YouTube is my go-to platform for consuming content. I listen to the voices of the drama channels, the news networks, and YouTube directors like yourself about issues concerning the platform because I believe it could do great things for the future of content. It concerns me that Google seems to treat YouTube like an asset, not like a platform with billions of daily views and people who have careers that were built off of its success. If Wired's articles are to be believed, they're taking the same sweeping, generalized and haphazard approach to this situation that they always have. But, I'm hoping that YouTube will start making the right changes before they let the platform die. YouTube's not Google+, and if Google would see that and just put some time, care and actual human thought into the situation, they could minimize harm and possibly even improve the platform overall. But, no matter what the endgame of the current ad situation is, I've been watching you since 2012 and I don't intend to stop as long as you keep putting out good stuff.

I really appreciate Dan taking the time to break this all down for us and talk to us about it. I always appreciate hearing his take on things despite my hearing similar stuff from a myriad of YouTubers recently. I think at the end of the day this whole ad situation is going to boil down to both YouTube and advertisers needing to make a choice: will they treat all creators equally and just accept that the video an ad is shown on does not necessarily represent that advertiser's beliefs/preferences? If the answer to that is no, then I honestly think YouTube will very slowly dig its own grave and eventually fall into it. Every day we see clickbait articles and videos titled "THE END OF YOUTUBE?!?!?!?" or some shit, and every time the answer to those titles has obviously been "no," stop being shitty and using clickbait titles. But honestly, things seem to be coming to a head with these ad problems, and if YouTube and advertisers continue down the path they're currently going, I really do think we could see an end to YouTube sooner rather than later. Or, at the very least, an end to individual creators. I'm sure movie trailers and late night show clips will still exist on the platform, but all the videos that keep people interested in YouTube's platform, like Dan said, will begin to leave. Either for another startup platform that treats its creators with respect, or they will change careers and do something else. I would hate to see the later happen. The former would be interesting, but definitely full of uncertainty. Anyway, I hope YouTube figures out that they're only hurting themselves in the long run, and I hope they figure it out soon. I support Dan on Patreon because I realize that just ads don't really cut it anymore. But I also realize that if ads stopped existing altogether, Dan would not be able to do what he does for his Patreon income alone. Very few creators would be able to. Here's hoping YouTube figures their shit out soon, or it genuinely may be too late.

Keep us posted Dan. If revenue falls more, I can up my contribution to keep the good stuff coming. I subscribe to a bunch of channels, but support only you and one other channel on Patreon because of the high quality of the content that I actually want to spend money on.

I've noticed a trend to more and more ads that are long (60 seconds to up to 5 minutes). While I'm OK with watching a 30 second ad at the start of a video, I'm not going to sit through 2-4 minutes of an ad for a product that I'm not interested in, so I skip it. Of course, that probably means no income for Dan (or Youtube) for that ad. I'd much prefer that advertisers keep things short and sweet. If you need more than 30 seconds to tell me about your product, you're doing it wrong.

I think you could definitely continue to make a living outside of YouTube if it goes belly up, considering how skilled of a writer you are. Maybe you could write a book like Ashens did. I hope stuff goes well for you.

I've upped my pledge to $5 for a while until things pick up again (which I hope they will). I'm sorry I can't afford more. Would pay 10x that if I could afford it.

I'm curious how much revenue Youtube has lost over this choice. Literally every content creator I watch has complained about large drops in revenue, some menting as high as 80%. In the short term, we'll get complaints, but the long term is kind of devastating. Youtube is a platform that attracts creators first with general love and passion to create but more importantly a means of self sufficiency to turn their passion into a career. That second part must exist in order to develop creators and build Youtube as an entity. This step is necessary to allow people to shed their 40-60 hour work week and instead develop better, more engaging, and more content rich channels. The customers get a better product and the creator gets a life they love. It's win win. Plus Youtube makes a crap ton of money from it, also win. Now Youtube is shooting themselves in the foot and is slowly bleeding out. They just don't know it yet because they think it's the mainstream junk that brings people. No, it's not. The mainstream junk can be had anywhere. That's what mainstream is. It's general content. What makes Youtube special is the custom content, the unique content. It is this that brings the masses, keeps the masses, and keeps Youtube viable as a product. They just ruined that. There's probably a 100,000 Youtube creators that are now wondering what the hell they're going to do with their lives. This includes many big, very popular creators. These are people that pull a million subscribers into the Youtube world. This is what Youtube can lose, repeatedly. And then the wells run dry because the system is no longer viable for new creators. The cycle stops, and Youtube dies. As much as Youtube may not like it, a LOT of the creation is done for money, and any system in place that limits or cuts that ruins it.

I have wondered this as well. I've heard it claimed both ways, and you're the only youtuber i know of who seems to have any idea of what's going on with ad revenue.

Hello Procrastinators (sorry had to be done) This is interesting to read. Dan's channels are the top 2 that I watch religiously and I do notice that maybe 1 out of 3 I get an advert. I've been a subscriber for about 4-5 years now and as a viewer it makes you think that the YTer has turned ads off for that video because they must be doing well so viewers don't have to wait. Never knew it was as described in Dan's post. I also like that Dan recognises his Patreons on Twitter and the Live streams as part of the revenue keeping the channel going. Personally I don't have much want of merch so I am glad that I can show my support, even though very small, to the cause. I hope that YT sorts itself out because Dan is such an entertainer and with so many videos published every week it's great to see my subscription feed updated with a new video daily. I hope that YT ad revenue starts to increase again as no one here would want to see the end of N3.

I'm with Stephen. On YT Red and here, even subscribing on Twitch through Prime. But would have no problem if you find ways to incorporate sponsors into your world. Or if you'd push Patreon in at least some of your videos (one thing Matt's not wrong about). Not sure how to do that without screwing with the flow, but seriously, this seems like the most stable income element you have.

Not sure if it fits the style of the Nerd3 channel but the odd sponsored video would be a decent idea if it is a big problem. Maybe even sponsored streams on twitch, seems easy enough to get sponsored for a stream.

Anything extra we can do Dan, just say and we'll help out.

A question, Dan. Is there a difference in value to you, between an ad I watch all the way through, an ad I watch partially before clicking on and an ad where i click skip ad? I assume there is but I'd like to know for sure so I contribute a good share by letting ads play through as much as I can bear it.

I have Youtube Red and am a patron, but if it meant stability or even survival I would have absolutely no problem with a sponsored video every once in a while, and I think anyone who can look at the situation rationally would have no problem too.

Glad to hear Youtube Red stayed the same. I don't have or want adblock so immediately signed up for YTRed when it became available because its a great having no ads plus you get google play music. (I hate all the YT red series though) I just hope my views with YTRed are worth the same or more valuable than a regular view for all the creators I support.
