Julie Smith

Good points, but have they ever fought Masters before? Do they have a clue of what that means? Plus, they have the Sect hubris that those outside the Sect can't be as good.

KnightRider007

I dunno. Surely they realise that they’re fighting Masters? Legion and Titan are high profile, and the population of the planet was told where they were going

Julie Smith

A great cliffhanger ending! We are anticipating the fight. Matt and Liz will, ironically, be underestimated since they're fighting three tiers up. But the Sect leaders have no idea of what they're fighting.

Tim Kilgore

Hello. New here. Could someone please tell me where bk 8 begins? Thanks Absolute love this series.

Tommy

Blood moon during blood moon phase - vampire moon?

Jsar

It could also be a way for Matt to practice tiering up worlds where the other powers can't see. Now I'm imaging a Tier 35 or 40 Matt that has taken his aperology research and applied it to making custom planets. Next level guild.

Alex

Seeding the universes with new worlds sounds like an interesting way to expand the Great Powers in my opinion: imagine if someone deliberately went about creating new worlds to build new realspace crossings. Probability says the crossings would end up outside the Great Powers as their placement in chaotic space would effectively be random, but those travel paths could be used as beach-heads to expand the Great Powers into new regions of deep chaotic space. It would open up a whole new avenue of expansion. That expansion method would be reliant on realspace travel as opposed to chaotic space travel (which I believe was stated as being more expensive), but cheap realspace travel could become a project for Titan's Torch, and Matt's mana would eventually make it a non-issue anyway.

C_Mantis

I'm definitely going to steal a few of those ideas so thank you. As for your question, at the end, the manufactured part comes a lot from technology skills and riffs are all natural phenomenons but tiers is simply a codification of cultivation in general. It's been simplified refined, tested, modified over and over by a million and one experts until you have what we have seen in the story which is 50 distinct crunches. It's entirely possible to do something more like a typical cultivation novel with nine realms and then a major breakthrough, but this is what they found is the most efficient/ easiest method.

Jsar

First thank you for replying, I'm not trying to call you out, just a fan with too much time on their hands! I realize this is a question that has little to no impact on the story and is only a personal itch of mine, so thank you for indulging me. Love the story. I think the chaotic space being the focus point of the empires is a great way of doing things. The universe setup with the realms above and below is quite interesting, even if we never get to see the realms above. Each 'world' having a complete and separate universe behind it is wild to me though. The size of everything just ballooned so very much. I can't let this opportunity pass to throw out a couple thoughts on the topic now. First, I don't think you'd have to deal with the issues you don't want to if you had a 'world' per galaxy, or even a few per galaxy. Unless I missed it, no one is zipping around at warp speed in the real realm, so travel between far flung worlds is virtually irrelevant to being in different universes. Just feels like too much empty space, but that's a me issue! I would just ignore the issue of aliens if that's what you meant by other civilizations, if they can appear in multiple universes, they can do it in the same one too. On the flip side of where I recognize I was completely wrong in my understanding of 'universe' it creates a few interesting avenues to explore. Are all universes roughly the same size and or shape, do they know, can the tier 50's tell with their realm connection? I have to imagine somewhere in history someone did exactly what you said above and tried to expand their world's universe and just seeded the hell out of it. Sounds like something Gardner Royal might do. Love to see something like that in a future chapter. Final reach goal question that is probably a none of my business topic. The Mattverse, has always felt somewhat 'manufactured' in the way the rifts and skills and clear tiers work. Is it in lore than somewhere in the extreme ancient past a supreme power of some kind ordered the universe like this, or is it natural/unexplained in the history you've built? Again thanks for taking the time, I look forward to all your future chapters!

C_Mantis

If earth was the first to awaken essence 1. If life also arose on say alpha centauri, two. But if local life never makes enough mana to make essence the answer would be 0. (IE we dont know of other wide spread life happening in other places in our universe. Objectively its likely its out there and more advanced than us but I don't know what we don't know.) Also its entirely the same in PoA, there can exist other life forms outside the local settled star system with them just as clueless as we are IRL. The amount of life to make mana is high so you either need massive natural (sapient) populations or a REALLY long time. Could and should there be multiple distinct civilizations in each real space universe? Probably, but that's not really the genre I want to explore which is why I don't have universes teaming with life as they probably should. 'I was picturing a system where there might be a few or even a dozen per galaxy.' I currently operate from our current understanding of whats out there not our mathematical speculation just cause I don't want to deal with in universe stuff, I wanted to link everything together with Chaotic Space not Real Space. That said if someone went out and traveled through real space and spread essence/mana to every star system in a galaxy you could awaken the entire cluster and have X number of additional 'nodes' in chaotic space all stemming from that one real space universe. I think I answered your question if not let me know and ill try to do so again. There is chaos that goes on in my mind that im not sure makes sense so its good to be asked and called out on it.

