Alex

they could possibly be held criminally responsible.  Theoretically possible. But I very much doubt anybody is gonna take an ascender to court for sth as minor as not being able to pay taxes.

Dereion Hardin

They can make more pathers

Drew Tunison

The Orders feel like the Empire is trying to make the best out of what they can without tipping off other nations about a true war coming in 6 thousand years. They cant make more pathers and any new extremely militant programs would be a big red flag, but old out dated Orders brought up by certain nobility will help divert eyes. While it sucks to think about indoctrination and potentially child soldiers, the empire knows for a fact that total war is coming and for those people and others to survive and thrive this is one of the options they must pursue.

King Nereus

Well, yeah everyone should be. That’s why I’m struggling with this a bit, but I suppose I imagined the worst possible scenario as an example of how bad this could turn out and why allow it, and my imagination may have strayed from the intent of the text, if you got all of that from what was written here, Sorry all to distract from the show. I know nothing is perfect, and I mostly love the world Mantis has built here overall. Thank you Mantis!

Alex

Given how incredibly pissed off Manny was at Virgil for what she did to the rune kids I cannot imagine that he'd allow the Orders to use dangerous experimental procedures with high failure rates, or that he'd allow the orders to turn failed kids into slaves.

Andromeda Adams

Well well let’s see the whole order thing plays out. Also I wonder how their first court goes! Tyftc!

King Nereus

We are saying then that there is a process by which these children are enhanced at birth with “some secret process”, and not all of them will end up with power that allows them to become a knight should they so choose, but the remaining children who underwent this process are still enhanced in some way, just not enough or in the right way that particular order is looking for? I was thinking more along the lines of things not working out could mean some horrible stuff happening to them physically or mentally, and/or being outcasts and abandoned, or enslaved to serve as caretakers for the strong or next generation.

Jesper Hansen

The dragon comparison worked a lot better Alex.. The path and the knighthood(as we currently know it) have no comparison whatsoever, if anything the path is the opposite.. Instead of indoctrination it creates individuality and creativy. I kinda agree with the thread starter tho, while I don't think it's all that bad, and I don't see it as the biggest evil of PoAs world.. I imagined Matt to be a lot more against it

C_Mantis

I will say there is an out for the kids in the order. It's obviously not perfect because of social conditioning and being raised with expectations but there is an ou for those who really don't want it. Also just to alleviate some worst fears not all kids who under go the process will even become knights because they just won't have the desired talent and such and they get to believe mostly normal noble lives in so much as anyone can in poa

Donan The Barbarian

Final size of the duchy will be double that of average, and it's also twice as big as any other duchy formed during this war, but due to the treaty about new worlds their duchy will be size locked for a few millennia at a size well below average, and this while the treaty is in place their duchy is already complete despite being below average.

Donan The Barbarian

While the orders as a whole didn't have a perfect record with said enhancements at birth, that's mostly because each individual order is aiming to produce a continuous chain of Pinnacle elites specialized in one thing. There's one order specializing in fire single target direct damage offensive mages, there's another order aiming for fire single target Damage over Time mages, another on Fire single target healing mages, etc. etc. there's just too many ways to try and specialize and even if you figure out a perfectly safe way of using one specific treasure to enhance an unawakened child there's going to be variance in Talents between all who underwent said procedure which means even if everyone who's ever undergone the procedure comes out alive with an enhanced Talent specialized in fire and/or DoT it's still very much an experimental procedure.

King Nereus

A recent chapter did also say that the unawakened are “property” too. I suppose I will just have to get over it, but I think your argument about the dragons isn’t the same thing. While I don’t recall the text you pulled that from it sounds like there is a culturally accepted widely used procedure with a known outcome. I guess someone had to be the first though. What they are talking about doing here is described as experimentation. How many failures will there be before something succeeds? I hope that you’re right and there is nothing but beneficial outcomes, but it doesn’t seem all that different than forcibly grafting some runes onto their bones.

