But in the late 1940s, it was not a desirable place to live. A number of its buildings had been damaged or completely ravaged during The Blitz, an intensive German bombing campaign during the Second World War that killed more than 40,000 civilians. Many of the larger houses that remained standing were sold to landlords who divided them into multi-occupancy dwellings, with tenants leasing either a room or a single-storey.
