Michael Ferguson

Or better yet crystal shaping skill. Crafters get skill, right?

Alex

You've got to remember that most of the Tier 50s are greedy psychopaths who'll declare war on each other because they think it's convenient to kill off billions of their own people every few thousand years for resource management reasons. They're not going to think "wow the guy with endless mana is demonstrably generous and altruistic, if we just show a little patience and good will he'll definitely help us of his own volition", they're going to think "wow, that's that most valuable resource to have ever existed. I will make it mine if I have to burn the entire Realm and everyone in it, and if I can't have it then nobody can." Nobody is going to think of Matt as a person when they find out what he's capable of, they'll just see him as a walking gold mine to be claimed by the last person standing.

Michael Ferguson

My favorite part about Matt's big secret is everybody already knows. They can all see he throws around a lot of mana. They just don't know how much more he is going to get. So they are acting like it's not that impressive. But when the truth comes out Matt can point to all the free stuff he already gives out and honestly say "I will help everyone, just don't try to force me."

Michael Ferguson

Skill combination is cool. Feels like consolidating skills is a natural step. I'm pretty happy Matt can teleport now. But he keeps getting more and more skill slots. Why doesn't he have some rune making skills? Do they not exist?

Michael Ferguson

I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit annoyed with the slow levels. And Powers feel like a step backwards. The step 2, resonate your hole body with your power, sounds like a realm aspect or it should make it easier. So I can wait for powers to be figured out. But the Tim stuff, it feels like it should be in a different series. I'm kinda hoping that kid gets refrigerated to motivate Matt to level up faster. So the only horrible thing about leaping to 30 is that one scientist did it in front of Matt. Also Aster and Matt both have been inspired before, it's Lizz's turn.

Michael Ferguson

I just had a horrible idea. If Matt gets an inspiration in chaotic space he will have to choose to tier up to 29 and not double his mana. Or waist the inspiration to tier up 29. But Shadow could teleport Matt back to compress his 29 mana, then he would be at the capital for the inspiration. Matt's tier 30 probably wouldn't tier up the capital, but the soul damage could be bad. And what if the inspiration has other effects at the capital.

Michael Ferguson

Powers and Concepts seem equivalent to me. Stage 1 and Concept, Stage 2 and Intent, Stage 3 and Domane, line them up and you get stage 4 and realm aspect.

Michael Ferguson

I want to see Matt use essence in an attack like Rah. He should ignore Water's advice and use will in the hole power structure.

Michael Ferguson

A concept skill would be amazing if he can share it.

Michael Ferguson

Is Tim making tier 0 skills? Can Matt's guild publish those skills? How is the bespoke rift market doing with Matt gone?

MinE

Unlikely mostly because Tim is actually a good person. Also that would be an unsatisfying twist. P.S. I get with a specific Talent set it should be theoretically possible, especially after three personality overwrites, but it seems a bit of a stretch.

Paladin Nick

I think people are comparing apples to oranges when they talk about Duke Waters. His whole kit is about fighting up tiers his authority, aspect, domain etc are all about the fighting of greater and greater foes. Matt and all of his same tier ascenders are growing into their powers, could they beat up a tier 30 no problem yes. However in every fight they are all trying to grow their respective powers sets, trying to find their truths and pushing what they are capable of. Once they get wha they are working on will they start to stop the non elites that they face in my opinion without a doubt. From a narrative point of view I get them having limits not just from the sake of making it interesting but from their own perspective of growing. They learned huge amounts from the clans, and the guilds. It will take them a while to adjust their fighting styles let alone figure out how all of them fit together. I have no doubt that before the end of the breach we will see them put some of it together and start stomping out those that challenge them

Rehoboth Okorie

Very out there but what are the chances that Tim is a reincarnation of the master of all?

MinE

At least it should make it easier for him to form his Power and help him with the see yourself as your Domain spatial manipulation/teleportation ability. P.S. His Talent, especially his T3, should help him develop alot of Domain abilities.

Flopmind

Always good to return to our true MC!

Oblivion

I feel like Tim’s concept runs a really high risk of perfectionism to the point of detriment unless shaped well very early on. Honestly similar to Luna’s obsession. Might be time for her to stop pretending to be an untiered cat.

C_Mantis

Fixed

Alex

According to the google doc from the war arc the crack makes it more powerful for the tradeoff of making it more expensive.

