Loving this so much!

I think the criticisms were wrong but framed in a constructive manner, the original comment was bringing up his perceived faults with a story he loves so much he spends money on it even though its free. When we all read a webnovel that's long and has been continually posting for years, we generally strongly remember specific points or situations in a story that bring out positive or negative emotions and forget the other minutia, the fix or answer to a situation could have been already stated or resolved and we just missed it or don't remember it. I read a lot of webnovels and the non-constructive comments are usually just insulting the author directly or the story as a whole. Comments on pateron are inherently a good thing in my opinion because not only are we paying for a story that's free we also give enough of a shit to comment on it.

Was hoping that Aster would have gone with something more like a Falcata or Harpe over a Cutlass.

I won't be as nice as the author and just state you're whining about a sci-fi universe and its reasoning not living up to your supposed ideal of what that universe should look like...as a reader. I get picking apart plot loopholes and poorly thought out storytelling. I do not get raging against a well integrated sidepiece to the main story.

Great Idea, do you usually come up with things in such a way, or do you have some other Tipps for a fellow storyteller?

I feel you about the patreon comments. if you want you should join the discord and im happy to hash it out there. These conversations are good for me as they force me to refine my worldbuilding if something isnt up to snuff. I like when people put pressure on the worldbuilding. Its frankly my favorite part of writing this story. But yeah these comments keep me honest so keep em coming. After all if something is wrong I need to fix it and if something isnt clear I also need to fix it.

Wow, thanks for replying to my grump! I really do love the novel, I wouldn't bother to spend so much money and time on it otherwise :) Thank you for sharing it. I have more thoughts about the rest, but will have to respond later. I accidentally used the wrong [Enter] once already and don't want to fight Patreon's commenting right now.

There seems to be some confusion here. Bonds mature either through age or Tier. Which ever speeds them up. Aster acts childish because beyond Minkalla she never really needed to grow up. If you note in the latter half of Minkalla she was far more serious. This is meant to finalize that yes but a lot of people regress a touch in college because they are having fun with newfound freedom and limited restrictions. There are a lot of cringe moments in college we like to forget but they still happen but most of us grow out of them by our second year. Bring that 4 year university to 10 that's about year 5 or so. For the rest we are hear because its a cute little side story that I'm trying to keep a little lighter than the main story which is hitting some darker plot points. I disagree about the worldbuilding part. Was the bond school introduced to stop the comments? Yes I admit that freely but I think its been well integrated and makes sense. Its meant to give bonds the time away to see with relative clarity if their bonds are abusive. Time away is the best cure for that. Look at domestic abuse IRL. If they can go back they generally do and time away is the best way to prevent that. That is what I'm basing the academy off of, throwing pulling them away might as well be used to set them up properly but thats more a side effect of finding the easiest thing to do with bonds when you need to stash them for a decade.

Nick Pincus

Eh in some ways I think that's the point of the academy. She make be over 40 but 99% of that time she has been a little sister stuck with her brother all of the time. She has had no independence forced on her and been given little opportunity to explore that independents. She is basically like 14 right now in about half her mentally and a hardened killer with the other half. She is mature but not an independent person yet.

> Besides, Aster had already noted that they had little to teach her after decades of Luna’s tutelage. This sentence perfectly sums up the problem I have with so much of this. Saying that “bonds are maturity capped by tier” doesn’t solve the problem- it’s brute force handwavium. I can’t tell you it’s wrong, it’s the author’s world. I can say it’s unsatisfying and appears ill-conceived. Is Aster somehow a child, non compos mentis? Why is this the case? Is it because she’s tier-capped? The Academy will not help. Is it due to a lack of life experience? The Academy will not help. What are we doing here, again? Are we here because ten years at the Academy will magically give all the bonds the essential life experiences they need to be mature and to evaluate their relationships? It doesn’t matter how many years they’ve spent outside of the Academy, ten years is the right amount of time to cure it all? I expect that the transformations we’ll see through this arc will simply not make any sense. Or are we here because this course of action was hastily committed to as an overcorrection to a now non canonical version of human/bond relationships, hundreds of chapters ago? That’s what it feels like to me. This is what happens when the go to deus ex machina for painting yourself into plot corners is the benevolent intercession of an all powerful tyrannical nanny state. We have a patchwork of brute government fiat instead of well realized world building. I still love the book but stuff like this drives me crazy.

Tommy

I mean grow up as in fully psychologically develop. I think we are talking cross purposes here, it’s entirely possible for her to develop fully and then act like a child after (like Mara) which would be a choice. but at the moment she’s like a kid stuck in an adult body - or at least the way the writing is in the chapters (the narrative tone I guess?) strikes me as being quite childlike. And this is a character that has already fought her way through Minkalla slaying countless enemies. Maybe I’m completely wrong and she’s an adult behaving in a childlike way. But it doesn’t seem like that from the tone. Which as I say, sits kinda weird for all the killing she’s done.

C_Mantis

Also roughly the size of Pennsylvania which is what I based it off of lol. The city is Delaware. Really I just looked at a map and went, "These two are vastly different. Perfect."

Azulmar

Because Mara is the poster child of acting like a grown up 😝

Pararably

Fun fact 50000 square miles is the size of Alabama. lol

Vega

Does she really have a need to grow up? In those 40 years she became an immortal. She could lead a decently profligate life by delving a tier 17 rift occasionally (or just two tiers up), which is fairly easy to her. She isn’t harming anyone by being like she is. To be honest the only real reason she has to grow up is that she wants to take over from Mara one day.

Tommy

I’m looking forward to Aster finally growing up. Her being alive for 40 years or so and still having an adolescent psychological profile is odd

Tommy

This is what I don’t get. Why has it taken this long? She’s gotta be 40-50 years old by now. Does being a bond delay the psychological development? Edit: ahh just saw someone elses comment. Ok so being a bond does impact it

Thomas Brusilovsky

Im still really, really looking forward to a delving scene from Aster’s perspective. It would be so funny!

So is aster going to upgrade her bloodline again soon? Also what about lizs bloodline

Anime Problem

Remember being too involved in the bond between her and Matt severely hinders her development as a person that's why the school exists she literally hasn't had to develop without Matt being around before now

Moonspike

She has been conscious for more than 30 years at this point, she should have been an adult a long time ago.

Chris Fey

Not to mention Land and Sea.

Chris Fey

I'm liking the tone of these. I guess one tricky bit is by the end of her academy time Aster should read as a full adult, rather than a tag-along little sister/pet.

Summercat

Cammy is oblivious to Aster's rivalry isn't she

Summercat

Hehehehehehehehehehehehehe

John Looney

The winter fox (ice and wind) made rivals with the magma otter (fire and earth) cute foiling
