David Bean

They are not going to stay at a 14-Tier disadvantage for very long. That’s Ascenders whole deal, they advance way faster than normal people. I don’t remember if it was this chapter specifically, but one of Matt’s threats to the guy even implied this, and it was one of the few things he said that caused the guy to hesitate.

KnightRider007

“Precedents that include Thalsettie, Bridgeright, Igor, and Ueck, which is as recent as nine thousand years ago” Jesus. The sheer concept of how *glacial* their legal proceedings must be… Maybe all formal presentations have to be made in Entish?

KnightRider007

A 14-Tier advantage is simply not something even an ascender can overcome.

KnightRider007

It does seem somewhat unfair that the other side is using Tier 40 level influence to actively sabotage, rather than… actually making better products to the benefit of the Empire.

KnightRider007

That’s actually an interesting question - does he have any legal method of excluding a particular company from benefits? Like, if he basically ends up powering the entire energy grid, can he say “But not those guys.”

Julie Smith

In my scene, they come in smug, they leave devastated by a sucker punch.

nolan saylor

I'm not saying it's not fun to read, nor fun to write, just somehow more aggravating. People dying in a war is worse. I think it might be that in a courtroom people are smug.

Julie Smith

My last couple of books I've had some courtroom scenes, one with an AI lawyer in a Marilyn Monroe avatar. I had to research courtroom procedure, but they were fun to write.

Julie Smith

I think that is his current plan. He wants to be feared for battle prowess and political acumen.

Julie Smith

Dynamite character development! Matt must control his anger and impatience to reach his goal of thwarting the coalition arrayed against him He's already doing more than I think the Senses expected. It'll be good to get their viewpoint again, especially if they lose this court case. Judge Hatfield seems to be a politically astute judge, who knows exactly how far he can push the boundaries of the law without being actually guilty. The case hinges on his judgment of possible harm from Manny and those bribing him. It's not likely he's received anything yet, so he's not yet guilty. If he judges he is likely to get caught if he receives his bribe post-trial, he'll opt out.

Josh Ward

Repetition that close is a bit jarring, and the second is unnecessary. "Ultimately, he decided to continue. His desires were ultimately outweighed by the responsibilities"

Hopea

Also even Matt's side being able to AI oath that they did develop such an engine actually solves nothing, as that doesn't prove that the other side also did not develop it independently. And if they were smart, they kept the number of people who knew about any shady activities and their involvement small, and fed the details to their development team in small bits, making it seem like they developed it naturally. Meaning that if asked for AI oaths, their R&D team might also be able to give positive claims that they developed the engine - they think it's true, and the AI has no evidence otherwise.

Hopea

And the whole Ascender thing has a lot of propaganda around it, nobody talks about the small stumbles. And these are, so far, very small stumbles.

Hopea

Direct combat wise, no-one wants to, because unless you're punching down several tiers you stand no chance, and that gets you in trouble. But Ascenders aren't automatically business and politics powerhouses, and that side doesn't have nearly as strict protections for tier difference. ie. No-one messes with Duke Waters, because to do battle with Duke Waters is insanity, and no-one tries to financially ruin Duke Waters because his wealth isn't based on things you can easily meddle with.

Trevor Mergen

Thanks

Kain

I actually like the fact the high tier established businesses don’t give a shit about ascenders and I think it makes sense in world. Think about it ascenders… ascend they don’t stick around tier 40-41 and twiddle their thumbs they piece the fuck out and even ascenders, normal ones ie not Waters, only punch up 1-2 tiers MAX by the late tier 30s early 40s. The leaders are like 44-45 right, so most ascenders probably piece out before even being able to fight them even with all their advanced skills. The owners of these businesses/clans in fact don’t fear MLA because they have no need to they’re ancient monsters and they’ve probably seen at least half a dozen ascender generations come and go and they’ll be here, in their minds, millions of years after MLA have died in a war or ascended.

Joseph Jenkins

Finally caught up. Blitzed all the chapters that aren't released in the books

MinE

Matt should be able to confirm since it is unlikely he ever turned his off, but there might be ways to fake Ai confirmation or he might not have definitive enough evidence in his Ai.

