The aperology research accelerates! Matt also gets updates from Soerilia and provides nudges in the right direction. No blow-up yet. I wonder if travel mana will be incorporated into the train systems?

Alex

Matt proved that mana does turn into essence when you compress it enough (which everyone 'knows' but probably hasn't been proven empirically), and he made a neutral aura rift, which is basically like an endless ascension since it would allow anyone to make a perfect Concept.

Alexander Brosseau

He made neutral mana and a neutral mana rift. I believe he also condensed enough mana down to make essence.

Aaron Hardin

Hereditary nobility as rulers actually works a lot better in this universe than in reality. The issue in reality is that people are mortal with relatively short lifespans, and the chance of the head of a noble house or a King above them dying and leaving an unprepared or a poor successor is high, to the point it will happen. With the immortality in this world, there is plenty of time and opportunities for nobles to have to test their successors to make sure they are competent, so the risk of both an unprepared successor or a poor successor is much, much less, and the leadership at the top over the nobility has been good, keeping the nobles on track.

If I recall correctly, minkalla allowed him theoretically infinite time that he used to devise a unaspected aura rift, however minkalla takes away your memories of how you accomplished what you did, only letting you know it is possible

Andromeda Adams

Tyftc it was very enjoyable! Can’t wait to see what they come up with.

What was it he made in minkalla?

Issue 1 with that is the lifespan thing. If you assume that anybody under age X is a child who can't make their own decisions, and X is longer than a non-cultivator's lifespan... well, most of the population will be born, live, and die without ever being allowed to make their own choices. Children they may be by Matt's standards, but he needs to let them try if they're ever going to grow. Issue 2 is the fact that... Matt has a lot of experience in aperology, and delving, and how to kill a strike team specifically tailored to counter his combat skills. But governance? He's pretty damn new at it even by mortal standards, and definitely doesn't have the perspective that most of the world's leaders have regarding its people. The fact that their priorities are different isn't a bug, it's a feature. Issue 3 is that anyone without a clone skill, regardless of power level, can only be in one place at a time. Matt has a commitment to delivering aura rifts to the entire Empire and beyond, and trying to force Soerilia to conform precisely to his plans is going to take a LONG time. Finally, while this may be an issue of sci-fi scaling... 3 people dead? I'm pretty sure you'd get more casualties from a bad rift delve on an Empire world. If that's the only issue Matt's experienced so far, things are going pretty well.

> These weren’t children, and they were capable of making their own choices, even if they led to mistakes and losses. He needed to remember that. But like, they are basically children. They're mortals who have only lived for a few decades, and they definitely can't make their own choices, because they prioritize completely different things than what Matt prioritizes. Those three people who died could have very easily not died if Matt just stepped in or had more supervision over the planet.

I love it so much, yet every time I finish the new chapter, I am in agony

All three of your points can apply to any person who has been raised to support a political system. A kid in a democracy who set a goal to be president, took all the correct civics classes, got the right degrees in higher education, did the 'time' as an intern to some politician, and rose up in the ranks as an elected official would also apply to your three points. The problem with any form of long-established political rulership is that power, while not necessarily corrupting, is all consuming. A noble or political family of any stripe is going to work to gather as much power into their control as possible, and there comes a point where society stagnates. To avoid this, 'new blood' needs to be introduced into the system, often forcefully. That is the real benefit of having non-nobility taking up noble positions. They shake things up and keep power from becoming too stratified.

Alex

As to your point about Matt working with the hereditary nobility faction: I actually think the hereditary nobility faction has a point. Hear me out; back in the tournament arc when Frederic is talking about hereditary nobility he says he believes it's a superior form of governance because hereditary nobles are 1. Raised from a young age to be leaders, and therefore make better rulers than commoners who take leadership positions without any background or experience. 2. Are more invested in their fiefdoms because they represent their family legacy. 3. Make inherently better leaders than individuals who are raised to the peerage by dint of their martial prowess - to paraphrase monty python, being able to smack people real good is no basis for a system of government. You're much better off giving noble titles to people who were born and raised to be leaders rather than fighters - the job is about leading, not fighting after all. I think these points are absolutely correct, IF you're talking about a noble house that takes their responsibility seriously and raises their young scions to be effective leaders. Honorable and effective noble lineages exist (the Sophron dynasty is a good example), the question comes down to whether they represent the majority of the hereditary faction or not - at this point in time I don't think we have a large enough sample size to really answer that question. I think Frederic strongly believes that his faction is mostly made up of good apples, and if he's right about that, he's probably correct about his political views. However, if the hereditary noble faction is made up of entitled twats who think they're inherently better than the common man (like the Junipers), then Frederic's ideology is extremely dangerous because his goal is to prevent hereditary noble families from ever losing their power. In summary, I think Frederic's viewpoint is aspirational, but not wrong. He makes some valid points, but they're only valid in an ideal world where the nobles actually care about their duties and their subjects, which may or may not be the case.

Thanks for the chapter! Seeing Matt's struggles in learning how to deal with "normal" people (non-Ascenders) is fun. Now to see how many brain aneurysms that learning experience causes!

Hoid

Thanks for the chapter! ❤️ And also the heads up about Apple ☹️. Those guys need to fix their shit

Xarow

Thank you for the great chapter. Enjoying how you are fleshing out his guild and Duchy. It is leaving me very excited.

Hangwind

I'm not seeing the trap, but we might not have enough info to see the trap yet.

I love that Aperology seems more difficult in a fitting and the impossible logistics are being brought to bear in a fun manner

Thanks Mantis! Apple has completely lost the plot 😡 I love the aperology chapters, yay! I wish Matt will be able to have a quick win to jump start the guild's reputation beyond the announcement hype!

Thanks Mantis! I like Matt's crew realizing that they have access to all the mana they can want. I wonder if they will begin to theorize... Gotta acknowledge how the media can be used to influence opinions. I am happy with the outpouring of support. Trusting the philanthropic nature of others is hard. Maybe they are being genuine, or perhaps they are using this to boost their public reputation. Maybe trying to get on the good side of the current Ascenders who have ties to the throne. The results are at least a positive. The outpouring of thanks is indeed delightful. Matt is more readily able to feel that he is helping people. The fact that even those in other GPs are seeing this and benefitting is nice. I wonder what general sentiment is. If any of the other GPs have spun the story in an odd or unflattering way. Variations of elemental aura, yet not different elements or called sub aspects. Interesting. It's kinda amusing that Matt's work has a similar result to Melinda's goal. Immortality for all. Interesting for Matt to have an anti-reform hereditary noble as his vice-guild leader. Will be interesting to see them interact. With people being immortal, and families lasting for eons, someone being the third is kinda boring. I want this guy, or someone, to be the 4006th. I wonder if Kees will end up not ascending. Curiosity at this new free mana guild. A chance at T50. I wonder if any will delay their ascension before the chance at T50 is known. -Will any follow the idea more than the contracts.? Big parties are indeed a lot. Well, I guess that was a rather bland reveal of the troubles on Sorellia being handled. No reveling in bad people getting their just desserts. The only people who seem to have paid the price are the soldiers these in charge sent. until next time...
