I agree with some of the other comments, this chapter does not have a smooth flow like everything else I've read so far. I get that deeper political discussions are newer for this series but the logic didn't flow. Sentences and thoughts were choppy/poorly connected, and generally hard to follow. I'd be happy to offer suggestions if needed, as I don't want to give pointless criticism without offering something valid, but also I don't want to go to the effort if this will be lost to the internet void.

Ploddingpanda

311 should be the chapter that corresponds to book 11 chapter 1. The book/chapter breakdowns are noted in the RR description. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/40920/the-path-of-ascension

A few more edits, I had a quick check through the comments and these ones don’t seem to be mentioned yet. Well, aren’t they the definition inconspicuous. => definition of inconspicuous Matt mentally reigned in his assumptions and leaned back to listen. => “reined in” is correct here. The expression comes from horse handling, not ruling resolve the crises that looms before us. => “crises” is plural, so needs to be changed to either “crisis” or “loom” (but not both)

Parker Bond

Hey, I just signed up for this looking to read past book 10, but I don't know what chapter corresponds to chapter 1, book 11? Anyone know?

Tirinir

"I’m not suggesting we need to kill everyone, let alone anyone.” - the phrase doesn't work like that, the right way to use it is "I’m not suggesting we need to kill anyone, let alone everyone.” "inclinking" - did you mean "inkling"?

Shandlar

Dominus is a dragon and was leading the talk. Sciath interjected there and is also a dragon, therefore "other" is being used so we know its referring to Sciath and not Dominus

Shandlar

The aura enchanting revolution is the problem. If you're entire region is only allowed to farm a single advanced aura type for the next 10k years, but the enchanting industry invents 40 different aura type revolutionary inventions that become essentially required to stay competitive, the entire duchys import/export deficit goes way into the red. You'd slowly lose your entire alchemy harb farming economy to the duchy that got the exclusive light aura contract unless you pay the exorbitant import costs. This is actually a shockingly competently written chapter on such a complicated fictional, but ground macroeconomic problem.

Drew Tunison

I have no answers to fix this chapter but it doesnt have the feel it should. The dialog seems clipped and weirdly wrong when accounting for the fact that MAL have grown up a bit and as far as ascenders go are not really walking disasters. Also the government should have a legal lever to break monopolies though I am not even sure why this aura situation is bad. So maybe some information on diversity creates innovation and free choice. As far as I know any aura potion even the cheapest can pull a mortal up to immortal and from there they can break it and make their own so it doesnt really matter which they take as long as they get there.

Bacon Sir

Given how many people personally remember and talk about Georgios’ reign, it makes sense that the transfer of power was relatively recent on a high-tier scale.

Austin Gillespie

Manny’s Favorite Things hype train continues! Can’t wait for him to get back with treasures of the ages for the squad. Also crazy to consider that of his 30,000 year reign he might be gone for a significant fraction of it just delving the breach. 500 years is 1/60th of his total reign, not a small amount.

DumpsterCoffee

Oh boy. That's a can of worms if I ever saw one. The MIT license is much more popular these days, and for good reason. It looks like Titan's Torch releases their discoveries on some variant of the MIT license, too. Being a charity guild, they certainly could get away with using a GPL license, but they are pretty much the only ones who could. It would effectively lock everyone else out of working in aperology ever again: the costs are too high, and there would be zero profit to be had.

DumpsterCoffee

My biggest problem with this chapter is that it *isn't* 10 people chatting. No one is talking to anyone else. They are all dropping their monologue without respect to what anyone else is saying. As they say in the business, they're talking "at" each other instead of "to" each other. There is no back and forth, there is no mystery, no wit. It's just one long infodump that leaves out all the key parts.

Cteatus

I've thought about it some more, and I think the other issue I have with this is that there are, I think, genuinely good political moves that Matt could be making. Like why doesn't he lead the hereditary nobles in a lawsuit against the companies, and argue that their exclusivity has an outsized impact on mortal populations, so their patents on aura rifts should expire on mortal timelines. Even if the case doesn't win, its almost certain to be heard on its merits, and that would get these companies scrambling to settle. And given the array of nobles he has in front of him, he gets his choice of which kingdom to file in,.

serguzzle

The politicking is a little circular, but I think this and the previous chapter's content is much more interesting than the special realms and their gameplay quirks. Highlighting broader impact is key in all things! 500 years is wild. The books have been consistent in using this timescale, but I personally always find myself feeling like things are more reasonable if I divide every number after tier 10 by 5 or so. So, 100 years? Okay, I get it. Built careers, wandered around the empire, etc.

