I heartily endorse the High Knob area, too; there are also many short hikes to waterfalls in the surrounding areas. And the Birch Knob observation tower (and Ralph Stanley museum) in my own hometown of Clintwood, in the neighboring county.

Right, we're just telling you that part of KY is a literal disaster zone in recovery right now and WVA is further away than it looks and you'd be kind of going places that aren't gonna have much for you if you don't live there.

I appreciate the suggestions, but I've been to Virginia and since I'll be staying there, I won't have a hard time finding things to do. However, I have NOT been to Kentucky or West Virginia, so if I can check off two other states while I'm in the area for a long weekend that'd be great, especially since they're so easily accessible from where I am.

You might first consider things in Virginia, the state you’re actually visiting, like Natural Tunnel State Park. Southwest Virginia gets treated like we don’t exist by our own state enough as it is, family, without our visitors asking for recommendations in two other states.
