Stylemys

After sleeping on it, I realized that this ins't the first time that expected Kingdom reinforcements refused to help and left everyone to die. The entire golem war only escalated because rival factions blocked help. The goal then was to indirectly assassinate the Prince via inaction. This time similar inaction conveniently led to the death of an ace squad that supports and answers to the Prince's righthand man.

Stylemys

That's the Queendom's job. The Princess just likes a lot of foreplay.

Stylemys

Knowing their luck, it will be another noble from a rival faction that the Prince can't openly touch. Unlike with the golem war, neither Team Bucket nor the Prince will be able to secretly act against them due to the army watching.

Stylemys

It would have to be super extra shitty plan by by the Prince. Team Bucket answers to Juni who the Prince's right hand man. Juni's ace squad being taken out of the mix for weeks just weakens the Prince's ability to take political credit for war contributions. Strategically, I think it would make more sense for this to be a plan by a rival faction to discredit Juni and undermine the Prince's position.

Tjark

I never liked the fact they joined the Kingdom. And after seeing the princess I even thought they should have joined the Queendom. I hope they'll take this as reason to join the Queendom. Pretty sure they'd even pay for their team's switching costs after what they did to their troops.

Tjark

True although the main thing they want to teach is human vs human since Pathers are full-time delvers whereas the path actually exists so the empire has powerhouses against the other great Powers. And I'd assume fighting humans is way different than rift monsters. Also while bad commanders are for sure less common in the empire army there must always be some idiots.

Stylemys

Plus they’d probably get way more contribution points for “capturing” the freshly Queendom fort as opposed to simply reinforcing their own fort. With only their own team no less since the previous team died before they started retaking the fort.

Stylemys

Why wouldn’t normal troops be able to re-enter? They have access to Contribution Points and the War Market too. As long as they have at least 1 point they should be able to “revive”.

JoBo12

I really hope that we get some insight into the grand strategy of either side during the healing downtime. Since both sides are aiming to win the war at nearly any cost since the auction I fail to see why there is even a big importance placed upon the fort skirmishes. As far as I understand the only way to win the war is to push the enemy entirely off the planet which would imply taking their interplanetary teleportation link. With the abundance of teleport technology as seen during Team Bucket deployment as well as in the training planet arc I wonder why they don't concentrate their forces and teleport an entire army next to the enemy main city in an attempt to end the war quickly. This plan should be especially tempting to the Kingdom as they are already entrenched on the planet and would have had the time to set up teleportation infrastructure. Also, if pathers are able to reenter the war but normal troops aren't I don't understand why they are not thrown into areas were high firepower is needed and large number of casualties are to be expected (for example an assault upon a major city). This would minimize manpower drain and utilize their strongest fighters. Either side could give their pathers 1 point repeatedly to keep them in the fight at any cost and motivate them by promising wealth if their side wins the entire war. Just promise them at least one tier 20 mana stone each if their side wins should be enough. Even assuming millions of pathers the cost would not exceed a tier 30 mana stone (a small price considering the rewards for the winning side). Such wealth should be absolutely enormous for any pather and offset a potential lower point total (similarly you could structure a sign up bonus). Or are such tactics forbidden through path limitations? Can only points be given to pathers as rewards? The exploration of strategy could also be used to emphasize Mat's growing qualities as a leader, a role he seems to fill more and more. This could even lead to other teams (maybe some tier 6 teams) being assigned under Bucket's command allowing for more interesting bettlefield tactics in future battles. Maybe they will even be assigned permanently to one theater of war allowing us to gain a greater insight into one battlefield. Anyway I am exited to see where this is going. Good chapter!

Jonas

Thanks for the great chapter

Crushing Despair

Well, if the kingdom does not, I can see the queendom offering our party a deal to reimburse and to switch sides.

Hazza Vanderbyl

f(n) = n-1 + f(n-1)

Termac

I still don't understand what the series is that Emily's talent follows. Because it sounds like it's *supposed* to be triangular numbers, but that would be 1, 3, 6, 10, 15…

Jason H.

Would definitely be interesting to get a snippet of a chapter from the referee perspective

Forestfire

The allie that arrives too late to help but just in time to secure victory is as old as time. From a political standpoint they would be lauded by the prince publicly and untouchable.

Forestfire

Team bucket (almost wrote biscuit there) pushed past their objective unsupported. The failure of reinforcements is their fault as much as anyone's. That being said no one is commenting on the referee's doing wind sprints to keep up with the casualties.

Stylemys

Alternatively it could be someone who wants the Queendom to take the fort so that they can officially "capture" it back. Taking forts is likely worth way more points than simply reinforcing them. Why not first let the Pathers die thinning out the Queendom fighters and then reap greater rewards when you immediately "re-capture" the heavily damaged fort?

Obran

Who knows, there might be a heroic death bonus that makes up for losing all your points. I mean dying a Tier 5 or mediocre Tier 6 would only need to sacrifice a few dozen or even a hundred or so points to revive if they give away all their points. A strong Tier 6 or Tier 7 would have thousands, but would presumably be harder to take down. KInd of like separating the wheat from the chaff. If a Tier 7 only has a couple dozen points it means they suck. If a Tier 5 or Tier 6 has thousands then they are worth reviving and giving a bonus to keep happy.

