TFTC To add my two cents this is the kind of chapter that can get me to stop reading a series. I was alread disoriented from the 70 yr time jump and then the chapter starts with this is the cocky arrogance matt and team show that doesn't feel written in or reasonable after so long being careful. the team has almost always retreated when things got dicey in rifts and the like and have always been shown to take enemy elites seriously a giant new unknown ship seems exactly like something matt would be sus about and darrow would urge caution on But now theres a 70 year time jump, none of their progress during yhat time is really covered or matters, and they have different personalities with no foreshadowing. I usually like and appreciate the time jumps but this one was really jarring. I think it's ok for them to lose but that the things that happened to them leading to the overconfident attitude when the ambush happens feels out of character. I also agree with people saying they should know more about this team. the amount of resources needed for the mega ship across 3 powers would definitely be noticed by empire spies based on all of the previous espionage prowess that has been attributed to the great powers. I also agree about gan le's powers feeling a bit like a loophole to handle power creep. i really enjoyed his viewpoint but from everything said about him he doesnt have the offensive power of an elite and matt should be able to completely ignore his attacks without spending any attention. Also definitely feels like blocking millions of mana should be costing him willpower. Maybe a chapter where the enemy teams training is covered would help make the battle portion of this feel more earned for the enemy team.

Would we, the readers, find it plausible that Maya the Reality Bender was taken completely out of the conflict for a decades-long recovery by a team of four Empire “Elites” we had only seen mentioned in one chapter? Also, she doesn’t manage to kill ANY of the attacking Elites - they shut down every trick she has using one guy whose Talent is “No reality warping can happen near me” Yeah, that would an awesome chapter. Let’s do that.

It’s poor writing that you needed to invent out of whole cloth a never-before-seen character who simply… nullifies all the damage to his entire team, and is immortal. It’s a five-year-old in the playground saying “Nuh-huh, I have an everything-proof shield! And so does everyone on my side!!” This is what’s called a “Diabolus ex Machina”, which is the other side of the coin a Deus ex Machina - an out-of-context sudden element which simply negates and nullifies all effort, all progress. They fail, because the author says they fail. Everything else - the sniper’s very cold and logical course of action, Maven’s inexplicable powerup (this is narratively still good because it’s a source of mystery that is of great interest to the empire and is plot-relevant), all of that fits within the context of the story. But Gan Le isn’t even a loss of agency for the protagonists (ie, he doesn’t stop them acting), he is *imposed irrelevance* (you can act, but nothing you do matters). By *fiat*, by simple declaration that “this is so”.

They've been doing nothing but training to counter the ascenders for 70 years.

This is just word vomit to take up the preview space on this post cause I dont want anyone getting to read any of it. :P Mean :)

So the guy that got cracks on his arm from a regular elite can now take full on titan manna hits. I understand the need to make enemy's stronger but it seemed very weird how they were powered up

I'm fine with the outcome of the fight, and the fight itself but it DID feel kinda weird with the time skip immediately before hand. Also, while Dan Le is annoying, he's a one trick pony. The ones IM annoyed about are Maven STILL being around and apparently even stronger and that guy that no one notices. I hate that power.

I honestly do not understand why people think that just because Matt and Co became ascenders that they suddenly get a power boost to wipe out everyone else at their tier and below 10 times over... Queen failed to become an ascender and is technically only an elite, just because of this should Matt now be able to take her on and come out untouched? How is that logical? There are different levels of elites, yes there are countless numbers that don't finish the path but there's a big difference in skill depending on where they fall off. What I understood about ascenders is that it is effectively just an arbitrary cut off to reach a certain level based on someone who did it "first" and now everyone tries to reach or exceed that threshold. All it shows is that they have the skill to consistently punch above their weight Class and the potential to grow to tier 50 and become absolute menaces because by that point no one can match them at that tier except other ascenders and their equivalents.

Firstly, thanks for the chapter Mantis. I can't imagine what writing such a robust story must be like. I think most people are confused (?) because T0 seems to have become weirdly complacent, considering that they're ascenders and go through continuous training, etc, under some of the strongest masters/teachers, it does seem kinda strange. Another thing is maybe the effect of large time jumps not really hitting home. With how old the core people in the story are and how many years/decades certain improvements take, things kinda get lost and 70 years doesn't hit like 70 years of real time will...The other GPs had decades to prepare , but that was also decades the ascenders continued training and (hopefully) honing their skills. Another thing is that it wasn't clear how many the other GPs sent, so I wasn't really sure what their odds were (not sure if it was mentioned in a previous chapter) Finally it seems like the gap between ascenders and elites isn't as much as it's touted to be? I'm honestly fine with it, but I think it could have been made clearer. The build up didn't feel as cohesive, definitely don't change the chapter, but maybe having some more background (a few chapters before this) that really highlights who the other GPs are sending and how powerful they really are...or maybe you intended for this to be the thing that shows us they're not that strong? Or you intend to do that later? It's always been kinda clear that Waters is OP, but because he's also an ascender, it's easy to expect equivalently great things from MLA as well.
