Dominic Harper

In enjoying the break in adventure and learning more about Matt's exploration of aperology.

Eric

Honestly these rift chapters are killing the story. If he actually discovered something or found some underlying mechanic that would make the story progress. But this entire chapter could be thrown away and no one would ever notice. Example could you just run a viable rift a few times and use the items and aura to populate the next tier up. That would further specify what you want the rift to be as it grew.

Rodney

I know where avoiding it for purposes of the story and how it's being told but I still can't wait for Matt to get The clone skill so that he can do two things at once or however the skill works maybe he can make more than one but having a management clone would be OP lol

Thomas Todd

My theory is that part of it is because of domains, they link cultivators to the realm which in turn causes some of their beliefs to be reflected across the realm. I imagine it requires a massive concentration of that belief from people before even the smallest thing happens but over million or billions of years with constant belief from those with domains it becomes part of the realm. We've heard about an example of this with Liz saying they health potions changed from green to red because that's what people expected

Thomas Todd

I wonder if it's an effect of domains, people link themselves with the realm through their domains and so the their beliefs get reflected to some extent

Thomas Todd

The rift making stuff is just an intro we will start to see stuff going wrong as it progresses although I do imagine the experiments will still have their place in the story. But I do think this arc will be less punch them in the face issues and more political

gideon ferrier

I just thought of something. I don't know if I am cought up on all chapters but I just want to see post this on the newest chapter. So to level up a world the world has to have enuff essence. And to make more essence to need to have enuff mana flowing through the world for a long enuff time for the world to condense it euff to turn mana into essence. The second option is for a rift to cycle with enuff mana to turn it into essence without having to much mana to level itself up And, or create a dungeon break. But matt has all he needs to efficiently mass produce essence. Essentially matt puts just the right amount of manna in a rift to have it start the process of it cycling it into essence. Now on a small teir world that is not enuff to do much and you would need to do this with every 15 min cycle of decades if not centuries to achieve enuff essence. However with the guy who can change rift rewards and force it to cycle to a new instance. You would no longer need to wait the 15 minutes for it to cycle. Have him cycle it every 15 mil sec and have matt put in the manna and in just a few sec you would efficiently have had a single rift running at full essence generating charge for years. (I didn't do the math but I could) To sum it up Step 1 ) - put manna in rift to have it convert it into essence but not creat a rift break. Step 2) - force a cycle change. Step 3) - do again as fast a possible. On lower tier planets this is probably more practical because the you would need less mana to fill it to capacity. A tier 45 rift would not be filled to capacity it 15min without matt at tier 50 or something.

Ido Pazi

yea I find that interesting aswell.

Brandon dixon

I get that, personally I’m more interested in seeing how Matt’s ongoing attempt at integrating the veiled world into the Empire is going to go.

Ido Pazi

oh the down time Is great dont get me wrong, having the characters work on crafting potions / runes / bloodlines to increase their own power level is fantastic. rift creation is different since it serves no purpose other than "the good of the realm" which is why I find it dull.

Brandon dixon

I strongly disagree, I personally dislike stories that jump from one crisis to another without any kind of down time for the characters.

Ido Pazi

again, love the fiction and the story so far but now that the war is over and the main cast has finished the path... feels like I'm missing the "main objective" of this arc.

Ido Pazi

Heya, personal opinion but having all these rift making chapters especially one after the other (and the fictional science behind it) is making me lose interest. Is it going to be the main focus from now on?

Sam Hayman

Thanks must of forgotten that glad I’m currently rereading :)

Alex

Impossible. In the early days of the war Matt unleashes a superpowered breach on an enemy supply convoy, and he goes over all the ways that using that much mana at once gives him issues — he specifically states that you can’t form a Rift in chaotic space, so he at least didn’t have to worry about his spell trying to turn itself into a Rift.

Sam Hayman

Just had a thought what would happen if Matt and the guild made a rift inside chaotic space?

Kelly Bryan

My answer to why Matt doesnt do it is efficiency. Thats the standard terraforming plan that takes tens of thousands of years, their idea of kickstarting it is pretty long term. It also mentions adding essence speeds it up, and rifts are exceptional at generating essence from very little mana (relatively)

Hokgen

I understand that, but we have heard Matt say that the gravity near the core of a planet is enough to compress mana to essence to then have it form a core natraly. Because that is how planets tier up without outside forces same as when essece drifts in to the core. What I'm getting at is why doesn't he just make a mana cystal around the molten and the have it leak mana in to the core. like what they do for custom bult planets. what I am referencing "Step 3: Create the essence core. That was mostly a natural process, but it could be kick-started by seeding the planet with approximately ten trillion mana, typically from a Tier 40 mana stone. Less total mana could be used by either adding essence directly or letting the process take longer"

C_Mantis

well get there. Those are what we are going to end up calling multi-elemental rifts and thats will be its own whole thing. Just later.