Stylemys

A random kingdom citizen will be easier to scapegoat. Personally I doubt there ever was help coming. They went there to tie up enemy forces and the "reinforcements" made sure they stuck around to do that. Making sure your most powerful fighters die routinely also keeps them from ever saving up enough to warrant cashing out when they die. You want the potential rewards of coming back to always exceed the value of points lost points while also keeping them from dying with the 20K needed to switch sides. Best case scenario, they preemptively start buying cheaper stuff and keep their own savings low. Meanwhile, influential Kingdom/Queendom citizens will be the ones gradually and safely saving up points for the best items in the Market.

Ernie 3

What makes this even better is if I was mat and team I would directly go to the prince and threaten to switch sides if we don't get our points back AND A LARGE COMPENSATION. I mean think about it they took a fort and almost fought off two 100 man sqauds by themselves. Alls it would take is a walk across the street to the Queendom base to ask them if they will pay the 25K price for each member of there team to switch. Garented the Queendom would pay it in a heartbeat. Not only would it severely weaken the kingdom it would also add another powerhouse team to there roster. 25K to the Queendom is nothing we know this from what we saw at the auction house and a small price to pay for recruiting a team of monsters.

Stylemys

I assume the Empire's army has a plan to keep "don't trust your commanders or allies" from being the big lesson that most Pathers learn from this war. This whole introductory war creates a situation where they're treated like disposable mercenaries under an amateur command structure and that's what they're going to learn to fight like.

Ernie 3

That is what I was expecting them to do The majority of the points come from taking a fort NOT holding it. The second the kingdom didn't have a team ready I would have dipped and headed towards the next fort to conquer. Doing that both forces the kingdom to get there act together and makes them look horribly bad for giving uncontested points to the enemy. I mean think about it if the kingdom losses the war and doesn't get more points than the Queendom. Then this whole thing just becomes a massive waste of resources. Mat and team are trying to win the war instead of focusing on points and that's just not smart.

Obran

Might not be a "coward." The troop leader could be a double agent. Someone on the Queendom side only pretending to be on the Kingdom side to sabotage for strategic advantage. Sacrificing a spy for such a minor victory seems kind of a waste. As for sacrificing Matt's team by pretending there are reinforcements coming when they really weren't. Could be. Though Matt's team is fairly strong, so sacrificing them would have had to be worthwhile. The question would have to be, where did the attacking army come from? And by moving them to attack Matt's force, did lower the defence on an even more important enemy strategic position.

TerrestrialOverlord

They need to make disparaging comments about the kingdom hierarchy where the leadership can hear about only using connections to select cowards for leadership positions...use a little bit of shaming to get whomever stood them up in trouble with everyone... and if there was no one....act like good and proper uncontrollable mercs....act under presumption they have no support and just fuck shit up everywhere they deem safe enough..afterall resurrections aren't free..

C_Mantis

Treating them like mercs is how im writing them to be honestly. its the closest historical slot the pathers would fill.

Stylemys

My bet is that there never were any reinforcements coming. The original mission was to be a distraction and that never changed. When the team took the fort, the Kingdom only claimed reinforcements were coming to keep them there tying up even more Queendom troops. The timer wasn't a countdown until help arrived; it was counting down until it was too late to retreat and they'd HAVE to defend it to the death. From a numbers perspective, this was objectively a massive win for the Kingdom. They gave up one team of Tier 6 "mercenaries" to kill a far more enemies, seriously damage an enemy fort, and drew a small army with heavy artillery away from the actual targets. Team Bucket lost all their points, but the Kingdom itself lost NOTHING. They'll scapegoat what happened and then just keep doing stuff like this. They only need to string along their sacrificial Pather troops for a year until the war ends anyway.

Brad

That is a lot of points. Wasn't it like 25k to switch sides?

Termac

Ooh! Good catch.

Sanairb

I'm thinking it was Luna who interfered with thier reinforcements to stress the team out more.

Pyrefiend

The kingdom should reimburse them for points lost after they come back

Brad

Man you left us there ugh!!!! This feels like another of the princes shitty plans.

Miguel Canarte

I need more. thanks

Starfall20

Yep and they are going to do an after action report to see what they did wrong, and what new equiptment they need to add to their stocks.

Luciaron

Was it a kingdom person or was it a pather? Doubt a pather would be a coward but people could be focussing too much on points if they're near a purchase

Clay Smith

They better describe in great detail the coward getting his ass kicked.

Amelgar

What gave you the impression it was over?

sqeesqad

I had totally expected this war arc to go on at least twice as long than it did

SunderGoldmane

Oh so you gave her the power of Fibonacci retracement. Lucky girl.

Amelgar

Hm... the reinforcements could have gone turncoat as well

Rhaid

Man...Fuck the kingdom.

Bobtur

Thanks for the chapter !
