Armor Talk
🕑 Added 2023-11-06 21:53:41 +0000 UTCthis armor was the inspiration for Matt's new armor. If this isn't coming across as clear I'll massage things so things feel less iron man. It can be hard to describe stuff like that. The gems were brought up in the discord so they will go but if anything else needs to change let me know.

Personally not a huge fan of the Mad Martigan sword-gauntlet, but otherwise that armor looks awesome!
Walter
Any chance we could get a version with Matt's phantom armour (as the crystal or ethereal version) displaying over the top of this? I think that'd be cool to see!
Sean Jennings
They would actually fit really well in this world because as far as I know they are the only Power Armor in fantasy series that are powered by magic. A combo of Ranger and Storm would be amazing for Matt.
Lucas
Reminds me of anthem, I think this adds to his character in interesting ways hopeful he can make it a growth item at some point
Lucas
Same!
Lucas
Love it!

Honestly, this image looks more like powered armor than power armor.
James Faulkner
Eh, the power core in the chest is concealed from the outside right? I think their main complaint is the cannon, but then again if you specify that it’s useful for flying even in antimagic fields (instead of being redundant) it’s better
badw0lf
I think that there needs to be just a bit more clarification based on what was written. It comes across almost like a gundam, where based on this drawing, most of the "power" of powered armor is coming from spells and enchantments and not the mechanics of it. If anything, maybe a new designation for the armor as Enchanted Power armor or something less cringy could get the point across and not have people like me automatically think Gundam or Iron Man for a "powered" armor. Overall, it didn't bother me at all and still read very good, just wanted to put in my two cents on this if you are looking for constructive ideas.
Arataumaihi
Do the power suit mate. Too many people here appear to think they can dictate your creative content.
Sean Jennings
I'm kind of imagining the Javelins from Anthem.
Anime Problem
People are acting like the power armor is gonna take away from Matt when the whole point is that it's a multiplier to him and he needs more things to push his mana to otherwise it's just going to waste
Kelly Bryan
A couple other points in the armors favor : misdirection of his mana generation, added efficiency to his attacks through the armor and redundancy that adds power when used together He limits the mana throughput but the armor reinforces his efficiency, also concept flight + skill flight + suit flight is faster top speed and resistance to any single flight restriction method. The description smacked of reinforcing Matt, intense heavy protection that doesnt impede his current style and capabilities. Also, Im looking forward to a scene where the enemy blows trump card after trump card to disable his armor and then our Unstoppable Force comes out of the wreckage really ticked off to lose his toy.

Power armor will always be reminiscent of either Iron Man or Gundam's. Comes with the territory. I would suggest removing the chest core though, that DEFINITELY screams iron man.
alex bozdog
As I understand it, Matt's Armor is closer to a very tight exoskeleton (think Savitar in Flash Season 3 you can do a quick google) and Paladin Armor is closer to Iron Man's Gimmics Jarvis Included
Corwin
Honestly I would suggest having the gems inside the armor vs the outside. Giving the appearance that the Empire is trying to hide how much mana the armor requires. The shield definitely requires the ability to shrink and become part of his armor. Honestly I would ditch one large shoulder cannon in favor of two so it's less likely to be thought of War Machine from Iron Man
Tsorov
I agree with the point that the powerarmor shouldn't become Matts primary power. But as i understand it, it's more of a general upgrade to his already existing abilities and a failsafe for when his enemys try to kill his mana generation. The big difference between the normal armor and the powerarmor is, that the powerarmor is able to keep him going even in difficult situations, while normal armor would just make him stronger. The powerarmor should just become another tool, and not the definition of matt
Tsorov
Why not just get a cannon? Crossbows imply a long reload time
Retroburn
The jetpack was described only as providing incredibly powerful thrust, but I don't think that makes it particularly maneuverable. I imagine the jetpack mostly being used for fast transportation and possibly escaping anti-flight formations through sheer power. Not so much for combat.
Skyra
I agree with everything you said with addition that shield has to be collapsible with some space shenanigans so most of the time his left hand is free. Only time he should need shield is if he has to take a hit from tier 25 starship main canon or something similar.