C_Mantis

I don't remember that idea but that doesn't mean I didn't say it lol. If anyone else remembers feel free to let me know.

Apiris

I forget - what’s the cracked part of cracked air slide?

Shmigit

Posted this on the last chapter, but looks like it was too late for anyone to see it. Sorry, don't mean to spam either. Bit of a tangential question here. Back during the Path portion of the story when Matt took on the persona of Quill, I thought I remembered there being some meta-conversations in the comments with Mantis talking about Matt using his talisman skills with the second layer of Cracked Phantom Armor. Am I mis-remembering that idea being discussed in the comment sections? If not, did you drop the idea or have you just been leaving it on the back burner all this time? The merger with Archmage's Presence got me thinking about other ways Matt could upgrade Cracked Phantom Armor.

C_Mantis

I am trying lol. It's not perfect by any means but I like to think I handled it fairly well. As for the nerf angle I don't intend to go that route. I hopefully have a interesting answer.

HN

TFTC! Edit suggestion: viscously-barbed -> viciously-barbed

Christopher Roberts

Tim is finally back! The Matt side plot had been going on for too long

Nathaniel France

Fun chapter as always. As someone whose also a writer and has started to reach the point of having a fairly decent sized following, it’s always fun when I have a moment of “huh, why doesn’t the MC do X thing that would clearly be abusable as fuck” only to remind myself “you know exactly why because you’ve had to deal with it yourself: because otherwise their wouldn’t be an interesting story” I do think the scaling problem is actually a really good way to handle the issue of “I generate as much mana a second as a t40 as total” because when paired with the speed theyre constantly progressing, it prevents Matt from “solving” his problem at which point he would raw dog anyone within even a few tiers of him and it wouldn’t be particularly close. If I was the author I’d probably be introducing a maguffin at some point to low-key nerf his mana generation for awhile I.E a “chest of goodies that needs a constant stream of 10 bajillion mana for 100000000 years to unlock” so that I could delay the inevitable “at this point with this much mana he should really be curb stomping everyone” comments. Maybe not in that exact fashion but you have to give props because from a story standpoint Matt is a ticking time bomb that takes skill to write about in a way that doesn’t become glaringly obvious he’s nerfed for plot reasons only (For example, Manny with his sheer abundance of talents should fall into this category but he’s kept out of the main narrative enough that you don’t spend time thinking about it)

C_Mantis

Clones are hard to write lol. Adds a lot of people with the same name and that's confusing. As for Tim I was more adding him to this chapter so people didn't think I had actually forgotten about our academy arc. That said I do have plans for good ole Tim.

James Skinner

Is Tim the final nemesis?

Jordan O'Hare

Doesn't Matt have more mana per second than a T40 has entitly in his pool? A T32 shouldn't be able to handle that, definitely. But at the same time Matt is trying not be discovered, so is not gonna go All Out on such an unimportant fight