Alex

I understand the misgivings towards giving magical enhancements to newborns, but I’d imagine said enhancements would be purely beneficial — the new Orders would probably have that as a legal requirement — and enhancing infants isn’t particularly strange in the Empire anyway. The Dragon Clans use a special potion and ritual on pregnant Dragons to ensure that newborn Dragons inherit the draconic Talents, because the fact is those Talents are significantly better than any Talent the child is likely to get otherwise. This all feels a bit like the genetically engineering designer babies debate; I know that’s controversial in our world, but it just isn’t in the Path world, immortals do that sort of stuff all the time.

King Nereus

But the last chapter says they are using natural treasures on infants at birth. With the path, the kids are around 16? 18? They are clearly able to make a more informed decision than an infant who can make no decisions. It looks like this chapter is talking about adding outs so that after the kids are effectively “enhanced” at birth, and grow up within the order they can one day say they don’t want to be there anymore, when that is all they know. I get that everyone in the empire doesn’t have a choice and must go through the awakening, but they are doing it to young adults (under Empire law at least). It feels so much worse to me, to force “experimental enhancements” on infants. I’m surprised that Tur’stal and Rusty are even on board with this.

Blake N.

As for how the path changes from aura potions, I would guess it slightly increases the number who make it on the path past tier 15, but not the number who makes it past like tier 17. The concept made with the potion is weaker than the real elites who form their own so I doubt those who used that to make a concept would get super far anyway

Blake N.

There territory is larger than the other ascenders’ from this batch, but those are smaller than usual because the treaty forcing the empire not to pick up any new worlds. Typically a duchy would be larger because it’s made of more newly found worlds rather than traded ones, but the war treaty basically gave the empire a set number of planets from the other nations, of which this duchy gets 2/5 while water, light, and shadow each get 1/5

Jack Dawson

Yeah, there's a bunch of skills that start at tier 14 with no known tier 8 equivalent and he's already proven that for some of them they do exist IE 'bandage' and that copper skin skill

Wheels42

It's fundamentally about opportunities and freedom of choice. The segments on the order highlight the protections and aspects of embedded choice well to show what Matt cares about.

MinE

What chapter are those guys in again?

Aaron Hardin

More likely the bandits were directed subtly to that ship to steal from them in some way, many bandits absolutely would steal from a ship in front of the, without knowing who it belongs to and undervalue the goods.

Aaron Hardin

The problem with that is if Titan’s Torch come up with something at a higher tier that is groundbreaking, that would also naturally be profitable to the extent it may be able to make the whole duchy go in the black by a lot on its own, and it would take a lot less subtle intervention to try and undermine the duchy. Given how there are already 2 successes, and that higher level crafters are already being drawn in, this is feasible and may be something that the counsel of senses tries to more directly intervene in before is comes to pass, which makes it more likely something gets found out.

Alex

The Path of Ascension is a government program whose purpose is to select exceptional combatants from the masses. The ultimate goal of the Path is to fast-track these individuals into the military so that they can fight and win in the political wars. The Path is also a form of indoctrination when you think about it; Pathers are always so much younger than everyone else at their Tier, which creates something of a social barrier between them and normal cultivators. This means Pathers have a tendency to interact predominantly or exclusively with other Pathers, because they have a greater sense of connection to those people. This has an echo chamber effect: because you need to have a combative mindset to advance on the Path, and because you're very likely to be surrounded by people with the same mindset as a result of being on the Path, Pathers will tend towards being extraordinarily combative, which makes them much more likely to join and support the military. I say all that to point out that the Orders and the Path aren't all that different in terms of being methods of indoctrinating children and turning them into weapons. MAL really aren't in a position to make objective judgements about things like the Orders because they're very much a product of the Path which is very much an analogue to the Orders. It would be extremely hypocritical for Matt to say the Orders are bad because they target children; at least children in the Orders will be given copious amounts of resources, support, and training instead of just being told "go out and have fun, try not to die" like what happens with kids on the Path.

King Nereus

I’m wondering how Matt can be so torn up about not accellerating integration on Sorellia quickly enough and a bunch of kids got “left behind” on the opportunity to become immortal,, but he and Liz are perfectly fine with ‘untested magical experimentation’ on and effectively indoctrinating if not enslaving children into this ancient Order. Seems like they wouldn’t be ok with that at all,

Flopmind

Good chapter! I love all the tidbits on Knight orders and kingdom building!! Thanks Mantis!