Kelly Bryan

The mana required isnt the problem, its the forces to compress the mana into essence. Matt proved he can do that in Minkalla but does not know how or what kind of efficiency hed get. Yes there are references to tier 0 planets. Tier 0 isnt an absence of essence in something, its the lack of an essence core in something. Planets inside rifts are made of material that match the rift's tier, but they lack an essence core so when they are removed from the rift the essence in their materials compacts into an essence core much weaker than the tier of the rift they went into.

Alex

Yes - he sort of has already if you count his crystallized [Sword Twin]s. There's also a bit when he's talking about upgrading [Cracked Phantom Armor] where he floats the idea that an upgrade might allow him to form weapons from the skill - he says that would be a bit of a waste since he could do that with his Tier 25 Talent, so it's something he's definitely aware of being able to do. Matt hasn't really invested much in the way of making melee weapons out of mana crystals since his sword from Project Breach is frankly better than anything he has any hope of making, but it's something he could look into in the future. His growth sword also gained the ability to change its material properties and shape at Tier 25 by being fed things, so it's possible he might start feeding mana crystal to his sword to make it a mana crystal blade.

Alex

There’s a line waaay back on the training planet where Liz says that once upon a time Rift health potions changed color from green to red because enough people believed that a health potion should be red, so the Realm changed to reflect that. There’s definitely some element of the Realm being a reflection of the collective consciousness of the people.

Hokgen

That is the problem I am referring to. If it only takes ten trillion mana to make a tier 1 pantary essence core that is one and a half days wich is well within a resonable time frame for even a mortals let alone Matt and his research teams. Granted making higher tier worlds by hand would probly take to long for this inital research.

Matt Brown

It would be pretty cool if they could guarantee a challenge rift every time. I doubt it’s possible as the rift seems to “decide” when to do it iirc

Matt Brown

The empire has pretty hard price ceilings and a fairly fixed economy. Tier 4s concept bottles are already controlled and made cheaper to people on the path. Is there gonna be corruption? Yeah but from everything we’ve seen of manny and the other royals, trying to price gouge doesn’t seem like the type of thing they’d allow to run rampant. Also, is it even profitable to price gouge at low tiers. Anyone important is presumably a t10 that can just delve a t9 rift for the same profit that upping the prices can

Andromeda Adams

Tyftc I loved it

Alexander

The realm decides bro. That's why rift drops mirror manmade things. Because the realm clearly has a will.

ByLAWphoto

Speaking as a tier 0, ...where can I get a bug repellent formation? 'Cause something that will last for 5-10 years would be GREAT.

Luna

Yes we need fantasy google

Charlottef

Even if the customers don't get a reduced price, lower running cost for long distance trains should make creating routes to the interior areas, that have more rifts, more economically viable for both settlement and delving/cultivation purposes. Not everything needs to result in a direct cost reduction to be beneficial, as Matt seems to want them to be. Though it doesn't say it directly in the first book, I am assuming that the initial outlay for infrastructure, combined with the continuous outlay for transport and barrier cost was why the previous nobles on lilly didn't develop the interior. Maybe the next thing his guild should look at is some sort of barrier mana type?

Charlottef

It is chapter 341, for those that want to know. I have just re-read recently myself. I think wanderer117 is correct about the timing. I've been thinking about the reason Matt is annoyed. Whilst it does not say how many others besides kai are unawakened, I assume he is not the only one. Matt specifically said that those going to the monster infested regions should be volunteers. How can they volunteer if they don't know what is going on and haven't been awakened?

someone

if i understand the timeline he worked for a few months on his own then 4 with small team follower by 1 years so more like 28 years away

Nathan Sto

I liked the idea that someone suggested about the patterns of weapons to elements being a result of cultivators using them together, as though the history of cultivation had etched itself into the fabric of reality.

Nathan Sto

If I understand correctly, Tier 0 is just when there's no essence in something. So mundane metal, an unawakened human, or elements made with "create _____" spells.

Trevor Mergen

Thanks!

Hokgen

The problem with that is there is no reference to tier 0 being a thing, and from what we see in the people tier 1 is when they get an essence core’s. So I see no reason why it would not hold true for planets

Kelly Bryan

He could create a tier 0 planet, not tier 1, its creating the essence core that is the tough part. But I imagine at higher tiers once he figures out the how he could go full Magrathea.

cel

i was kinda surprised that he didn’t think of putting rifts on display cases so he could get more information about them but i guess it’s not his skill and also he probably has better ways of getting info about his rifts

Elaine

good chappie

Jason Hatter

🤣 fair

CringeWorthyStudios

I think the ‘cold’ part is why ice is fundamental seperate to crystal.

Pyrefiend

They should examine large scale statistics for delvers, maybe it will help them find a correlation between an element and it's preferred weapon type.

