A skill shard is single use, a skill orb can be used by multiple people. Add in the debatable bonus of a skill orb able to be modified outside the spirit so others can get the modifications without spending the time themselves. -though of note is that it is unclear how many times a skill orb can be used, theoretically maybe only once, but up to thousands of times.

Julie Smith

Excitement! A skill orb! How does an orb differ from a shard? I don't recall. I love that they had a mystery to solve to find the big reward. I'm also glad that we saw a serious side to Allie. That makes her a more well-rounded character.

wanderer117

The rift was still reading as strange / anomalous. It may not have destabilized even when it ranked up.

Rodney

This exploration arc makes me look forward to the first time they all go into a rift that will take hundreds of years subjectively for them to complete

C_Mantis

if you can point out what issues trip you up I can edit but it seems clear to me as I did write it.

Apep

I wonder where they endet up in terms of chaotic space after this real-space crossing. Maybe even deeper into the break?

eloi Boco

Bruh , couldn’t have told us what the skill name was or what it did before ending the chapter 😭

Jordan O'Hare

The whole revelation of Allie realising it wasn't the true prize was a little hard to follow. The whole "want to bet there were 3 life pods" thought suddenly letting them leap to the conclusion that 2 of them were distractions was quite a reach. I also didn't get how that linked into the 3 worlds being seeded either (or that they had 3 hours left, and this being the third planet seeded, there were a lot of 3s). All in all I think that part could be cleared up.

Jordan O'Hare

"Matt copied the files and gave it to his [AI] to analyze, throwing his entire mana generation into the spell" shouldn't it be skill?

Xarow

Fantastic chapter! This had such a different feel to usual. A mystery and archeology with an unknown originating culture! Pre the oldest known civilisation maybe? I was unsure if it was going to give a hint to the origin worlds where man first came from in this cosmere.

Epsilon

Especially since an *Ascender* "thinking about my mana in a way too limited way before this" seems like a big deal. Especially Matt, since he has not been limited about his manna *at all*.

Robbie

This was one of those chapters that had me speed reading and trying to take it all in at once. Love this type of world building.

Kevintopia

I agree that the source of the skill orb seems much more valuable than the orb itself. I read it as being a rift because he used the term delving but I went back after you called it a realm. He says “delving a strange area” which is ambiguous. Presumably a rift would have tiered up over time and would have changed. The other realm they found in this system was so low tier that them entering it would destroy it. Either way, they probably can’t create their own reward.

Alex

Given Tier 15s were extraordinary for the civilization in question, probably Tier 14, maybe Tier 20.

Kuniku778

What teir?

Matt H

I'm curious, why do you feel the need to post a placeholder comment that you edit later rather than just posting your "true" comment when it's ready?

Tabais

Great chapter as always

Diarmadhi

im curious about what matt's insight on his mana was.

MinE

its kinda a meme that he is still alive but in hiding, but he is canonically dead.

A Flashy BR

Tyftc Skill orb hell yeah I hope it's cool

Gaby Tole

What about the Sect guy from Minkalla? The one who had a girlfriend in the illusion who died. Han De was an interesting character. He believed in being kind to those below him. I wonder if we'll see him at Tier 35.

Disclancer

I'm not sure I can handle this cliff guys! I need to know what's in that skill orb!

WindGunner

Yes, it's called a typo

The El Bandito

A few too many history lessons lately. The constant navel-gazing really slows the pacing down.

Austin

Imagine what the emperor could do with it with Allie's talent

Flopmind

This skill orb is a great trade/wager item for when they get back. They don't even have to bet the whole thing, just a single output of the skill would be worthwhile, if I'm understanding the usefulness of the skill properly.

Pannath

Didn't take them that long go do a realspace jaunt of a few lightyears. I imagine if people set up portal relay stations which runic formations between star systems, it would be easier. I wonder if Matt will consider that from his own Duchy. The Empire is under restrictions for expansion through chaotic space... they have no such real space restrictions after a war. Matt could portal out a few star systems away, build consistent relays so it's not so difficult for others who aren't him to move between worlds. Then use his mana to tier up some worlds. People wouldn't see what he's doing a few light years away... even doing it over the course of a few hundred or thousand years. Could be useful. Personally I'd use magical Von Neumann probes to seed a galaxy.

Jason Hardman

TYFTC! Spotted a typo: saw the cost was clear -> saw the coast was clear

Spencer Needler

Can’t wait to see how that orb would interact with Allie and her talent

Ali Sha

The skill is cool and all, but if they could find the realm that let them make a bespoke skill orb, that would be amazing.

Havokk

shouldn't "Allies grin winded." be "Allies grin widened." ??

Cteatus

This chapter is fire, and this arc is shaping up to be fire. The exploration aspect of the early tiers was what got me to bite on the story in the first place, and its such a delight to see it make a reappearance here!

WhiteRabbit

Doesn't this mean that going through chaotic space would be much less dangerous?

Alex

We did get that PoV from Long Zhiyuan in the war arc where he had an existential crisis after he finally figured out that there isn't any special trick to being an Ascender, they're just that good.

CottonMod

The crew must be going crazy. After a casual chat, two ascenders try out a dubious theory that involves mutilating one of their spirits and spending 100s of millions of mana. Then, they actually succeed, teleporting everyone across years of distance. All that based on a hunch. Some characters see ascenders as war gods, some as saviors and idols, and some as mortal enemies. Now we need a PoV chapter for this type of complete madness. I can imagine a group chat with all "ascender-affiliates," where people can went and bond over how it feels to be crew, friends, and guild-mates with semi-oblivious idiots who regularly achieve the impossible.