nolan saylor

Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae! Not sure I like Tim being the PoV, maybe later I will but I'm just not invested. He is nicely located for any trickle down info on problems in the Duchy. I just think a kid of Unbroken, some other friendly former Pather, or maybe someone in a different GP would be a fun side bit for keeping up with the Realm. So is he getting a ping because he made progress on his Concept or because he made his Concept? If the former it would be fun to see if he can keep some benefits of progress. If the later it would be funny if he did get previous entries, but when his mindset leaves the fitting place he has no knowledge of the concept progress so it deletes itself. Maybe he can see about making progress in the memory erasure chair and see If he keeps the option to gain proficiency in the skill after removing the helmet and forgetting the skill. I wonder if Tim has a paperwork skill? He is zoning out while doing it, though that could be the more typical usage. When he merges CPA with the Archmage skill, is it still cracked skill? What sort of designation is there? It is such a fun problem to have, too many options. Well, it is annoying, but better than not having options. It is fun to theorize when the problems don't affect me. I previously said that without a crew Matt could use his infinite mana without issue. I forgot Rah wasn't in on it. I wonder if the crew wasn't there would he have been brought in on the infinite mana, seeing as he would be the only one holding them back from abusing infinite mana. I wonder if Matt hadn't had to/been able to rely on others. Would he have ended up going more into the domain specialization. Just him having the mental clues of how to improve, he might've had a chance at being another Aiden. (not really likely, but fun to think about.) I want a seeker Ascender. Someone who can go out into the Chaotic storm on their own and find what they want. Find all the interesting stuff. Georgois was somewhat a seeker T50, but not as fun. Wun might work as a seeker Ascender. I am also just contemplating how such an Ascender might work. Liz being able to abuse Matt's mana for pushing through teleportation wards is fun. She's finally being a double princess and throwing money/mana at a problem. I wonder where the Neutronium ingot is? I'm just curious if it is in their duchy. Sure a same tier thief won't be able to steal it, but a higher tier thief would. Just left with Kees, the T44 vice guildmaster. Maybe Mara & Leon were asked to hold it for safekeeping. I do like the naming scheme of dwarves being Irish. Just feels like a good fit for the tropes. I know Matt is the tank, just thinking that he doesn't need to be left to be teamed on. A swap with a Liz clone, that may explode, and he's fine. Maybe it's advantageous, or maybe it's his role and he embodies that. -Though he does like being in the center of the enemies... a "target rich environment" for a guy with mana to spare. Doing more damage than an exploding Liz might. Using the enemy's weapon to create an attack is fun. -Though is she not his blood as well? Did she need to grasp his blood if she was the blood spurting out? I'd forgotten Susanne can make Domain clones. Others may be able to as well. We need more clones in fights.... which I am sure won't be at all confusing to read or write. I wonder if someone embodies a sword, maybe it is their Domain or Talent, if their body would read as a sword with Susanne's eyes. Susanne's domain clones are sorta swords, can she see them? If she has [Sword twin} can she overlay herself for added strength? (I vaguely think she might already be able to overlay herself.)

Pannath

Tim's talent and personality revolve around knowing things, it's likely his concept will be along similar lines. I guess it depends how he wants to do it. Right now it's "everything comes easy". He was smart and everything in school was so easy for him, he never had to study or make good work habits... then he got a talent that reinforced this, he could pay money for shortcuts. Makes me worry for what his concept will could say about him. Even now, he just wants to get to Immortality so he can "do nothing", all the rush will be forever gone, because he'll have all the time in the world.

Joseph Jenkins

Maybe I'm stupid and forgetting something, but I think Matt should be kicking way more butt than he does. Even if he's struggling with massive reductions in efficiency for massive castings of his spells, they should still be huge compared to anything anyone near his tier should be handling and he should be doing them constantly. It kind of feels like he's only taking advantage of half the benefits of every area he could build himself into the King of. He has infinite endurance, and theoretically infinite firepower. Even if he's struggling with getting stable attacks out, he should be looking into weaponizing free casting and making a skill along the lines of [Supernova] which takes advantage of the mana cascade thing that was talked about when Matt and Zack first met. Just turning himself into a massive explosion of different kinds of mana. Or he could look into doing massive ritual castings that just take a simple spell so he doesnt need high precision and just doing it on a planet scale outside of his body. Or he could also abuse clones and use that to make it so he's casting 100s of spells at once rather than dozens. I know he's working on spell modifications right now but they're all geared towards increasing max throughput. Why isn't he well on his way towards custom skills like what was hinted at by that summoner they met on the path? Wasn't it just that if you made certain moves with your spirit enough that you'd make a new skill? With him modifying every skill he's had ever in the exact same way, towards channeling and higher throughput, id expect that he'd already have something semicrystalized. Idk, maybe I'm just stupid.

Ali Sha

Thank you! Loved the Tim update and really curious how he is going to tie into this overall arc. Also loving the treasure hunter life they have going on.

Alex

How would anyone ever get a chance to examine his spirit? He's probably got some of the most robust spiritual shielding in the entire Realm in the form of his divination wards.

Nyroe

If Tim follows that path for his concept, he will need to be careful. If his concept is purely defined by the way others see him and the potential that they see, then his concept could alientate him from himself. He needs to have expectations for himself and take pride when he reaches them, because otherwise his 'ideal Tim' won't be HIS ideal self, it will be other people's ideal idea of Tim.

Kain

The direction and specifics of Matt’s skill modifications have come up a lot lately. I’m still of the opinion we could see his secret get out, in a limited way, this arc and well if anyone examined his spirit and saw those modifications I have to think they are a big hint. I don’t think even his mana stone cover would work with ALL of his skills being modified to the max to increase their mana capacity.

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter!

Captain the Red Beard

Tyftc! Enjoy your break!

Jordan O'Hare
