ALEXEI

The vast majority of people live normal lives though farming crafting doing normal jobs . its only the outliers that focus on becoming immortal combatants. I mean on his entire planet a tier 4 was considered rich and impressive (granted its a backwoods corrupt planet but still) I dont think everyday violence is as normal as u think probly. Career soldiers still are shaken by loss and injuries and this isn't a medieval small minded country its a vast collaboration of planets and peoples with advanced medicine, arts, schooling ECT some planets of which probly barely have more than just a normal fighting force. At least that's how I've come to think of it curious if its more militant than I'd imagined would need to hear the authors take. But if being a combatant was the norm then government corruption like what duke waters put down would be much harder to pull off when everyones a killer.

I really enjoy this Webnovel so this isn’t meant as a statement that I’d prefer change but rather the difference between the demands of narrative and storytelling v attempting some sort of predictive model of a novel universe. An ancient civilization centered around endless combat would have a culture that raised people with different attitudes than those demonstrated in this chapter. To make a story that satisfies contemporary readers I think Mantis is threading the needle very well. It is just that this particular chapter which is great for establishing relationships and character must come at the cost of what I would think the world building would have to be. Ideas of death, maiming, risk and risk tolerance would have long since had norms and mores and probably rituals established around them. A culture that failed to do this would have fallen to the civilizations that enabled people to thrive under these stresses more effectively.

ALEXEI

People overreact when they are upset seems like a real reaction to me

Eric

Its profoundly unfair for the Empress's daughter to tell the orphan boy not to take risks when risks are the only reason he is able to stand next to her in the first place

Valinora

No, made out like bandits is a fairly common figure of speech

Bobtur

« We made out like bandits » shloud be « We made IT out like bandits », isn’t it ?

James

"The Tier 15 winced and said, “I’d manage so."" This doesn't quite follow, I think. Maybe change manage to imagine? That's my best guess as to what was intended.

Escalatus

I think it was more in the spirit of "I'm going to have a breakdown, I don't want you to see me crying and am taking Aster with me because I need to hug someone"

RottenTangerine

Not sure if I'm the biggest fan of Liz's reaction of "you're not taking your near death experience well so Aster and I are going to leave you". Good chapter though!

Daniel Smith

I agree with Matt, he didn't die and wasn't permanently crippled. Even if he was hysterics don't help anything, learn from the mistakes and move on.

King Lokajad

Really enjoy how he rationalized his actions so it didn't come across as a spur of the moment decision. Someone who has gone through what he did would easily brush off an injury like that after all it's not like he's crippled or worse dead. But it figures Liz reacted that way after all as a noble it's unlikely she's ever experienced the death of a loved one her parents seem very helicoptery so its unlikely any of her siblings have perished. Much preferred Matt in this chapter feels more like how he was earlier on in the story.

The Tallest Tree

An excellent chapter full of emotional development for Matt. I hope that it results in an actual conversation with Liz where he explains WHY he feels/reacted that way as well as Liz having to justify HER reaction because she and the fox bear a lot of responsibility for heaping it all on Matt

Arkeus

It is very nice to see consequences of the close death.

Simon

Huh, there's a thought. Concept phrase of I am Endless combined with an Image of overcoming Death in endless encounters. Could lead to so many ways of narrowing things down for his Intent and even further for his Aspect

Starfall20

Um... Am interesting though is that when death is mentioned as a character, one of the was is death of the endless.

PlasmaticPi

Surprised the image of him looking into the eyes of death as he tried not to die didn't become the image for his Concept. I mean death is the ultimate end, which something endless must overcome.

C_Mantis

wouldn't have been able to get the good stuff until they were off planet. unless the guild brought them (they didn't)

Daniel Smith

True having the Rings allowed him to switch places with her, but if instead he had traded the Rings he would have more skills. Meaning he probably would have been put in that situation to begin with.

Garend

Matt's good the way he is. He trusts them fine. But when you dedicate your life to hundreds of years of brutal combat, you better damn well be ready to brush off the injuries. Ye,s he got hurt- so that's a learning experience. Same for Liz and Aster, it's the first time someone close to them got seriously hurt, so they need to learn how to deal with it. Emotions are hightened, but telling the person who was injured he's dealing with it wrong is also wrong. People deal with trauma in many different ways- there's no right or correct way, only ways that are helpful to specific people and ways that arn't,

william wallace

excellent chapter. Matt is really gonna need some therapy to learn how to deal with emotions and learn to trust people. really liked Liz in this chapter. very pulled together as long as there was something to do then fall apart, feels very natural.

PrimordialJay

Thanks for the chapter! Near the end of the chapter is days "training [Filter]" instead of trading

Lictor Magnus

Thanks for the chapter. I wonder if he'll be more open to the idea of therapy now.