Alex

If we assume that this skill is similar to Allie's recall ability - i.e it lets a person return to any predefined point from anywhere (which is NOT a given, it could also be a skill that allowed a person to KNOW the direction of a predefined point from anywhere) - then the most likely upgrade path is to give the skill more recall points.

Tom C

This is so cool. TFTC!

Tom C

A strange area must be a rift right? What if they can find the rift. But by now it’s probably overflowed into a ruin? Idk. All very interesting yeah!

Oblivion

Uhhhhh. Does “always find home” apply to chaotic space? I assume it does. Who says you can’t modify home to mean waypoints or multiple homes. They may have just unlocked permanent non-Allie non-Seeker chaotic space navigation. If they can find a place in chaotic space for Matt to sprint tier up or go crazy with mana without risk of discovery before the true war this is an absolute game changer and we know Manny is trying to get Allie out without detection to create a waypoint.

Immutably Empty

Too bad the planet & rift where the reward was originally obtained has probably tiered up since that time, so they can't have the rift make more similar rewards. But Allie should definitely leave a way point so they can come back later.

Alex

"The person had exceptional luck in delving a strange area that let them design a reward after they defeated all of their opponents, monsters and human enemies alike. They asked for a skill that would let them always find home, and were given a skill to do exactly that." This is very interesting - if we assume that this 'strange area' really let the person design a custom skill, it begs the question of whether this skill is truly unique, or just a specifically cracked variant of a pre-existing skill. This has interesting implications for skill theory: if a person could request any skill they wanted and they ended up getting a cracked skill, it suggests that the Realm has a pre-defined list of skills - kind of like elements on the periodic table - and any skill that can exist must be a variant of one of the skills on that list.

Nathaniel France

A skill orb related to always finding the way back home…. Allie who can teleport…. Matt with infinite mana….. Obviously without knowing exactly what the skill orb does, I can’t get too far ahead of myself, but considering Allie and Matt basically just found a way to “manually” use Portal in an almost cracked fashion, I could potentially see some insane interplay being done dependent on what this orb does. And considering both seekers locked onto it, I can’t help but assume it’s going to be quite good.

Alex

I'm assuming the skill is [Cracked Recall] that lets a person return to a pre-defined location from anywhere - essentially like a lesser version of Allie's Talent that only gives a person one waypoint. What if Manny uses it, sets the location as somewhere in the fourth layer, then uses a skill transference Talent to give the skill to Allie, allowing her to make a waypoint in the fourth layer. EDIT: or, on second thought, he could just use the skill and bring Allie along with him, which would achieve the same result with much less complication. Let this be a lesson on not overthinking things.

Havokk

okay I cant wait to see who if anyone uses the skill orb and what exactly it does with or beyond always being able to find home. And as if anyone needed the point made again... seeing what Matt and Allie did... well Ascenders be scary as fuck in what they pull off

Derze

nice

C_Mantis

Ah shit I forgot will add immediately.

Brad Thomas

Ouch no PDF

Polyist's Apostle

Thanks for the chapter!

Alex

Whos tim?

Alex

Skill orbs were first mentioned back in one of the Minkalla side-chapters when a Corpie crew found a [Steady] orb, then they came up again when Frederic showed up at Fort Lightfoot to give MAL their goodies for completing the Path in the war arc. They're essentially a re-usable skill shard - although they will break after a random number of uses; you might get ten uses out of a skill orb, you might get a million. They also have the property that a person can modify the skill in a skill orb - which isn't super useful for Ascenders, but for Academies and noble families that's one of their biggest draws; they can get their most skilled cultivators to apply sophisticated mods to a skill orb then roll out the modified skill en masse.

Anton Selling

I cant remember them being mentioned before, but I am guessing a endless source of skills 🤔

R. Maxwell Steele

I know this is blasphemy but is anybody else mad that the main story is distracting from the Tim mini story? 😭

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter!

Jordan O'Hare

Thanks

nolan saylor

Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae! Billionaire and collector Matt is sad that the stuff is only fairly interesting and worth mere millions. -I wonder if the planet, and the contents, aren't itself worth loads, but by being here the opportunity for a better treasure will arise. Dang, can't even explore the strange realm. I wonder if any of the Ascenders will get to have the planet brought into their dukedom. I'm darkly amused by the idea of someone trying to essence seed a planet but accidentally ending it. The dinosaurs were meant to be cultivators!! Early era spaceship?! Maybe most of the value is in its history? A seven pronged fork just seems funky. T14 immortals are interesting. I feel like the idea was mentioned before but I don't recall for certain. Having a tier of cultivation named after you seems an interesting legacy. -maybe eventually your name is the same as a number. counting 1,2,3 as Tom, Dick, and Harry. Your T15 immortal super weapon being friends with the nuke of your enemy would cause difficulties. So this is less a spaceship and more the trailer of a spaceship. I'm picturing the travel as more akin to a train along a train track, which fits with the idea that this thing is a trainer more than a train engine. The thought that nobody lived here is interesting... but then why the perfect orbit? Purely luck? Or maybe it was sent here but the person who intended to follow and live here didn't make it. Maybe it was a fallout shelter. Still weird when the planets were all essence seeded. -I see Allie is thinking the same. It would be fun if MAL found, or at least saw in a museum, something like the golden record on Voyager. Something that isn't a spaceship but simply the record of some ancient race declaring they existed. Maybe the species was tracked down and included in a GP, maybe they found their remains like in 'Planet of the Apes.' Ah'Tra the determined sounds like he must have a great movie about him. It's only almost impossible... Now I'm hearing "He's only mostly dead" Dang Ascenders. Super rare skill orb!! Now is it going to be a known skill or a new skill?!
