Nicholas Grey

"At least, that was what the logical part of him said. The emotional side of Matt said he should keep throwing himself into fights, live up to his name and his Domain, and force the enemies to test their durability against his. Show them why he was an Ascender." This pretty much demonstrates that Matt and company are LESS than the other Ascenders. Would the guilt trip have been effective on Shadow? Duke Waters? On the Last Line? Lila Worldwalker? No, it wouldn't even have been *tried*. Because they ARE Ascenders, with the drive and commensurate pride and self-assurance that made them so. Matt had literally *just* demonstrated that difference by apologising in the first place, when none of the others would - Darrow immediately capitalised by doubling down and trying to destroy him emotionally. Maybe it's not just an unconscious or narrative nerfing of MAL compared to what Ascenders "should be" able to do - maybe they're simply not up to the Ascender standard.

Justice Kline

Minor edit: I could be wrong but think the word you were looking for was Flouting instead of flaunting when Matt says “I’m sorry for flaunting your orders so blatantly.” I could be wrong though.

Isley

good chappie

Kacoo

I really feel that the generals have no desire to win this war, only save what they can for the next. Maybe the different perspective and goals will lead to overlapping positive results. I don't think it's fair to can it based on how you think it might go, at least see the justification

Coorsbie

It will force the enemy to choose between opening up their entire supply lines to divination or let the ascenders run rampant behind their lines. They could lose every engagement and still win STRATEGICALLY because the rest of the Empire’s forces would be so much more effective.

Mario Morales

Because some of us love the story but hate the way the Harmony Accords was handled. We felt it damaged the integrity of an otherwise great story.

Robert Vick

kain, I don't understand why you are moaning so much. if you don't like the way the story is going stop reading. Or just be more patient and wait until is starts turning around.

MinE

Knowing him he is at the peak of T31 with at least 3 inspirations ready to get to T35 whenever he wants.

Ted Burgess

IMO, Matt going from primary battle behemoth to tactician is just what is needed to throw a wrench in the enemy’s divination; or “flipping the board.”

Ted Burgess

Tiny edit. …and hundreds of millions of Tier 15s, sure we could. In fact, it be downright easy..”  > “in fact, It’d be.” Or “it would be” if you prefer to avoid sketch contractions. xD

Andrew K

You seem to be overlooking the full implications of the Empire's overall strategic goals in this war. They have a strong expectation that another war with *much* higher stakes is coming, so their focus for this war isn't winning - it's trying to manufacture longer-term advantages relative to their opponents so that they're in a better position when things really count later, and are concerned that they could be looking at being even more outnumbered in that later war. There are a lot of factors they would need to consider in the big picture view, but a major piece of it is definitely that they need to be particularly selective about risk vs. reward with their particularly-hard-to-replace high-value assets (Team Zero and other high-tier elites), as they basically need to evaluate cost-benefit tradeoff of their own expected losses vs. damage inflicted as if they're already in the worst-case version of that future war (in terms of number of number of opponents). At the same time, international politics are in play since some great powers could still conceivably go either way in that later war, and the Empire has to play a really complicated perception management game to try to avoid the worst-case scenario of literally everyone ganging up against them (because they seem too strong *or* too weak). From that perspective, Team Zero being mostly on defense (and some relatively reasonable offensive wins sprinkled in) is probably pretty good for them in terms of avoiding looking too weak, but pulling off too many big offensive wins (or possibly as few as one sufficiently spectacular one) could actually end up being really dangerous in the long run by feeding into the "too strong" narrative, even if the Empire still loses the current war overall.

Violet

To be fair, those are very short-lived stars you're describing. I doubt any of these generals are billions of years old, and the average lifespan of main sequence stars is in the billions. That said, the impression I get is that Ascenders are a specific kind of insane that works for them and only them. They're basically that one in a trillion person who managed to get a perfect overlap between their crazy and their skillset such that it works for them. You wouldn't expect a command staff to optimally command them, because command staffs are supposed to be sane.

DanielJ

I think it goes back to what Luna said. Ascended regularly pull off impossible feats. It's entirely possible that a group of planners -ones accustomed ro directing normal armies-won't be looking at things the way an entire group of Ascenders would. Just the change in perspective for the planning could be a benefit. And especially now that they're not hiding Shadow's Talent, they can move and deploy in ways nobody else can. Impossible movement speeds plus Impossible levels of offensive power brought to bear may well accomplish things otherwise considered too risky.

Mecha Paladin

I mean, its outlined why pretty clearly by General Bell in terms of why they dont overcommit their Ascenders, because they see them as key assests for battles yet to happen.

Kain

Who is Matt’s “perfect counter”, or Aster, or Shadow? Gan lie isn’t a counter he’s just tanky and can spread it around he “counters” all of them as much as he counters any of them. Mavin isn’t a “counter” to Shadow as much as she’s just better than Shadow in a fight as far as we can tell. Aster is “countered” by… I don’t even know which one is supposed to fill that role. None of the elites on team zero had direct counters either. The closest things to actual “counters” are the multi element mage vs light and the cyborg with no blood vs Liz if all of them were actual counters I would be more forgiving but they aren’t. Fuck half of the harmony accords are just literally C-grade rune soldiers who do they “counter”? Anyways I was responding to the person above you who you agreed with. And they literally said “their equivalent from the other powers” which I read as “ascender equivalent” I want to be done litigating that fight but y’all keep bringing it up. If you’re fine with the way it went cool I think it hurt the world building but it’s all just opinions.