Aclys
Honestly, over the shoulder, self-aimed guns seem a better idea than a chest mounted blaster because they can aim without having to turn the entire torso. As for skills vs crafted weapons... well, his infinite fuel supply is a massive advantage... would be a shame to not provide his armor with ways to leverage that energy for him in ways that pure skill shards cant or wont do as efficiently.... Plus the armor could potentially be operated semi-independently by way of the AI and thus mean its not Matt in armor fighting, its armor and Matt fighting together as one. Also last I checked iron man flies by using thrusters in his boots and hands... jetpack not so much. That said having a flight skill seems like a massive advantage not just for mobility... But also leverage, normally Matt would use his concept to give him leverage to make strikes he couldnt normally do while in mid-air, but with a flight spell he can get the same effect using mana instead which is a non-cost for him. So maybe get a cracked flight skill that isnt as fast but is top shelf on manuverability and reinforcing/supporting his movements, and use a built in jet pack device for when he has to go Fast over distances?
M van Dongen
Yep can't work.
Awesome design. I'm also reading Fire and Song atm, and it reminds me of Reidons armor.
Mario Morales
Reminds me of some of the Warlock armor from Destiny.
Bob Bryan
That just gave me an idea that if Matt incorpates crossbows into his suit, like the one from the ruin, he can use illusion magic to fire real and illusion ones that the enemy would not suspect
DasGoat622
He has in the past most notably against the constructs in the ruin on the planet with the vassal war. He hasn’t really need to, but who would turn down an adjustable shield
DasGoat622
If you’re counting votes mine would be against power armor. Matt is the power armor. Going this route seems like he just wasted the Tier 38 upgrade orb on CPA. It’s cool and all. But honestly who wouldn’t go for power armor when his choices were option one regular boring armor. Option 2 Armor Tank Spaceship coolest thing ever invented power armor. We have t seen the real Matt since before the Vassal War. It’d be nice to see Matt get back to that. Maybe find a way to make the Armor complement CPA and enhance the new feature from the upgrade and his Tier 25 talent. The photo looks amazing., and in terms of the shield maybe make it adjustable and use that feature about the Stygian gossamer extending to constructs outside his body apply to that.
Erik Halberg
Not traditionally. Longswords are usually mixed grip weapons where you're using two hands most of the time. Liz has always been the spear and shield/hoplite style fighter, but Matt certainly knows how to use a shield thanks to Luna. The more important bit is that his left gauntlet will be able to Stygian Gossamer whatever he's holding, so it sounds like anything can be his shield
Bob Bryan
Does Matt use a shield? I don't think he does but one that he could shrink and make bigger on command would be cool. Also a red blade, just the blade not the whole sword, would also look kind of cool. I like it
Fake Name
Getting black knight of the empire vibes. Could go with the red and white knights.
1FantasyFanatic
I have no problem with the chest core. It was the only thing that reminded me of Ironman and a black hole chest core is cool. Plus Ironman is cool so I don’t really see a problem even if the armors were similar which I don’t think they are.
Kelly Bryan
My impression is that Paladins are more tech and this construction is more magical and that your assumption about the repair function accurate.
Mario Morales
Didn't he want revenge or something on that moon cracking lady? The one that was working to cause the rift breaks that he helped deal with.
Kelly Bryan
Kicking off the war with an adversary initiating a larger version of his childhood trauma as a diversion isnt a reason? It has been some time sure but Matt has been committed to helping the Empire since Tier 5 when they told him they expect this from Ascenders. Dukes arent regularly a part of the Military and we have four in this squad. Also, I completely agree with the magitech. The Mattery was made for this and anyone who thinks his sword play is wasted in the armor hasnt seen enough anime.
SodaBoBomb
Yes..because the sword is held in the hand, not replacing the hand. But in the IMAGE it's replacing the hand.
Evernap
I genuinely did not even think of IronMan (other than maybe the chest core). Defense and utility are always the point of armor when dealing with enchantments. Matts mana lets the suit push the boundaries. Especially bc after a certain point more physical strength matters less bc of flight/gravity manipulation.
