can't do what you've always wanted. I do think that taking care of yourself is very important and i'm glad you're getting better and found the right balance to things. one suggestion I have in terms of long form story telling is, would you consider hiring an artist to do the art for a comic if you're writing it? If that's not an option you want to entertain that's more than understandable, you should always do what is best for you. hope the best for you and that you have the right creative outlets you need. cheers

I would assume that he has so many ideas and time is limited resource. And if you don't use your time it only gets wasted and there is no way to get that time back. As I personally get older I also see how fast time flies and what feels like recent memory actually happened decade ago.

Man, I remember the first time I realized that completing a comic takes me a few years each and that I'm going to need to start seriously considering which ideas to pursue, because life is short and I won't be able to just draw every single one. I can imagine that cutting that time with an injury was quite a shock - so I'm super glad you found love in writing and that you're taking steps to get better. Also I was a bit shocked to find I'm older than you- I somehow remember loving your art when I was in high school, but now I think it would've been impossible? :P

The one thing you absolutely need to do if you want to publish novels or even just short stories is to find an editor. When you compare a text that's gotten an editing pass or two with one that hasn't, the difference is night and day. That's Twilight vs Dracula. 50 Shades of Grey vs The Reader (Der Leser). Basically average video game level writing versus published novel.

There is something to be said for combining your writing with drawing. You may not be able to do long form in comics, but the artwork and writing could come together to create a deeper narrative. The ability to not only write a story but provide the audience your vision with art work could be beginning of a whole new level of storytelling for you. Once I hit my 40's my eyesight told me to fuck off, after having beyond perfect vision. Unfortunately this is just happens. I am glad to hear that you are making progress on your hand's recovery. Focus on that and let everything else just fall in to place.

I hope you feel better. I strongly recommend looking into voice recognition software -- Dragon Naturally Speaking is a more expensive one, but there might be decent free stuff too. An artist friend who hurt their hand was able to use it, and that would reduce the hand impact further as you can dictate the novel at least part of the time.

Not sure if the interest is there but you should check out visual novels I've always found them to have a good balance between writing and art and I'm pretty sure if you made one it would go over very well. Idk... maybe with time, and a steadier pace you might be able to do a long comic maybe? A page a week and then breaks in between chapters. But maybe that is also not feasible. As someone who enjoys your short comics too, I'm here for as long as you're able. But I also can't imagine how tough it is to be limited on what you've spent your life working towards, what you adore doing and seeing that become painful. Appreciate you and what you've brought us. Just wanted to put it out there that if it's really important for some of your ideas to turn into comics, you can always collaborate with other artists. As a person who spent most of their adult life using their hands and body to make a living, I fully understand how incredibly difficult and disheartening it is to lose that access. It's also a really long mental process because even though the muscle memory is there, the muscles aren't or the cartilage, so it's something you have to re-realize over and over again. But we are creative and we will always find ways to express that creativity within our limitations. An illustrated novel sounds amazing!

One of the most difficult things about physical therapy is consistently doing it. It's easy to stop once you get "better" only for things to relapse because you aren't maintaining it. Also, safe travels. Things are really crazy right now.
