There seems to be a lot of dodgy players in Lindsay Buziak's case. The part that stood out most to me was how she had a gut feeling something was wrong and didn't want to do the house viewing. Her poor father.

Yes - me too! It's incomprehensible that such an act can be planned over a period of time with no regard or empathy for the victim and their loved ones!

I mean even the opportunistic ones are probably mostly planned to. Paul Denyer didn't stalk his victims or choose them for any other reason that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and he wanted to kill. That is extremely disturbing as well. All of it disturbs me.

One example, I have always been extremely unsettled about the brutality of Lindsay Buziak's murder. That was planned and pre meditated for quite some time. It really disturbs me.

Another intense qld one is the "house of horrors" from Toowoomba in 2005 where a juvenile and a 18 yr old (Maygar and Woodward ) were convicted of 3 murders. A third juvenille participated under duress. The convicted juvenile was the first child to be publicly named in qld.

It's really hard to gauge. Some episodes that I thought would be really popular. Weren't. And other cases I wasn't that sure about absolutely exploded. Obviously the bigger cases are always right up there. The Yorkshire Ripper series and Peter Falconio which was such a massive story both here in Australia and in the U.K. are extremely popular. That's easy to understand. But some of the lesser known cases, I haven't been able to work out what makes some extremely popular and other not. I mean all our episodes are doing really well now, but there are spikes in different episodes that don't always make sense.

I think that true crime murder cases are so fascinating because thankfully they are an exception and only happen to a minority of people - it is so tragic when a victim just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! Do you notice in your research a distinction between cases where a murder is premeditated as opposed to being opportunistic?

Even though you have loads of listeners, some cases are more popular than the others (for example, I don't see many discussion about the Katherine Knight case even though it was brutal). Do you analyse such patterns and pick your future cases accordingly? Or is there some other kind of post-publishing research that goes into your listener rate?

Yeah that definitely is an objective. My main goal is just to stay right out of the way of the story and deliever nothing but the facts to you. It is hard at times. I found it hard in the earlier episodes. I did fail occasionally too. I remember commenting on a hedges decision in the Donna Wheeler case. And there is no doubt a few other things. But I think it's something I've been able to do as time has gone on. It doesn't really affect the script writing, I just make sure to bite my tounge :)

I had no idea about Frankston/Tynong North, and I'm from about 10 mins from Frankston. The Frankston Serial Killer was the first I heard and is still my favourite. You also got me on to the fact that there's 2 whole seasons of "Forensic Investigators" on YouTube from the notes, so double wins for me!

But also bringing attention to unsolved cases. Frankston/Tynong North. Lindsay Buziak. Helen Munnings. Lisa Marie Young and others is also satisfying.

I don't really have one to be honest. If I had to pick I'd probably say the north Hollywood shootout. Because only the bad guys lost their lives. Plus that case always blew my mind from the time I saw the footage on the news over here as a kid.

Okay, sorry I must have zoned out when it was mentioned! Another one for the future if they ever release the details is the Greenough Family Massacre. The murderer William Mitchell has been denied parole twice now.

I think not having a certain bias about the details of any case and striving for an objective narrative is something that sets you apart from most other crime podcasts. Was this an intentional decision? Does it sometimes get difficult to maintain objectivity? How does it affect your script writing process?

Yeah definitely I get emotional while going over these cases. Snowtown was probably the worst as far as gruesomeness and depravity. But I also get riled up at the unsolved ones too.

Hi Mishelle. Yes that is on our list of cases to cover. It got a brief mention in the Prue Bird case. But we do plan to devote an entire episode to it.

Oh, it makes absolute sense. I mean, as one of the Australian minority on here, I wish I could get Blue Apron and all that good stuff you guys advertise, but I'm really here for the content. I was more just curious about whether there were many companies around Australia who'd considered podcasts as an advertising space, especially one as popular as Casefile.

Yep I definitely keep an eye out for developments. When it's a major breakthrough like the Claremont serial killer arrest I heard from listeners first though. They were onto that before me. But I do actively keep an eye out on the other ones.

There was a book publisher from here who enquired about an ad for a true crime book. But it never went ahead. Possibly there was one other. A jewellery company of some sort. But again. Never went ahead. They are the only two I can recall. It's not really a done thing here yet. It's mainly US based companies. And to be fair something like 80 per cent of our audience is from the US + Canada. So it makes sense. People sometimes complain we run US ads, but that's why.

No. The vast majority of information on this case is in Italian though. So we had to rely on google translate. Anna did a fantastic job with that. It did make things difficult though. They identified the motive as sexual.

Definitely hardcore history. The research of that show is phenomenal. It's something I really had in mind and wanted to do with casefile. Research research research! And the story telling of Dan Carlin is brilliant. Highly recommend it.

Hi host. I found today's case interesting, and since I'd never heard of it before, I was listening not knowing whether it had been solved or not. I was definitely pleased to hear it had been. I was wondering about his motive, did you find any info on possible reasons why he chose Yara, or was it more opportunistic?

I'm afraid those of us in Brisvegas have been left out - I think Queensland is the only state you haven't covered in Australia! You might be interested in the bizarre murder of the President of the Cat Protection Society- involved the first person in Australia to be convicted of a crime solely on DNA evidence!

It just wasn't worth the work to try and do it anymore especially with the talents of Mike and Andrew. We get. Lot more listens now, we were a virtually unknown podcast back then. So maybe more bands/artists would be open to it now.

Hi Nick. In those early episodes I contacted a tonne of different independent bands/musicians/artists of all different types. Unfortunately I never heard back from most of them. When I did hear back it was usually a month later. I remember emailing the decline and getting a reply back in less then an hour. Which is awesome because they are one of my favourite bands. It wasn't long after this that Mike joined the team, then Andrew after that. So all episodes are now originally composed. But using other bands is something I'm definitely open to in the future.