Flopmind

The guild is trying to manage that with bandage, but there's been no word of success so far. True healing skills don't start appearing until tier 14 which is much harder to get to without de-aspecting, and the skills themselves are too valuable to risk with testing until they get more results with lower tier skills.

C_Mantis

Their max is 1.5 times but they just dont have that many planets with the treaty but that is their cap.

Timspt8

I heard some people saying that they think the bandits are a plot, I disagree. Bandits are just being bandits, and I doubt the average bandit really cares much about whether they're stealing in an ascenders dutchy or a dutchy of someone else. To them it doesn't really matter whether they're ascenders or not, it's entirely irrelevant. Whether it's a super strong tier 25 ascender, or a tier 30 coming by to arrest them. Either way, they're not going to win.

Derze

I guess because they weren't allowed to get more planets. OR there is an expectation they will source planets themselves from chaotic space in the following decades/centuries

Bob Bryan

Busy with everything else basically.

Isiah Debarros

Ya I feel that should probably be one of the goals of his guild he should go for the low hanging fruit and try to get lower version skills for elements that dont exist like what they did for healing and the bandage skill

Isiah Debarros

The loss goods was probably then no one in their right mind with steal from people like them for so little

MikeL

So why hasn’t Matt made new skill rifts yet. An entire planet of healing skill rifts should be slightly profitable.

Isiah Debarros

I mean it's smart till they do to much and get caught

Enzo Elacqua

I was under the impression that their duke territory would be larger than the average due to it being a merger of two? Why did he mention that with 80% of planets delivered that only put them at half the usual size of a duchy?

Kevin DD

"They had nearly eighty percent of their allocated planets delivered, which would put them at only half of the typical duchy size" I thought their combined Duchy would be 1.5 times the size of a normal Duchy when done?

Bob Bryan

That's their name. I wanted to call them the fighting feelings for some reason.

James Faulkner

Tftc!

Alex

The more I think about it the more brilliant the senses' plan seems to me: The problem is that MAL are inevitably going to encounter issues in their duchies; that's just a thing that will happen when you're working with that many people. If the senses act with a light touch there's a very good chance that nobody will ever know they exist - for all the world it'll just look like MAL's policies don't really work, which is EXACTLY what the senses want.

Havokk

so the councils of senses are making their moves with all the random small issues hitting the Duchy ?

Alex

I wonder how many of their problems are a result of that little cabal that was trying to undermine them, and how many are just a result of bad luck and people being people.

Bob Bryan

Why do I have a feeling most of those were not accidents but the result of that group, chapters back, that wanted to try and take out matt and liz

Lucas hansen

Thanks mantis

nolan saylor

Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae! I am glad Matt is just as curious as the readers. Always fun to share curiosity. Though Matt sadly gets more tidbits of interesting lore and knowledge. Darn my mortal mind not being able to read tomes of knowledge in an hour. Ethical human experimentation... unless it is on your own kids. We saw with Susanne what sorts of people can become immortals, how shallowly they can care for their offspring. He appeared to care even. Matt should go to some career criminals and look up methods of money laundering... though Harper is probably provided the best methods already. -It is a funny reoccurring issue where anti-corruption laws actually being fairly effective is the issue. We've seen them be a solution as well but it is ironic how difficult it makes life for Matt. He just wants to be a philanthropist!!! (Next up is sending out emails as a Nigerian prince to struggling mortals... but he's planning on following through) I am happy to learn that crazy projects like a 'sky forge' exist. -I know Matt is about helping the common man, and I think it is good and all, but I really hope he splurges some in massive crazy things as well. De-Kelt cycle is similarly a fun idea. Again, Matt has problems with the law, and again with the best of intentions. Unlike many monopolies IRL Matt isn't trying to undercut the competition. Well, maybe a little but with better intentions as he isn't planning on raising the prices after undercutting others. I wonder how the Path will shape up with the aura potions. Again, still unsure how much of the trouble is normal and how much is the Shadow Cabal. Yeah they need Moore Duchy, this duchy is less than half the size of a normal duchy.