Alex

[AI] oaths can only verify information that the [AI] can confirm is true: they work really well for confirming someone can do a certain thing with their build, because a person’s build will always be accessible by their [AI]. [AI] oaths don’t work very well for determining whether somebody did something illegal: if someone’s [AI] was switched off during the period of time where they did shady shit, then an [AI] oath won’t work, because their [AI] will be unable to confirm or deny what happened in that period of time. If you remember back to the Seven Suns Kingdom arc when MAL got caught up in a conspiracy to place people under illegal indenture, Duke Ignite tells Liz that he cannot confirm whether King Bryce was in on the whole thing, because people used [AI] suppressor bands during the meeting where the plan was (presumably) concocted. Unless someone was so breathtakingly stupid that they forgot to turn off their [AI] while they were committing a crime, it’d be impossible to prove or disprove their guilt with an [AI] oath.

dragon

no, remember the other gp's paid the empire to NOT pay MLA to stay low tier

C_Mantis

The other option is we have no conflict outside the great power and that seems boring. I also hope it's clear not that many people are willing to cross them.

Tyler Thompson

I dunno, ascenders were just so hyped up through this whole story but not that the MC is one suddenly every person in the empire wants mess with the one ascender is is also family to some of the strongest people in the whole empire. The whole being an ascender thing just kinda doesn't seem to be that important anymore

Jeff Wells

IMO beating Falker with violence would be very unsatisfying. He'll be killing members of the Cabal eventually, for sure, but he is in the legal right and this legal system is portrayed as generally fair. He should be able to win legally, and we'll get to learn about a new aspect of the Empire in the process.

CursedValheru

Wouldn't this be easily resolved with AI backed oathes?

austin kutz

Inevitability as an aspect sounds scary af too. It has so many applications I can think of for both combat and noncombat situations. Even for his AI, he might be able to force it to eventuality come up with an answer to any question with enough mana. He can probably use it to come up with some really potent domain curses, or speed up healing since inevitability touches on time in the same way that endlessness touches on gravity and indomitable on space. A triple domain meld of those could probably just make someone disappear from existence.

austin kutz

I think it's more that it gives an outward excuse for him to rapidly increase his tier. If there were no obvious reason why he'd rapidly reach tier 35, the other great powers might just question why he's progressing so rapidly

Presten

Oh thank objective mortality

MinE

Frederick would do practically anything to get in Matt's good books. He is basically dealing with the same issue the enemy great powers are going to have; if Matt doesn't fund your faction, you won't be able to stay revelent.

MinE

After he get to tier 40+, he is the market. I really want to see the reaction of these guys when they realize they've been annoying the guy who produces more mana in a second than they've ever made themselves.

Sean McClain

Oh I suspect there will be legal drama but if Matt wins I bet there is a duel later

Aaron

She'd point out that he hasn't been using the training she beat into him for espionage. And he isn't being efficient on his efforts.

Bryan

She'd probably point out how much more damage he could have gotten away with and a few clues he missed

Timspt8

That's just called market manipulation

ByLAWphoto

I would make a counter argument: how many people would willingly do so now? I think it's obvious that even the thieves wouldn't have, had they known what they were actually stealing and from whom.

Aaron

If whatever Matt does was going to start the true war Manny would step in. So Matt is free to act as he likes. Further more Matt literally just did a major favor for Fredric but helping him gets the Knight orders reinstated. He should call in that favor.

Shawn Treants

And if he reveals his mana to that degree now.. he loses all true freedom and the real war begins. And he doesn't need to call in that kind of response. Just overkill.

SpriteOverDose

I completely agree. Matt has so much subtle influence that he’s not really thinking as a politician. He’s said he doesn’t want to be viewed as an ascender with the think second hit first mindset, but any other person in this situation would leverage their connections and especially their ability to influence the empires economy like he can. If he truly wants to help the lower tiers, wouldn’t it be more effective to just rid the opposition itself?

