Episode Length Poll
🕑 Added 2017-11-01 23:27:00 +0000 UTC When we research and produce Casefile episodes we never set the running time – it all depends on the available information and access we get. However, we are curious what do you prefer? Longer episodes or shorter? And why?Let us know in the comments!

It doesn't really worry me, as if the episode is longer than I can listen (usually because I need to go to sleep!), I'll just pause it and continue it later. As Judith said, some stories need longer episodes (or a series of episodes), and that's absolutely fine with me!

2hours in one sitting is too long for me. However, the story needs to take as long as it needs to properly convey the information. I'd rather two mini episodes if more than maybe 90mins than presenting one long story.

The longer the better. I get far more invested in cases when I get more details about the victims, the perpetrators, and the investigation. Makes the case far more impactful!

I prefer longer stories, but I also like it when you break the cases up into several hour long episodes.

I absolutely love settling in to a long Casefile episode, i figure i can pause it if i need a break and podcast eps ending too soon is always disappointing. I chose 2+ hours however if that means jamming everything in to one ep- rather than a few eps- i think it's better to have a reasonably long ep of over 1 hour with multiple eps per case to get have a good balance of quality and quantity. I love getting excited for another ep when it's part of a series on one case. DEFINITELY do not go any shorter than 1 hour! Of all my true crime podcasts Casefile is still my favourite because it really dives in to the case rather than skimming it.

I voted no preference, but what I really prefer is that it differs and that it depends on the case at hand. That way we get both short and long episodes, and can choose depending on how much time we have to spend.

While I do prefer the longer episode, and I did vote for the second option, I agree that there is no point in just filling for the sake of filling. I do prefer longer episodes to multiple part episodes though. The reason I like the longer ones is because they help you get into the story, and really get to know the characters. My final suggestion, go with your gut! If you feel that you’ve done enough for an episode, don’t extend it just because It’s less than an hour ect etc. When you do the episode, think of yourselves as the listeners, and think is this enough or too much? I trust your instincts.

I agree with Bernadette. I have no preference, I enjoy all of the podcasts no matter the length, as you put in the detail as appropriate to each case. I just like to hear it told :)

Thank you for asking! My first instinct is "as long as it takes you to tell the story in your usual masterful way." But then I remember how thrilled I am whenever I open an episode and see it's a long one.

Maybe between 1:30 and 2:00 hours long, with multiple parts if it's a larger more complex case. Loved the East Bay rapist, Moores murders and Yorkshire ripper cases with multiple parts.

I like the 1-2.5 hour stories but tend to prefer them as a single episode rather than multi-episodes. Night Stalker and Jonestown were too long for me.

Whilst I think its great that your asking us. The Casefile Team seems to have a instinct for the right length including when a story needs several parts.

I honestly don’t mind - but selfishly I’d say longer than one hour because I hate when an episode runs out midway through my drive to work 😂 No honestly you guys do a great job regardless the length!

It depends on the case. I love the in depth episodes, but the ones that are short due to being simpler and more straightforward are also great.

That’s a tough question. While I generally like cases to be at least an hour or more, sometimes the multi part cases are good but then it’s also nice to mix it up with the shorter stories. Port Arthur is a great example of this. The story was told brilliantly and it didn’t need to be dragged on over two hours or a multi.
