Yeah, like Wei Wuxian himself said later in the novel, each person experiences things in a different way. For somebody it may look like a trivial thing, but for another, it will be something they will never forget. Something I noticed about Jiang Cheng while reading this novel again is that he loved Wei Wuxian, but wanted Wei Wuxian to be near him at all times. Even when it was said jokingly, he always kinda tried to prevent Wei Wuxian from interacting with others. It was always "why do you care for them? It's not like they are from our sect." You see this COUNTLESS of times, and it's hard to miss because a lot of those times are comic reliefs but it really shows that Jiang Cheng wanted to keep Wei Wuxian strictly within the Jiang Sect, and more so - by his side. I guess this is why he never let go of that promise.

Yes, Wei Wuxian made a promise to Jiang Cheng, but that was when they were kids. Those promises can't be kept because you never know what life will throw at you. How many people have claimed they would be best friends forever only to not even speak to that same person just a few years later? How many people vow to be married until death only to get divorced in a few years? People change. Circumstances change. Jiang Cheng is wrong to try to hold Wei Wuxian to that promise. I also understand that trauma f***s you up. MXTX really does understand psychology. Childhood trauma often turns children into people pleasers. Wei Wuxian experienced more severe trauma at an early age than Jiang did and so he's got a smoother survival mode than Jiang Cheng.