Alex

Idk, im kind of hoping for some juicy legal drama :) and then matt can beat some other evil but unrelated people up

Violet

Right, so Emanuel is letting this run for multiple reasons, and I'm sure the largest is that it forces Matt and Liz to hone themselves and assert their power. But I get the feeling the conversation about increasing in Tier is a major factor here. How many of these people willingly fuck with Matt if he's Tier 35+? How many of them willingly fuck with Matt if he's Tier 35+ and has an Aspect?

Tsorov

I wouldn't call him a prick, I would say he is tired of living

Aaron

Then stop sending in mana. They need his mana too much to say no.

Tsorov

And Frederick would say no. Because this is not a problem that is that gigantic. Yes, these engines would make the lower tier peoples life easier, but that doesn't really affect the higher tiers of the empires strength. Also, it would mean relying on powerfull people to solve all his problems, which is a bad habit to develop

Sean McClain

So this will end in a duel, right (between the opposing guild heads)? But will it be a duel now (11 tiers is a lot so unlikely) or in some amount of time, like say 50 or 100 years (matt delves to reach tier 30 and wins easily) or Alternatively Matt accepts but picks a champion of the appropriate tier (his good friend Duke Waters)

Tsorov

That is the problem. He is. He can't show that he has endless mana, or the real war comes a few thousand years and at least ten to fifteen tiers too early. He has to work with the limited ressources he can freely use

Tsorov

I don't think the problem is making the better engine, the problem Matt has is that his enemys are delaying his guilds inventions from going into the open market by patenting the rights to all similar products. Making a better one would take time, and that would be exactly what the "enemy" wants.

Aaron

How do you think Luna will respond when she learns how Matt responded to this attack?

Aaron

If the emperor didn't want him to spend as much mana as it took to crush his enemies he should have said so.

C_Mantis

So I can say there isnt a cliff for the 23rd. I made sure of that

Aaron

He'd accomplish the same thing by hiring people to investigate and crush them. And it's definitely about efficiency when you know that you're being attacked from multiple directions. You can't just make one counter move at a time. You need to respond with overwhelming force.

HoneydewHolt

It's not about speed or efficiency; it's about sending a message to all future groups that try to interfere with his guild that he won't take it lying down and is not afraid of using force to get it done. The engine's being patented and was not hit, his aura potions were what was hit and they have been shipping them for quite a while at this point. He is not yet strong enough to freely spend his mana like that he has to launder it through the emperor. If the emperor appears to give too much to Matt there will be other issues so he can't just spend his way out.

Jana

This might be a good opportunity to work with Liz’s Bondsman skills again, setting up something like their own internal investigation team (and if Matt and Liz weren’t so nice I’d say a sabotage the Asshole- team as well) and make contracts. I know she doesn’t like the skill but I don’t think there’s too much wrong with it when both parties agree and fully understand what they are agreeing to. That skill has been seriously underused.

Wheels42

Excellent work but I am going to struggle with this arc i think. I can't enjoy injustice arcs, well written ones sting too close to home and I get frustrated 😅 Well done on the writing though, I'm sure the cliff awaiting us on 23rd is going to be a bad one haha

David Bean

Lol, it’s a good thing he picked Ascender as his career then. It’s the only profession where the rules are basically only mild suggestions.