Jsar

There's only one part of Alex's comment I thought was wrong, so If you don't mind I'll ask for a clarification here since you've said it's correct. Let's use our reality as an example. How many 'worlds' would be in an expanse as big as our observable universe? How many in the Andromeda or Milky way galaxies? Just one? I was picturing a system where there might be a few or even a dozen per galaxy.

C_Mantis

Alex is 100% correct in his comment. If we need a refresher in story or it needs to be better clarified I can do so but I don't have a better way to explain it without using universe which I feel I'm using correctly.

C_Mantis

fixed ty

noah radencic

No each world exists in its own full universe but you have to leave the solar system to enter chaotic space but their is a full galaxy existing

Andromeda Adams

Ooo… here comes the BOOM! Fight, fight.. this should be fun! Also that world sounds pretty awesome! Tyftc!

Trevor Mergen

Thanks!

Given you can make an orbital ring in the first place, it's pretty easy to keep the gravitational effect of an orbital ring on the planet pretty minimal and totally static. If it's equatorial ring with decent mass balance around the ring and isn't tumbling around the planet, it would cause an effectively static decrease net gravity near the equator and increase net gravity near the poles (with a smooth gradient in between that would shift the effective down direction), which is actually pretty similar to the effect of equatorial bulging caused by planetary rotation, and wouldn't have any real tidal element. Even the static element would probably be fairly small. Assuming materials of roughly similar density as the planet, the actual effect size would be highly dependent on the distance of the ring (mean orbital radius), thickness of the ring (in the sense of the distance between the close-edge orbital radius and the outer-edge orbital radius), width (in the sense of the distance covered in the planetary north-south axis), and the inner orbital radius. In order to have a really significant impact, the ring would need to be close and very deep (many miles), somewhat like a denser version of the layout we see for natural orbital rings around real planets in our system. However, going deep doesn't particularly useful compared to going wide, so the "natural" growth pattern would probably tend in another direction well before the ring got deep enough to have a really major gravitational impact. What's gets really interesting here is that if you build toward a cage structure rather than a just a wide ring (and proceed towards a full shell configuration from there), the structure would actually be expected to have peak gravitational influence on the planet around when it first reaches a very coarse cage configuration, then the gravitational impact would start declining as it goes towards a shell configuration (particularly if that further growth favors a "finer" cage structure first). Per the aptly named shell theorem, the gravitational impact would actually fall back to nothing if it reached the point of being a uniform shell around the planet.

CringeWorthyStudios

That only applies to a geostationary ring. Or, well, only *significantly* applies. If the ring rotates at a different speed and direction to the planet it’s less of a big deal.

Alex

Okay: here's my take on this (and I'm not Mantis so I could be wrong) but as a general rule each of the 'worlds' in the story exist within their own distinct universe. As such, the Realm is a multiverse, with chaotic space being the spatial dimension that all the universes float around in, as well as the means by which cultivators can travel between universes (along with other more esoteric means, like Talents, or the Republic's in-between). The term 'world' gets used because star systems with an essence core show up in chaotic space as a glimmering point of light. As such, the inhabited star system is the central point of reference for a universe, as well as the point of ingress and egress from the universe's realspace into chaotic space. Cultivators generally don't care about the realspace universe outside of the Tiered star system because there's no essence in that region of space - hence they just talk about a universe's 'world' (i.e its Tiered star system) because they don't consider the rest of the universe to be of interest. Where this gets a little bit confusing is that a realspace universe can have more than one 'world' in it. If multiple Tiered star systems exist within the same universe then each of those star systems will show up as a different 'world' in chaotic space, even though they exist in the same realspace universe. Because chaotic space has completely different spatial properties than realspace, there's absolutely no guarantee that two star systems from the same universe will be anywhere near each other in chaotic space - they can be wildly far apart in chaotic space, even if they're within teleportation distance of each other within their universe. This is the principle that realspace crossings use - you can travel a (relatively) short distance in realspace, and at the same time travel an immense distance through chaotic space, which allows for faster transport across the Great Powers. Just to reiterate, each of the worlds ARE actual universes. You CANNOT travel between worlds by flying through realspace, because the worlds DO NOT exist in the same universe as each other. You have to go through chaotic space, (or the Republic's in-between, or some other Talent travel path) to traverse the worlds because they're in entirely different dimensions from each other. There are some rare cases where two worlds will be in the same realspace universe but these cases are the exception to the rule, and they're very rare (I think there's something like 4 known realspace crossings in the Empire? given the Empire is made up of millions of worlds, that gives you a sense for how incredibly rare it is for two worlds to actually be in the same universe).

Jsar

As I understand it, each world creates a real space bubble that is their zone that gets called a universe. Nothing I recall indicates that zone extends much beyond a solar system, but that's not really relevant. These exist inside actual universes and might even be close enough to each other that it's faster to fly over NASA style than use chaotic space. As described, they aren't universes, they are just essence zones. They aren't closed systems or one essence world per universe.

Adam Andersson

How do you mean? Worlds that are neighbors in chaotic space are located in different realspace universes, with realspace travel between systems being impractical. I don't really see how the world has been missused, am I missing an odd wording somewhere in this chapter?

Etoyrt

Isn't it because it is more than just the local space? There is a large expanse of stars and galaxies in the same place where the world is, but the world has tier and was found via chaos. Are you saying you do not like it because these spaces are not singular whole realities encompassing everything? Many people speak of different sorts of multiversity in fiction so it does not seem that odd to me.

tem

Minor grammar error: The remaining 30%… Remaining means everything left, which would be 40%. Especially since its followed by: The final 10%… Remaining and final mean the same thing here. By using final after it means that 30% wasnt the remaining. It’s a device that can only be used once contextually.

Jsar

Can I just say I detest the way the word Universe is misused and redefined in this series. It's like nails on a chalkboard every time I see it. There has to be a better way to describe the local space of an essence world.

Sean Shivers

I can see a dyson sphere for aspects

Tommy

Thanks for the chapter. Time for some sect face slapping Matt can deliver the “you are courting death!” Line with impunity haha

James Faulkner

Tftc!

Tommy

That’s exactly what I thought! Get a sample of the marble and then create a rift based on the marble. Just farm marble golems or something for the stuff!

Jason Hardman

TYFTC! Minor fix: A full sixty percent of the planet would be whole uninhabitable to anyone under Tier 15. -> wholly uninhabitable Also, as another commenter mentioned, the opening paragraph has a repetition around watching chaotic space.

Havokk

I love the description of the world and where they pan to anchor the floating island sound amazing. Gotta say though the series of iron mountains with constant lightning storms and on a fire aspected planet..... yeah we all know where Leon and Mara are building a summer home, that is if they dont just steal that area for their collection lol

Kuniku778

I have been looking forward to seeing the sect planets.

Charlottef

"Would a moon change the local tidal stresses too much and threaten to de-aspect the world? Probably not, but it could be a reason to go with the orbital ring.". The orbital ring would change the tides too. It would not cause them to cycle like a moon, as I assume the ring has even mass all the way around and is not charging position relative to the planet. But the mass of the ring would be huge and cause the water to pull more towards the ring's orbit. This would increase water levels below the ring. The tides on a planet without natural satellites like moons or debris rings would have weak tides already, as only the sun's gravity is there to create them. Good chapter though. Thanks

JauPim

Moons built into an orbital ring seem like the obvious solution. You can have housing and business on the ring and devote the moons solely to rifts. Connect the moons and the ring with space elevators at the poles for mortals to travel through and you're done.

Wheels42

Yeah, HDYWTDT is the big one

John Smith

“How do you want to do this” is a Critical Role tag line

Eric Alex

That first paragraph repeats itself about watching chaotic space

MikeL

I was expecting araM to appear luxuriating in a lava flow.

MikeL

So are they fighting the sect leaders and some underlings, or a full battle royal. Them vs. everyone?

C_Mantis

Not intentionally. What do you think is the reference?

Wheels42

Is that a Critical Role reference at the end? 🤔

C_Mantis

Yes ty

C_Mantis

Yeah this is their personal planet

Alex

That's a good point. If a Blood moon in its blood moon phase doesn't do something interesting I'll be disappointed now.

Thomas Todd

It might be a rift drop that only appears on that planet or the result of a ruin that formed in a strange way which means that it's the only source of the material

Abriel Blauer

"and the planet released spores" Do you mean "and the plants released spores"

Samuel Britt

I'm so ready for this fight

JoshCalmick

Oooooh what a cliffhanger! Great chapter, thanks Mantis!

Xarow

Nice chapter!

Bob Bryan

I wonder how often the blood moon will be a blood moon?

nolan saylor

Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae! I do wonder about the odd thrones. Though my first question was how resources sourced from planets work as opposed to renewable rift resources. Is there some way of growing more marble? Maybe creating marble as a base and the old marble incorporates it? -The thrones themselves are also fun to contemplate, but Matt is doing that for me. -Is the marble only active when mana is run through it or is it the first mana that is run through it keeps the appearance. -What would happen if void mana was run through it? And does it work with low tier mana? Once Matt is revealed he probably can delve a new rift any time he wants. So this is a planet they will rule, not merely have someone else rule for them? All the steam and various types of smoke in the atmosphere must make for some uniquely gorgeous sunsets. -what other odd parts of planets may be thought of as mundane. Imagine an aurora planet, the aura strong enough to be seen during the day. Would it cause the land beneath it to be bathed in colors? Or would the fact that it is an aurora planet already give it crazy colors. How would it all interact with a sunset. I like the idea of various burning scents being in the air. I know it is for simplicity's sake, but I love the idea of more alien life than trees. Sure they absorb heat instead of sun, but they are still trees. I'm thinking the underwater magma vents in the ocean, the odd life around them. On that note the oceans must be oddly teaming with life. Or is there some oddity with the water as oxygen is common to be used for fuel, but some interactions may give out deadly gasses, for earth fish. -There are oddly colored flames, could've also had some weird leafed trees. I do enjoy the more mundane creatures with mana. With the lightning ants failing to get the lizard, can their numbers eventually cause the lizard to run out of mana and lose? Fish get a pass for still being fish... as fish is such a widely used term on Earth where anything in the water with vaguely the right shape and lungs is called a fish. The Polar ice caps are definitely worthy of investigation and enjoyment. I wonder how fire ice works in various temperatures of drinks. Oh yes, Aster will have such fun reactions to this place. Carmen will sadly take a while to tier up. She will also be fun to see, but mostly to see a mirrored reaction to Aster. If they become a couple I vote they get a house here. How interesting would a non-fire rift be in a location like a volcano. Probably not a good idea to have the essence be diluted though. I wonder if they would be more expensive to cycle as the essence needs to convert. How well can a rift be affected by the environment, and more specifically what counts as environment? A sword is an item, and can end up absorbed by the rift, but at what size is a sword part of the environment? Or does it need to be melded into the environment? What if it is a wooden sword that is part of a tree? What if only part of a meteor or mine is made into a sword, while still connected. What about a sword in a stone? Or anvil, in case anyone is being a nerd for the myth. -is a natural treasure that has not yet been removed part of the environment or an item to be absorbed? -Does a natural treasure give better results if it is not removed from where it originated? I am curious what is the biggest whirlpool in the GP? And such things like do people surf on it, or hang glide in hurricanes? 'keep him in the loop about the ring.' So Mantis and Matt also enjoy the idea of other aspected planets. Hopefully Matt knows how to do so and isn't merely hoping it is feasible like so many readers. -I hope Matt can make good on his birthday gift ideas. I am actually a bit surprised that the Sect leaders on this planet were so weak for their tier. It is a rare planet. Maybe the stronger people left or are on high tier planets instead of simply a fitting element planet. How does the Sects feel about sects joining other GPs and taking any style of Sect technique with them? The polished part that the Sects pride themselves on? I am curious as to how much is appearance. The tattoos have no practical reason. The dancers seem mostly for appearance. Curious about the grafting, a lot of little bits of curiosity, but not enough knowledge to ask good questions.