JoshCalmick

Of course they don't have ascender equivalents. But they do have quantity in addition to each member of the Harmony Accords being Elites in their own right. And they have years of preparation in addition to each member being a specific countermeasure to each ascender on team 0. In addition to the backing of 3 different great powers. The harmony accords is a dream team assembled to specifically counter team 0 and they only managed to kill Eric. It sucks, but personally, I think it makes sense. I'm not gonna harp on you if you believe otherwise. I just think it is consistent with the story that has been told so far. If being an ascender means to be straight up unbeatable, then there would be no story left to tell once they left the path. We've seen the power-tripping fantasy moments where MLA wipe out entire armies without breaking a sweat, now we are at the point in the story where we need actual conflict to keep things interesting. And I am still entertained. If you think you can do story arcs like this better than Mantis has handled theirs, then by all means go ahead and I look forward to reading your story's equivalent! (I sincerely hope this last paragraph does not come off as sarcastic. If you think you can write something better, I would be more than happy to add another series to my reading list)

Kain

I really do hate being this negative but honestly if this mission goes well I will lose literally all respect for the Empire and its leadership. The 500 year old ascender knows better than the immortal war generals and information analysts that have lived so long they have watched stars being borne burn bright and then die because… platitude … sigh

Kain

The Harmony Accords do not have any ascender equivalents. But I’m done arguing about this rewrite the story in your head as much as ya like.

AA

Nice chapter, shows the emotional side. I really hope in the next fight the fake nerfing of team zero will end...happy to give it one more chance

JoshCalmick

Exactly! The only complaint from that crowd that I do kind of agree with is how we don't really see the non-empire's expenditure of resources... yet. Sometimes people really just need to be patient. I am sure we are going to see the cost of Maven being so strong eventually. We are still in the early ish stages of the war.

Luciaron

Yeah I never really got the impression that ascenders had been nerfed. It’s not like they were losing to average people. They were losing to their own equivalent from the other side that had made specific preparations for them.

JoshCalmick

I'm very glad that this moment is finally here. I have been getting a bit tired of so many comments being negative and about how "Mantis nerfed ascenders." Like they were countered and got caught with their pants down. That's why team 0 had a death. I'm excited to see how things turn out now that the kid gloves are coming off. Looking forward to the board being flipped in the coming chapters.

Ryan Romano

Darrow does a good job, he's basically been tasked at herding cats with laser beam eyes, angry cats with laser beam eyes and lightsaber claws, so for someone who came up in the military, he's doing a good job with dealing with the ascenders

Tommy

I’d contest the stance that Matt is either behaving logically or emotionally. It infers that being emotional is detrimental, and logic is not. I’d look at it from a model of adult and child. When he reacts with his emotions, wanting to go and smash things up, he is letting his child side govern his response and be in charge of his emotions. ‘Little Matt’’s sense of safety has been rocked (loss of Eric). Grown-up Matt should take charge, reassure his child side that all will be well and he is safe, but that Grown-up Matt must be in charge of his emotions. He can still feel and use those feelings as fuel to power his responses, but not in a knee-jerk reactive way. Great chapter!

Bob Bryan

And. Darrow is thousands if not millions. Don't rate this based on normal mortals.

Havokk

Time to flip the board and do impossible Ascender things. Cant wait to LZ complain that nothing is going according to his plans anymore

Owen Kaz

I'd love to see a Matt and Allie hit and run sequence. She teleports with him to a random tier 25-27- battlefield, he drops a quick billion Mana in spells, and then they teleport to the next one. He can't bring them the number of tier 25's they need, but he can damn well makeup for them if he doesn't use his willpower and just overloads everything they have with sheer quantity of mana.

Tijay Arnie

Kids? Dude they're almost like 500

C_Mantis

Lol.

Derze

Let’s go

Amazon Shopper

good one, they would never agree to help with tactics. You almost got me there! Happy April fools! Now please put out the real chapter pretty please <3

MikeL

With the talk of DW protecting the Citadel, it made me think he is at T31, I wonder if he is holding back some Inspirations as a surprise for the right moment.

Axim

Was terrified I’d open this up and it would be a prank chapter

Poonam Desai

What's about to go down (I am hype): https://i.makeagif.com/media/4-14-2016/Z9GV1Q.gif

James Faulkner

Tftc!

Patrick Brennan

Matt going on a rampage - check ✔️

C_Mantis

Eh Darrow is also a cog in the machine. Hes a brigadier general who is ordered about at the whims of the Generals.

Bob of Doom

Yeah Darrow, shut it. Instead of granting the kids a break after the first time they lost a team member you shoved them back on the front lines and now are pissy they made an emotional response. Perhaps next time you give them an actual break instead of trying to score a dumb point. Otherwise you will die because you thought it would be better to try to break your toys instead of letting them recover when you you can't keep up.

Luna_1001

Yay

Captain the Red Beard

Thank you for the chapter! Happy Monday!