Alex

I've been thinking about this arc a bit, and I think - weird as it may sound - that it genuinely has the potential to help Matt figure out his Aspect. What we have here is a group of bad actors trying to create enough issues for Titan's Torch that they can cut the guild off at the knees. These people believe that Titan's Torch is funded by dispensation from the Emperor as a reward for contributions to the Empire, both by Matt personally, and by the guild itself. The ultimate goal of this group is to run enough interference that they can successfully petition the Emperor to cut funding to the guild by arguing that the guild is ineffective, and doesn't deserve the funding it's getting. What these bad actors don't realize is that Titan's Torch is funded by Matt himself, the funds are just being laundered through the Emperor. Titan's Torch can weather this storm because the guild is financially self-sufficient; these legal and supply troubles are irritating, yes, but they kind of don't matter because the victory condition that these people are reaching for isn't actually attainable - the Emperor is not going to stop giving Matt his own money. There's a bunch of different ways this situation can play out - I'm not going to claim I can guess what all of them are, or which one will actually happen, but I think Matt wins in all of them. Even if he loses in court now, so long as he finds out who is fucking with him, he can put them on his shitlist for when his Talents go public, which will be a much worse punishment for these assholes than actually beating them in court. His victory is INEVITABLE, because you can't fight a financial war against a guy with endless money. Back when Matt first pulls off his Domain Meld he thinks for a brief moment "I am Inevitable", which I believe is the phrase for his Aspect. While this whole situation will be annoying for Matt, I think it will give him the opportunity to appreciate how inevitable he really is, because he can just keep throwing money at this problem until it goes away - and it WILL go away, because when these people realize that the bridge they're burning leads to an endless mana fountain they'll give anything and everything they have to get back in his good graces again. He may genuinely be better off losing right now, because it'll allow him to squeeze these bastards that much harder later on.

Isabelle Dindal

Loved the chapter but really wanted Lila to eat him by the end. Ugh I feel his rage.

fruit dragon

And Make sure to waste samana making an even better version of the engine and undercut every other product that company makes and sell it at cost

fruit dragon

Honest question here. Stocks are a thing in the empire right? If so, Matt should use his ungodly amount of money to short The stock of the company he is currently in a legal battle with and also use his infinite amount of social clout to make everybody believe that they f***** with an ascender and have their investors divest

Aaron

Also why did Matt go racing off after the people that hit his shipments. He should have hired people to investigate. It would have been much faster. And if they were afraid the engine shipment being hit shouldn't they have hired a high tier person for security. Matt should simply bury his opponents using hired bodies. It's not like he's going to run out of mana to pay people.

Aaron

To be honest this just feels like Matt not taking advantage of his leverage over the empire. He should simply ask Fredric who is attacking his Duchy and withhold mana transfers until he gets information.

Christopher

This entire chapter has made me angry haha

Christopher

Imagine if earth billionaires lived forever; it’s unfortunately easy to imagine how they would behave.

Mayukh Joshi

Yep, just IRL things

C_Mantis

start of last book after the war when they got their duchy. Dont remember the chapter off the top of my head tho.

Jacob Barclay

What chapter did Manny look into the future and tell them to behave?

David Bean

I can’t understand how anyone who’s seen what MAL are capable of from their fights in the war, would be willing to treat one of them like that to their face. You gotta be either really brave or really stupid…

Zack

He should wait until he wins the game their way, *then* send them through the wall.

C_Mantis

Chapter 358 last pov

Isiah Debarros

Ya but weirdly want him to act that way

Jeppe Fiig

Man what an insane level of pettiness and greed

C_Mantis

As much as I love SVU this wont turn into that. I def cant write that much drama bs lol.

Eddie

Does anyone know the chapter number where the cabal had that initial meeting and agreed to mess with MLA?

MikeL

PoA: The Court Room Arc. Dun-dun.

T

I have the feeling that Matt still is to soft on the established powers throw someone through a wall smash some heads even Lila’s text should have been a clear sign on what to do threaten them like he did with the ass and maybe destroy a few buildings in the meantime

C_Mantis

hahaha. I will say this wont turn into a law story or anything of the like but as for everything else. Well have to find out after our break. I'm not sure Matt knows how to follow rules.

MinE

Prick is an understatement, the guy literally assumed guilt and then insulted an Ascender.

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter

nolan saylor

More to read! Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae! I admit I wouldn't mind a little revenge. It's not smart, which just adds to the aggravation. I do hope we at least get some PoVs when Matt's mana is revealed and the Shadow Cabal gets to realize they and theirs will be left for last. Maybe they'll try and jump ship. Well, is this what people wanted when they asked for more combat? Since they got legal combat... the most annoying kind of combat. I may need to rescind my thanks to Mantis for this chapter.