Matt

Hey, don't crush me dreams! I am enjoying this fantasy world with the fantasy economy where good things happen from business.

Jacob

Isn't Fire Water, Native American Alcohol?

Matt H

I know we're skipping over a bunch of the details when it comes to their research, but I'm still a little disappointed in Matt that he didn't try a set of Ice (50%) + Air (25%) + Water (25%) rifts for his first set of tests in addition to the pure Ice and the Air + Water sets. His guild is, basically, trying to create a variety of multi-dimensional phase diagrams when it comes to the various mana types so getting a wide variety of data points before trying to tweak the formulae seems reasonable. Interesting and enjoyable chapter, though! Thanks!

Lorevi Q

It kinda frustrates me when worlds decide things like what is and isn't a weapon. It doesn't make much sense to me it seems like something that should be decided by the people in the world not some random law of the universe. Like why is ice the ice element and not the crystal element anyway? Since ice is crystalline. Is ice just a subset of crystal? Who decides this? Idk feels weird

Matt H

True, but in the context of the story he IS, essentially, a child when it comes to how long he's lived, what all he's experienced, how long things take at T15+, etc. This is only exacerbated by being Ascenders: they advance through the tiers faster than ANYONE else in the realm and never, really, had a chance to adjust to an immortal timeframe at T15. Everything that happens now really is "baby-immortal's first steps".

C_Mantis

Correct I switched the ice numbers around ty

Adam Fellon

Does anyone have the chapter number for that? I was going to re-read it with the newer context

Kelly Bryan

Dont tell Leon and Mara about the fire-water rift. They'll want a tier 48 version made to play around in.

Violet

For a multi-hundred year old, he is adorably naive about political economics.

Havokk

Id love to see Matt at a T10 tournament introducing the new T10 durability potion to the Empire..... Though the idea of a magically induced bout of explosive diarrhea is going right into the night terror pile

Isiah Debarros

Oh that's an idea

Jason Hatter

Silly Matt, thinking consumers will actually see a price savings...

Andrew K

Plus they're the sort of lunatics who tend to insist on treating what basically anyone else would consider a debilitating condition as a minor inconvenience. . .and have the ability and fortitude to pull it off.

The first chapter gives some strong hints. Like from Kia's perspective the tunnel through the mountain range was completed 20 years ago and took 10 years to make. The tunnel was only started once they decided to go with the Roland Method and I think it's only been a few months since then, so Kia is from 29 to 30 years in the future.

BagFullOfLizards

“The sample size was too small to really conclude anything, but three of his rifts Tiered up with air and water survived the Tier up without unaspecting, versus the two ice rifts that failed. After uploading his thoughts to the aperology section of the AI, Matt kept creating rifts until he had a full dozen ice Tier 6 rifts.” Are the air and water rifts supposed to be more successful? Because this says that three of them survived, but four of the pure ice ones did. (Two failed out of six means four survived).

Aaron Hardin

yes, except that the Ascenders are the top 20 of quintillions of quintillions of people, so not just top 1%, they are the top .000000000000000000001% percent or so of the population (I may need more zeros, I don't have a sense of the entire population across all powers).

Aaron Hardin

I think that sounds more like methods mana are used can be countered (i.e. the white/black whole combination disrupted the ways that others used mana, preventing them from using mana, but didn't actually negate mana's existence, so higher tiers would likely resist the disruption). Specific pieces of magic may have an inverse, so there may be a full counter to each specific magic, but that is different for each piece of magic and does not combine into a general anti-magic.

James Townsend

I'm still mad I can't guess when the scene of Matt from the first chapter will happen. I mean there's a few ways for the first planet of his dukedom to go sideways still, but the longer it goes without being messed up, the more I want it to happen!

Sean McClain

Wasn't Matt's black/white hole combine a sort of anti magic field well more like a mass magic disruption blast but it amounts to the same thing except it's not really persistent. But that implies there may be an underlining truth of Mana where you can create a total magic disruption pulse by having conflicting mana auras perfectly invert each other or something along those lines. Could be possible to make a magic nullifying field.

Disclancer

You need to draw a encircled pentagram with enochian runes for expulsion and cleansing around your bed to get rid of the bed bugs, but importantly, rather than salt you need to use diatomaceous earth to make the formation work. Don't ask me how it works, but it does!

A B

Edit suggestion: parity correct -> partly correct

Disclancer

"They weren’t even that complicated or hard to make, and if produced in batches by a Tier 5 enchanter, they could be stockpiled during slower times of the year, even by those same students once they progressed past the bigger phase" -> Should this be **beginner** phase? "Back when he did these tests as a Tier 6, they had needed the swords to actualize aura, and all of the adamantly rare successes used a weapon. But the more they tried to break into level two mana types, Matt felt the sword seeds were only parity correct" -> Did you mean to use *adamantly* instead of *admittedly* here? And I think *parity* should be *partially*?