Jamarr
You can readded some of the functionality of the Ironman-esque gems but adding thrusters scattered around his torso and a casting focus in his helmet. The hand/feet thrusters were never practical but having some places in the torso near the shoulders and hips make sense since they're near your center of gravity. As far as spell focuses go, his main one should probably be in a staff or sword but having a backup in the armor seems fine. Omw situated near the mouth is somewhat cliche but I recall Matt have fun learned to cast spells from there to emulate dragon's breath.
Rui Lourenço
100% agree. The gun over the shoulder just seems limiting. Sure, he can still fire mana beam from anywhere, but he'll be doing it from there 99% of the time and to me that's just less cool than firing it from nowhere cause it's fucking magic. If anything, give him a sword that lets him project his spells as slashes. Flight with jet packs also just feels useless and, honestly, way less interesting than Domain flight and teleportation. And with all the utility Matt can already get just from Skills from being fucking Matt, I truly don't see the point of going the Power Armor route. 20x is better than 15x. And the boost to spells on his gauntlets could 100% exist in non-power armor. The only thing it being power armor does is the autonomous bullshit and the cannon? Honestly unsure how regular armor wouldn't be better. It could even look the exact same going from the concept art. Nothing about it screams power armor.
Evernap
The entire point of the path is to create Ascenders ie top tier fighters better than anyone else at their tier. They then get used in wars as elite fighters. That is why so many resources are poured into them. Why discounts ,laws etc. cater to them.
Evernap
Thing is with Matts armor he keeps 100% flexibility. So wrist movement is in no way impacted.
Daniel is ŁØNE
That aside the armor concept looks sick, and I'm glad it is sleek, I hate robust designs because of how limiting they look
Daniel is ŁØNE
The shoulder cannon and gems are what makes it similar to Iron Man. There is also the fact that most people don't want the Armor to overshadow what Matt himself is capable of, it should not be something that forces a change in fighting style and instead augments what is there to be more efficient, basically, the Armor should make Matt more Matt instead of changing up his fighting style significantly when its equipped. Assuming Matt could make it himself or it's a growth item that would essentially follow him forever it would be fine but something that is gonna have to be changed per rank being so significant to his future style seems like a bad idea.
Daniel is ŁØNE
He can fly already. he has multiple skills that enable easy flight, the whole jet on the armor thing is massively redundant. tbh, I kinda would prefer if the armor couldn't do anything Matt can't do with his base body, it should just be an all-round enhancement instead of something that changes his base fighting style significantly due to all the gimmick features. More like a second-skin-type deal, doesn't even have to be solid armor could be like a venom-type bio suit that makes Matt more Matt.
Beardo
I never imagined Matt going magitech armor. Wouldn't he rub into the same problems as the Paladin teams pre-growth bonding where they operate with a dedicated support team for repairs and such? I was thinking something something self repair enchant that Matt could dump mana and raw materials at and it would regrow itself - but obviously wouldn't be magitech fancy, more like a second skin - a non freaky Venom. Just my $0.02 love the story
Swordofmytriumph
I agree about the mana gem in the chest and the gun over the shoulder. Those are the most obvious, I’d ditch those if possible, or at least ditch the mana gem in the chest. The gun over the shoulder feels kinda gimmicky and feels like it’s limiting him rather than making him move powerful. Also having him fly on jet packs IS very Ironman… but it’s also pretty cool. My concern is that couldn’t he just get the flight skill? With his mana generation it wouldn’t even register and also would give him more maneuverability which he will need as a tank. What I loved was the black and gold color and the utility enchantments.
Rui Lourenço
I was definitely imagining it more on the lines of a full clunky power armor like the ones in Fallout and was quite disappointed. I never enjoy too much when equipment is more important than the intrinsic magic. Like, fighting in power armour to me seems different than fighting without one. Like melee vs driving a tank.
Jake Kimmerly
The only reason Matt needs is "I can help so I should" that's been pretty consistent
Matt
The black with the gold inscription was excellent, but the mana gem in the chest was just pure ironman. And the Gatling gun over the shoulder is just like the other guy in iron man. There are definitely ways on making it magic mech armour without it being quite so iron man. Maybe try and include a picture first too?
