This was on a short list of mine that I'm surprised I've taken this long to watch. It was definitely not quite what I was expecting, but fully satisfied what I wanted, and hoped, it would be. I saw a lot of parallels to other movies we've suggested for you (despite the change in focus Disney has had to take that you acknowledged here), and I don't want to call them out quite yet because that's part of the journey you're on! The colors and shapes of the ocean that you kept pointing out stuck for me Moana's reasons for wanting to 'run away,' and it's a consistent theme in Disney, but the reasons for it are still today changing shape. I've been wondering how many of these you'd eventually want to share with your daughters, and I was super happy to hear you say this was at the top of your list for Charlotte. <3 This has jumped to the top of my rewatch list too.

There's a theory I've read that I think explains pretty well why the ocean chose her. When she chose to help the baby turtle instead of going for the glittering conch in the ocean, only then do you see the ocean interacting with her. It saw her cleverness, selflessness, and, more importantly, her empathy. It's her empathy that allows her to save the world by recognizing who Te Ka really is.

I would definitely recommend Frozen if you haven't seen it, and it's sequel. The latter especially at the themes and messages are similar to Moana, for children and adults, in that they are relatable and are great messages to live by.

I always feel Moana is more than just the main character,. It's the culture and its stories and history. This movie is just lush in colour, family and feeling so I can't be mad at it. You're right, a lot of Disney movies have the same theme but it's all the extras in this that surround Moana that I believe makes it special.

It's not just that. I don't really think it offered more outside of that in terms of having its own identity. The only part that stands out about it is the location. Moana is just a Renaissance Disney princess in a nutshell. I've met several girls in real life with her EXACT personality. Whereas I've never met anyone like Belle, no one like Cinderella, no one like Mulan, no one like Rapunzel, no one like Merida. These characters seem larger than life somehow, Moana didn't for me. Maui's jab on the boat "because the ocean told you you were special and you believed it" that's my favorite quote in the film because it's a perfect summary of her character. The film didn't do a good job of telling me why she was special or why I should care.

If you love Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as much as I do then I have no doubt you will thoroughly enjoy "Vivo" on Netflix it's wonderful and I highly recommend it!

also fun fact Christopher Jackson provided the singing voice for Moana’s father (he originated the role of Washington in Hamilton) and Phillipa Soo (the original Eliza) also provides vocals in “Where You Are” for some female villagers! and of course as you noticed Lin Manuel Miranda also sings in the voyagers’ song - he wrote all the music for this movie hence the similarities to Hamilton :)

the first time i saw this movie was in theaters and i cried during that first scene of baby moana interacting with the water simply because of how beautiful the water looked & how pretty the musical score was lmaoooo

I can see that. For JV, who's new to these movies, he probably won't see it that way. But for those who have watched a lot of Disney films before, you can definitely start seeing patterns. Animal sidekick, adventure and self-discovery, the "Dream" songs that kick off every protagonist's adventure...

I'm in the minority here, but I actually didn't get into this movie. Not because it's bad, it's not, but I just couldn't help but feel like they're trying too hard. Like it was a formulaic Disney princess film disguised as a new and inventive Disney princess film.