RedLeaf

Damn, now I wish we could get mosquito-repellant formations IRL! One for bed bugs would be amazing as well.

C_Mantis

blackwater is shadow and water element and is accordingly rare

Colin Groh

What's blackwater again?

SoaringPickle

That sounds like the perfect skill for Matt to use in Aperology. Put the rifts on display and take a gander at them.

C_Mantis

There really isnt one, or I dont have one planned. Neutral is the base to be filled. Its like ice cream, you can add flavors but you still need the base of 'ice cream'.

Owen Kaz

Did we ever get a clear answer as to how much Mana it took for Matt to figure out a neutral Mana rift? I know he's certainly not gonna focus on it any time soon (or maybe he will?) but I truly feel like he's gonna start laying the groundwork for his attempts soon.

Discordian23

Right, the Group chat is basically all the top professionals in the world in regards to combat, to them it is easy barely an inconvenience.

MikeL

So can Matt create Mana Crystal shaped like Weapons to use? Maybe even with aspected mana.

Sean Shivers

Going back to the og explanation for challenge rifts... it's clear rifts, to some extent, consume things that are within them. And yet aperology involves external mana infusions. Seems like a route they should look into for increasing rift stability an naturalistic rift development. Though i imagine the majority of mana still comes in externally over time... deaths in rifts seem like the only time they would get large infusions.

Anime Problem

Ok that still makes me wonder what the inverse to neutral mana is

C_Mantis

there isnt like a anti magic magic or material really. There are ways to disrupt magic but not like some stories create.

Anime Problem

They're basically the 1% of people who have no trouble with understanding mana or cultivation while skill creation is a little harder to do than merging them if I remember right

Anime Problem

I've got a question is anti-magic a thing in this story could matt develop anti magic rifts or more specifically a mana neutralization skill if it isn't

A Flashy BR

I'm excited to see the reactions across the Empire

Hokgen

Shouldn’t Matt already be capable to make a tier one planet? Because if I remember correctly when they were on the terraforming planet at tier 15 one of the books Matt read about the process said to took only ten trillion mana. Relativity chapter is 240

Alex

It's funny how skill merging is first introduced as this incredibly difficult and dangerous thing you can do that has an extremely high failure rate, and often takes centuries of careful meditation to pull off, then the Ascender group chat is just like "yeah, so merge X skill with Y for starters, then mod it a bit" like it's not big deal.

C_Mantis

Steam is made with fire, water, and air actually. However we will go into what we are calling multi elemental rifts eventually. IE instead of fire water air rift making a steam rift you have a fire water air rift made of the constituent parts but not merged, making some weird stuff like fire water possible without creating a whole new element!

Nathan

Thanks Mantis!

Keegan Moss

Once the aura rifts are finally finished it will be a climatic finish

Alex

I think firewater is just steam? I'm not trying to be a snarky asshole here, I just don't think firewater could be a thing since steam would be the preferred result from mixing those mana types.

Derze

thanks for the chapter

Bob Bryan

After they make the blackwater Rift, hope they keep with that a bit and make a new skill or 2. Then make a firewater rift.

Deathburn

They're edging the rifts

nolan saylor

Thanks Mantis! ‘The only side effect was explosive diarrhea’ It sucks. Then you realize it may literally be explosive. I am happy to see the idea of an endless planet mentioned. I am curious if it would improve the odds of aura rifts stabilizing. Perhaps even popping up naturally. I wonder if other GPs have a different spread of immortals. Like with the Sect’s focus on combat so they lack managers or cooks. Is it a lot of warriors making a hobby of other parts. Or people with family strong enough to support their immortality but the person is relegated to serving the warriors. Like how some nobles had their kids become servants of the strong. Long term testing as a hobby is admittedly fun. Still waiting on the movie made via stop-motion bonsai trees. I wonder how Mantis and the support team went about creating rifts. They had other difficulties. Did they end working more forwards or backwards? Getting genuine false starts or getting it immediately and having to think up other ideas for Titan’s Torch to fail with. Battle maniacs are battle maniacs. I appreciate the desire of spectacle for the readers. It would be a minor bit of excitement to see the discussed skill used. As well as how it ended up being used. Always good to have fun or humor remind you of your spouse. I would’ve guessed the spear would be lightning. Maybe two can be the same, or lightning will be a javelin/ throwing spear. Nice to have Matt offering help. Able to participate expertise as well as mana. And I guess knack. Oh, non-humanoid simple weapons. Aster’s ice cream as a proof of no bad blood depends entirely on the flavor. Year long conversations. I wanna nerd out! I wonder if we’ll see any espionage, someone trying to sell the designs to a guild. Attempt is more likely to happen, but less entertaining to have the result of. Will the saved cost be passed on to mortals?

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter
