Question can the ingots be merged with blood iron? If so it could be able to be reproduced constantly.

Jonathan Campbell

His guild is already begun working on attempting to find a way to make various kinds of bespoke rifts starting with the group from the Guilds and one or two of the Knightly Orders. That was mentioned to be starting during and subsequent to the party for Aunt Helen finally piecing her Concept back together thanks to Aster and Allie remembering and fetching her respectively for when that secret society dude was going to ascend.

KnightRider007

Zach creating Freeform spells… then Aster taking one look at it, and creating a better copy where she can pass Concentration off to one of her familiars I mean, golems. We don’t get enough moments of Aster Awesome 😄

KnightRider007

I’d assume so - they’re growth items that aren’t sub-optimally taking up a critical equipment slot like Matt’s sword was. MAL still use the rings they got at Tier 4, so I don’t see why L&S shouldn’t still have their book and cloak with them. Heck, Monarch Harper still uses Lyre, their sentient mask.

Julie Smith

Now there's a significant drop. And it's only their first time through. Go through with the Fire aspect as well. Matt will have some surprises for his opponents, come the Real War(TM).

C_Mantis

There are things in that nature planned but no real ETA on them at the moment.

Hut

Been rereading the story are there any plans for side story's for the next generation of ascenders and or elites? and or how the restrictions on the path have impacted it and those climbing it? It could be interesting to see how the new skills have impacted the process as well.

C_Mantis

because math is hard, fixed.

Dillon lay

I wonder if mat is going to do something really crazy like make a rift for the knights with their natural treasure that has aura for the type of domain they would like. Not sure if such an item would even work in this universe or if I’m going too far.

C_Mantis

I fixed the first but which given do you think isnt right? Happy to edit but they all sound right to my ear

C_Mantis

Ok ive been thinking how to reply without any spoilers or anti spoilers. Let me just say I don't like the trope you are talking about, weapons just losing identity because of magic, any more than I think you do.

AirSak2000

How is 20 million mana per second around 25% of Matt's mana regeneration? I thought at Tier 27 he has around 160 million mps?

Moaz Khan

Thanks for the chapter. Respectfully, I don't think making the sword heavier is a good idea. One of the great things about this series is the touch of realism that comes with with the weapon system. Yes, we have magical armor penetration and small swords beating spears, but there is still acknowledgement of how these martial weapons function, and longswords are primarily dexterity weapons that don't rely on strength so much as skill/structure. I feel like making the weapon heavier would would take away a some of that weapon realism. Maybe using a magically condusive materials or something that harkens back to Matt's talisman skills

Sean C Jackson

Maybe.

TwoMoreYears

Really great chapter once again. Not for sure if this is going to be the anchor for his aspect but it definitely has a good feel about it. It’s just fun whenever Matt gets the super rare item from the rift. Also a nice way of showing wun in action. This seems closer to a 1 in a trillion shot than a billion if the rifts where it’s a known reward are 1 in a billion. Makes sense how he became an ascender despite the bad luck he can also cause. Ascender level talents are strong enough to overcome those problems, especially with the advantages he gets being this level.

Sean C Jackson

Could be, I think his Aspects Image being a Nuetron star might be cool.

Gale Emm

Soooooo, Matt just found his Aspect's Anchor right? Or at least what he'll use as material for it.

JJB4345_80_815

Thank you for the chappy! Friendly possible edits: Quote: but Matt didn’t let phase him, throwing his Concept and [Telekinesis] into the move to send the ogre flying. /Quote (This is from a single sentence paragraph. It was a long sentence so I chopped off the front.) let phase him ==> let it phase him Quote: In practice, that meant even a star on the brink of death given even a single unit of essence would either die and vent its essence or reach Tier 15. /Quote given ==> giving (I could be wrong. Tensing is a bit tricky in English - replaying that Big Bang Theory episode discussing Back to the Future in my mind and I ain't no genius neither).

-> Empire. Lila Worldwalker - The Roaring Sandstorm. Status: Tier 45, retired. An egg-born Sand Dragon, her Human has a Talent that gave her full sapience from the moment she hatched. Her abilities are mostly sand-based, but there's hints about her having time-related powers too (perhaps based on the idea of sand in an hourglass). Aiden al'Aegir - Duke Waters. Status: Tier 32, retired by buyout. Water mage, Domain prodigy, and one of the few people in recorded history to have created an Authority before Ascending - he is simultaneously the greatest Domain expert and worst Domain teacher in known reality. Aiden is - BY FAR - the strongest fighter (relative to his Tier) in the current setting. Zack Varon - Light. Status: Tier 27, retired by buyout. Precision mage that specializes in Arcane magic. His Talents allow him to change the element of any spell that isn't Void aspected, which he utilizes to draw out the full potential of every unit of mana. Allison Spein - Shadow. Status: Tier 27, retired by buyout. Teleporting, space manipulating assassin. Currently holds the record for the fastest buyout in history due to her ability to [Teleport] to any location she's familiar with. Famously used her [Teleport] ability in a lightning operation that would later be known as The Day of The Long Shadow - the deadliest day for military elites in the Great Power era. Matthew Moore nee Alexander - The Indomitable Titan. Status: Tier 27, active. Likes to throw mana at his problems until they go away. Has previously been accused of having a style based on throwing around mana by the bucketful in the hope that he'll accidentally splash his target. Elizabeth Moore - The Immortal Legion. Status: Tier 27, active. Blood magic specialist - her Tier 25 Talent allows her to make full duplicates with the [Blood Clone] spell, turning her into a one-woman army. To kill her you need to destroy every single drop of Blood within a certain radius of her center of mass - and if you manage that she'll just revive with her Phoenix Bloodline, making her possibly the hardest person to kill relative to her Tier in the entire Realm. Since evolving her Bloodline element from Fire to Ichor she's also become virtually immune to fire and lightning damage, as well as most blood-inhibiting effects. Aster Alexander - The Ineffable Wraith. Status: Tier 27, active. Ice elemantalist, illusionist, and support magic specialist - her ability to debuff her enemies, buff her allies, and capture high priority targets in her spirit space makes her the real unsung hero of the Empire's Ascenders. -> Guilds. Olivier - One Step Behind. Status: Tier 41, retired. Fastest speedster in the Realm. On top being the fastest man alive, he also has the ability to discern the powersets of others with a glance - he's one of the few people outside of the Empire that knows what Matt's Talents are. -> Clans. Wun Miloan - Goldenrod. Status: Tier 40 (approximately), retired. His Talents make unlikely events (both good and bad) far more likely to occur; his presence unleashes chaos on the battlefield. He is the obligatory Sun Wukong reference of this shonen story, so he also has some vague, unspecified Monkey Bloodline, and he fights with a golden staff (literally his Golden Rod). Given he named himself after his weapon, it's likely that it's a powerful growth item that got the Minkalla treatment - may have the power to grow and shrink if it's a 1:1 copy of Sun Wukong's staff. Ellen/Jack - Mastermind. Status: Tier 35, active. She has a universal (albeit very weak) innate understanding Talent. Through millenia of effort she's pushed her Talent to the point where she can be a true master of everything. Fights with a sword and board, typically dismantles her enemies by rapidly learning all the flaws in their fighting styles. Moe/Lug - Greathammer. Status: Tier 35, active. Bloodline Dwarf, and undisputed strongest person in the Realm for his Tier. He hits hard. REALLY hard. Current speculation is that his Talents allow him to control what gets damaged by his physical attacks and stack strength boosts without interference. Probably the most simplistic of all the current crop of Ascenders, he just likes to hit things until they break. Krodag/Bottle - Lifegiver. Status: Tier 35, active. Support mage. Presumed Bloodline Dwarf, although official Bloodline status remains unconfirmed. Based on the fact that he always shouts spell names, he probably has a Talent that makes his spells better when he says what they are when they're cast. He may be required to say the name of a spell to cast it, because he always does it, even when it’s wildly impractical (like after he’s had his face rearranged by his Tier 45 handler Ugnud for doing something unspeakably stupid). Brian/Boney - Deadlord. Status: Tier 35, active. Necromancer that can control undead across any distance. He typically keeps his real body near the Clan's Tier 50, which makes him completely unkillable. He's responsible for maintaining the Ascender group chat by routing the signal through a Realm-spanning network of undead. Honorable Mention: True Inheritor Coldforge. Status: retired. Ascender-class combatant that didn't complete the Path. Mentioned by name in Chapter 270, otherwise unknown. Inheritors are dwarves who Awaken by bonding with Artifacts - special growth items of immense quality and power created by one of the earliest progenitors of the Dwarf race; this results in Inheritors having Talent sets (and usually Domains) that are specifically tailored to their Artifact. -> Corporations. Maxine Teslovaka - Cosmind. Status: Tier 39, retired by buyout. Rapier wielding duelist and best mind mage in the Realm. She has the ability to read people's minds and facial expressions with unerring accuracy, to the extent that Manny had to bribe her to overlook the secret of Matt’s Talents. She's also known to have a Talent that lets her predict the future, which she's used to pull off stunts like wiping out enemy armadas at the moment they entered realspace with a spell barrage she cast months in advance. During her time in the war Tiers she overextended into Empire space, leading to her being captured and ransomed by Lila. She refused a buyout for several Tiers because of all the shit she got for it, and she’s still salty about it. Honorable Mention: Pearlescent Paladin Taien. Status: retired. Ascender-class combatant that didn't complete the Path. Mentioned by name in Chapter 270, otherwise unknown. Paladins are elites that brave the depths of Minkalla to turn mastercrafted suits of power armor into growth items; Pearlescent Paladins are the chosen few that get a full growth-item run. -> Sects. Jai Sien - The Lady of ill Dreams. Status: Tier 41 (approximately), retired. Dream mage with a Nightmare Bloodline. Despite being a sectie, she's actually pretty chill - unless her twin sons Jai Meng and Jai Xilu are involved. She's a famously doting and overprotective mother, and she's been known to kill people for being too closely associated with someone that unleashed killing intent in the same room as her kids (although it's unclear the extent to which this incident has been exaggerated). At present, the largest betting pool in the group chat is about the identity of Meng and Xilu's father. Andes Charl - Master of All. Status: missing - presumed dead. Talent thief, renowned asshole, and serial rapist. Killed by Cosmind after a failed attempt to seduce her and steal her Talents. Had his body brought back in six pieces after being VERY thoroughly executed. Honorable Mention: Yun Me - the Unyielding Anvil. Status: Tier 35, active. Ascender-class combatant that didn't complete the Path. She's been fighting in the Tier 35 bracket for the last million years. Universally described by the True Ascenders as being one of the most boring people alive because of her even temperament and simplistic fighting style. Melee fighter that uses a shield and spear, she's renowned for being one of the tankiest cultivators around - she reportedly survived a full-power blow from Moe at one point, and Aiden has said that there's no way he'd be able to kill her. -> Monster Collective. Eclavorn. Status: Tier 41, retired. Elder Dragon, and one of the few Rank 3 beasts in the Realm. Originally completed the Path in the Federation before the War of the Monsters and rise of the Monster Collective. Defected to the Monster Collective during the war, which many speculate is the reason the Federation broke the war rules by pushing battles beyond the Tier 35 limit all the way to Tier 43. Since Charl's death he's been promoted to designated asshole of the Ascender group chat. Gideon. Status: Tier 41, retired. Assumed to be Eclavorn's Human; fighting style unknown, although he doesn't mind if you call him Eclavorn's Rider, suggesting a possible knight/cavalry powerset. He's far less of an asshole than Eclavorn. -> Republic. Maya Embers - The Grand Shaper. Status: Tier 35, active. Has reality manipulation abilities which allow her to set rules in a designated area that everyone has to follow - including herself. Her fighting style has been described as doing battle with a lawyer, but more fun. Currently the designated punching bag of the group chat after getting her ass handed to her by Aiden at the battle of the Citadel despite having an overwhelming Tier and numerical advantage. Honorable Mention: Gladiator Oracle. Status: Ascended. Oracle had some power that let her cheat death. When she showed up alive after being declared dead for the thirty-fourth time, it became policy that all Ascender-class combatants were to be officially designated as 'Missing, Presumed Dead' in the event that they received fatal damage - no matter how dead they appeared to be. -> Federation. Currently, None. Honorable Mention: Slayer Daedalus. Status: missing - presumed dead. Daedalus was a Federation Slayer around a million years ago. He killed a fellow Ascender from the Ascendancy of the Sun in fair combat, which led to his capture and execution by the Ascendancy's Tier 50. Every other Great Power of the day banded together to crush the Ascendancy for the transgression, leading to them being cast down and replaced by The Corporations. The reparations given to the Federation for Daedalus' execution let them take the top spot in the Great Powers until the War of the Monsters knocked them all the way down to the bottom of the table roughly 30,000 years ago. Daedalus is Ascender Jesus - his (unwilling) sacrifice has made it so that NOBODY is willing to break the war rules to take out an Ascender. Fighting style unknown, although he is famous for inventing an esoteric enchanting methodology that utilized a runic system with a mind of its own. -> Glorious Everlasting Kingdom of Prosperity. Damien Duskblade - The First Ascender. Status: Ascended. A disgraced noble from the region of the Glorious Everlasting Kingdom that would become The Sects after The Shattering, Damien defied the odds by reaching Tier 25 in less than 200 years with no help whatsoever - no managers, no rift priority, no tax breaks, nothing. His achievement became the template for every Path program across the Great Powers, and the international treaties dictating the rules and standards for declaring someone an Ascender are called the Duskblade Accords in his honor. Nobody knows what his powers were; some believe that he could use the Talents of anyone he killed. Some say that he became stronger every time his sword drew blood. The only thing anyone actually remembers about his fighting style is that he wielded shadows and a sword, and he was completely invincible.

Trey

small question but remember how zach and allie had a “the hills have eyes” floor in their minkalla run? are they still using those? that’s the floor that gives sentience to zach’s spellbook right? just curious if those sentient items are still around and being used

C_Mantis

Its one of the few floors they had in common

Walter Honeycutt

Wait, Zack and Allie had Eternal Darkness in their minkala too?

Taddeo

Does anybody have a list with all the still living ascender level people (from all Great Powers) and what their main thing is (for example Matt has unlimited Mana etc.)

Bob Bryan

Honestly adding that box of boxes to his house would probably be a great idea as it would give them alot of boxes for storage.

C_Mantis

Fixed ty

Kbzzy

I was thinking that might be the reason. It didn’t sound like she was involved in the group spars

HN

Thanks for the chapter! Editing suggestion: but Matt didn’t let that phase him -> faze

James Faulkner

This is gonna make such a fucking cool sword lol

C_Mantis

I havent mentioned it in a while but Matt was last stated to be higher than a melee cultivator would normally be at the same Tier.

DisgruntleFairy

I wonder if this is how they meet JR. Because you are going to need a real expert to make his sword compatible with that.

Benjamin Warlick

Hmm. I’d figured the aspect would go with wormholes, being associated with both black and white holes, extra utility, and a way to learn from Ally. Could still end up that way, not sure if just a neutron star is big enough for Mr. Titan. The truth about self determination could go either way, thematically about controlling his own mass vs position.

Nate Slattery

Great to find Matt’s aspect anchor

Tom C

And maybe that person advanced, and then they advanced beyond the upper realm. Then they built minkalla and sent it down a couple of realms to help along the next person who got the mana-generator talent thing

Lidja

Matt does need an Anchor for his Aspect, maybe they can make something out of it.

Brandon Cooley

Upon re reading the series again what are there mana concentrations currently?

Alex

Given the way it's resonating with his Domain he might make it into an Anchor. Maybe he'll get his sword to eat the ingot then turn his sword into his Aspect's Anchor.

Alex

Given how incomprehensibly old and vast the Realm is, I think the law of truly large numbers dictates that anything with a non-zero chance of happening must have happened at some point in the past. With that in mind, I believe that a person with Talents like Matt's must have already existed. My headcanon is that "a suspicious amount of Tiered stellar bodies in a given area of real space" is a remnant of them going around Tiering things up with their mana.

David Bean

Dang, now that is a cool rift reward.

William Johnson

Heavy metal, rock on!

WhiteRabbit

He's going to need to be ridiculously cranked up just to pick up that sword

Matt H

I can imagine how running around and spending time with 4 different sets of Ascenders could make Susanne feel a bit disappointed in herself and depressed.

Aiden Bishop

Thanks for the chapter

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter

nolan saylor

Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae! Oh, paired rifts?! That has some fun potential for shenanigans. -I doubt where my mind went is the actual intention, but it would be interesting to have paired rifts for travel. Using a connecting pair of rifts as an alternative to real space crossings. Maybe high leveled rifts and so somewhat exclusive for higher tiers if it needs to be cleared. Maybe some confusion if both entrances activate the same 15 minute instancing. I do love fun sibling relations. Possession could be a fun way of powering up a monster akin to Synoid and Crastor, double the number of monsters in a single body. Twice as much mana and such. Maybe a hive mind boss monster composed of loads of spirits in a single physical space. Maybe weak to shattering said space but deadly for non-space experts. Some fun world-building about general styles of monsters. Not sure if it is actual pseudo-biology or more appearance/ability based morphology. Do monsters with similar abilities always have the similar weaknesses? That is a jump in tier power, do later levels of monsters equal T31? Zach straight up creating freeform spells. Fun. The arena being part of the challenge is fun. Sorta a boss with a mech. No, let the boss transform! It's part of the fun. neutronium - an actual material... albeit theoretical. -I do like the idea of magic making unstable elements stable. I'm still intrigued by what properties uranium, and such, would have if not deadly. Lol, not being able to get the ridiculously expensive loot sounds hilariously terrible. I wonder if there is a magical version of this. Something that is magically unstable or intangible and none of the party can grasp it. Or maybe something just genuinely unstable and so if the party can't get it stabilized they have to leave or be in the blast zone. I do love magical theories. With added confusion there can't be readers being pissed, as it is not an established fact. They are all stupidly rich and carefree, but still nice to see people staying friends in the face of opportunity. Betrayal is unpleasant, even merely in stories.