SwiftFate
The Empire is by far and above one of the more technological factions, so a MagiTech suit of armor just makes sense, especially with Matt's power generation. We don't need to go full Iron Man, nor does it have to do anything more than boost his existing skills, but when taking into account the raw MPS he has to power something like that...That is a necessity. There is no reason not to do it.
ShadowOfHavoc
I agree 100%.
Caelum
I think something like magitech power armor makes sense for Matt, especially when there are so many options that allow him to constantly channel mana into it. It will make him a more efficient war machine. Speaking of war though. As excited as I am to see MLA fight in a war, I still think there needs to be a personal reason for them to be involved. There needs to be a new call to action now that they finished the path and I hope that's already in the works.
Phil
My main concern with power armor is that it might overshadow Matt. When you start talking about all the abilities of the armor, and things it can do. hud, shield, laser cannon. I'm worried about what that entails for Matt's progression as a fighter. People say why not complain when power armor and stuff got brought up before. Well that's because the power armor was what those characters were. Matt is matt, not the battery to a cool suit of armor.
Chioke Nelson
That's badass
SodaBoBomb
I like it! I would just make sure to keep the sword as seperate from the arm, not a sword-arm, since you lose all wrist movement when your arm is your sword. It's fine to keep the thing about the glove essentially merging with the handle, since that prevents disarming but keeps wrist movement.
1FantasyFanatic
Damn that looks bad ass!
Tavis
Maybe have the gems as a line up the spine instead?
Dominic Pernicone
I was getting a mix of Black Templar and Iron Juggernaut vibes from it, especially with the description of the mana cannon and the gems. The "power armor" designation itself makes me think of bulkier exoskeleton-like armor, i.e., T-51b from Fallout, Space Marines from 40k, or Jorge's MJOLNIR suit from Halo Reach.
Silver Beard
Looks good but lose the fuzzy bits- cosmetics have no value in a piece designed for total war.
dakota downey
Pretty sure they are already in as high of a rift as they are allowed at t35
Alex
And here I was thinking 40K
William Johnson
Honestly that's about how I pictured it. I think dropping the gems is a good idea, projectors in the palms and chest and a lot of people are going to picture Iron Man no matter how you describe the rest of it.
John Balman
Imaginating this with Blue mana lines and the glow of mana wisping off the armor like misty smoke.....
Aaron Greene
Love Dr. Fid! Great trilogy there.
Robert Cummins
I’m so relieved. When power armor was mentioned all I could envision was some sort of bulky mecha like an anime. I hated that cause it’s like how is he gonna maneuver
adam1
I agree that I was expecting something bulkier, I think the cape actually detracts from a "power armor" look. To be honest, except for the angularity around the legs, it looks more like a heavy plate armor.
Revan694
Nice, its always difficult to describe something accurately without a picture.
CottonMod
Looks incredible! Is Matt getting the cape, too?
mitchell kaiser
This armor looks awesome, I was expecting more of a look like the Thor unit from StarCraft 2. Glad it’s a lot more sleeker than that.
C_Mantis
Yeah that was why we were like "this is fire lets go for this vibe" but apparently we are hitting iron man too much
Xavier Joanblanq
I was expecting something much bulkier though, especially with the shoulder mounted gun. I guess spatial expansion in the pauldron/upper back?
ElJako98
Thats actually relatively close to what I had envisioned. I pictured it kind of like this crossed with Dr. Fid's armor, even though his glows red and not gold.
Aurora1325
birb armor
Alex
Well, his Armour will be plenty sparkly anyway cause phantom Armour, especially crystal phantom Armour manifests on top of all his other stuff
Deathburn
Could shadow teleport the crafters into a high tier rift and then have it be made in like a month since I think there was time dilation?
Xavier Joanblanq
Das cool as shit.
John Balman
Damn
Eduard Marciuc
That looks sick! Can't wait to see the havoc he's gonna wreak with that
James Faulkner
I remember seeing this on Reddit AGES ago, it looks so good!
