I agree that Scrubs was hugely innovative and influential but I have to point out Saved by the Bell’s use of fantasy with the fuzzy pink bordered imagination sequences and Zack’s ability to “time out” while he talked to the audience/camera. Same energy, Scrubs just went further and, obviously, was about adults.

My problem with Scrubs, which I generally liked most of the way through, was the inconsistent writing for the characters and the wild vacillation in JD’s character between whimsy, competence, incompetence, and outright smugness. And it wasn’t a character arc or growth arc or an inherent part of his struggle. One episode he’s fully supportive of Elliott and the next he’s smugly condemning her for something trivial. I can’t give firm examples but that’s the taste left in my mouth after the last time I saw a bunch of episodes in a short time frame.

I think MASH was the first multi cam sitcom, not scrubs, but I don’t know how much that even counts as a sitcom. Also Scrubs is so deeply informed by MASH it feels relevant to mention.

When I found out who won, I knew for sure this podcast is definitely the one for me.

Um... Ben the laugh track was invented in the 50s. While they may have used a laugh track for those reasons on the Nanny, it was widely used before the live studio audience became a thing.
