Can’t believe that whoever took the phone didn’t hand it back after knowing what it contained. How could someone be that heartless? What’s the most you could make from selling a second hand Samsung? Surely not enough to make adding misery inti an already horrible situation worthwhile.

So, lots of people can have low or even no empathy-- it's a common symptom of mental illness as well as autism spectrum disorder, among others. Lacking empathy does NOT mean someone doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, or have no morals, it just means that they can't "feel" how another person feels (not they don't CARE what someone else feels, which is lack of sympathy). Putting aside the bafflingly cruel decision to try to blackmail grieving parents, I can only imagine that woman had some messed up risk/reward values, maybe because of severe trauma and/or intellectual disability. Imagine seeing a candy bar laying on the highway and running into traffic to get it. The complete lack of fear of social ostracization makes me think EXTREME long term neglect as a child, like "locked in a closet" neglect. Maybe jail is the best place for her to learn how to follow social rules like "don't see dying infants as money making opportunities."

I don’t understand this world we live in. What she did was beyond cruel. Playing on people emotions. The only thing I don’t get though is, why would you even be holding your phone and responding to this woman while you are with the final moments with your child? That would have been the last thing I’d have been doing.

We don’t know that for sure. She has the advantage of not having a record in Australia when she could have committed more serious crimes in her home country. If she had been Australian she probably would’ve been slapped with more charges due to her previous fraudulent activities.

The sentence seems extremely excessive. While her actions were *extremely* cruel… almost four years in prison is way too much, especially since no money was exchanged.

I love that you began and ended the episode talking about Amiyah ♥️ Jay was rightfully worried people would forget about her but now thousands more will hear all about her through Casefile. Great writing Eileen, it was beautifully and respectfully done. May Amiyah rest in eternal peace 🕊️

This was one of the worst Casefile episode for me, in the sense that it made me feel absolutely awful, I will think about it for a long time. How can people be so cruel? I really hope they get their phone back one day.

Oh this one hit me hard. I lost my own baby girl four years ago to a de novo genetic issue. I can't imagine someone invading our last hours with her like this. I listened to it while out walking with my 8mo daughter. Just incredibly sad what that couple went through.

What a heartless, immoral and heinous thing to do to anyone, let alone a family battling the worst sort of grief imaginable. I’m sad that this even had to be a story.