TFTC! I personally enjoy chapters like these which "lack action", as opposed to some of the other remarks I've read below. In my opinion these chapters are what add more depth into both the story and the world. And in the context of serial releases, I enjoy theorizing about how the future story will build upon the information presented in these chapters; while at the same time elevating the story as a whole once the subsequent building chapters are released. In theory, this chapter could probably have been compressed into a single paragraph in which Matt explains why he is currently beating the shit out of some guild leader refusing to budge. But I think that you need things like this to make the action moments matter. Personally, without an interesting world/characters/story I don't care for any form of action, regardless of how well the "scenes" are written. But conversely, I also don't care about the world/characters/story without some action, as that is my personal preference. Its this Ouroboros style loop in which the author has the unenviable responsibility of finding the balance, and somehow trying to parse out what feedback is meaningful and potentially having to attempt to cater to opposing opinions. Additionally, I think you sort of have to decide on what timespan you are working on. A complaint I saw was that this chapter was boring. And while I personally disagree, I can understand at least somewhat how it could be seen as such. If we were to isolate this chapter as a single unit of content, then yes I can see how it would be boring; as not much actually happened. But this is a setup, deepening of lore, and effectively character introductions. If this were a TV-series, this would be the opening minutes of an episode, but not the entire episode, as that is still coming in future chapters. If you were to cut out the first five minutes of a great episode from a TV-show, and form a judgement of the episode based on that, its IMDB score would be horrendous. But, if you then watched the full episode, I would find it likely that your opinion of it would improve, and the realization that the entire episode would be worse if it didn't have that part you previously didn't like in the beginning. And this is where choosing the timespan you prioritize is important. I think its difficult to cater to both chapter-by-chapter readers, and book readers. Place this chapter in the middle of a book, where in you can immediately access the payoff? And bang I believe you have the above TV-show effect. But, if you don't account for this, and only value the chapter, or the 5 minute intro, on its own? Personally, I overwhelmingly prefer when authors focus on creating the best possible final product; as opposed to attempting to maximize the enjoyment of individual chapters. For the overarching story, I genuinely believe chapters like these are very important, and are what make it interesting; otherwise I could just go read "Murderhobo's Guide to Aura Farming Weaklings". But at the same time, I do concede that in a single chapter versus single chapter comparison, chapters like these would do very poorly; there exists no universe wherein 10 people chatting could beat Matt monologuing to Mavens corpse. But, if it weren't for chapters like these, I also wouldn't care about Matt killing Maven either. Anyways, I'm done now. I didn't intend for this to be this long, I was just gonna drop my thanks and be on my way but I got carried away. Also, yes, my grammar is horrendous. I love run-on sentences, commas, and semicolons; no, I will not be changing my ways. But instead, thanks for the story, and I'm just going to keep deluding myself that it will never end ;)

Cteatus

I'm gonna be honest: if the solution was always going to be kill the exclusivity contracts and then Matt spends a bunch of mana to stabilize the economy, then I sort of wish that this chapter had more of a focus on developing the hereditary nobles as characters rather than the politics of it all.

Kasamuri

Thanks for the chapter!

TYFTC! Some edit suggestions. They may have been covered by others in the comments already: worth their efforts dwarfed anything return that could be extracted quietly from hidden rifts. -> change "anything" to "any" Ours, the Royals, the Emperor himself, or even our position will be maneuvering themselves into their best positions -> not sure of full fix, but recommend this line is reworked. The repetition of "position" is slightly janky. The increasing hierarchy at the start, followed by "or even our positions" feels off to me also. Matt stood up and leaded across the table -> "leaded" to "leaned" two of the top three aura research faculties -> "faculties" to "facilities" if they have any inclinking of actual power at all -> "inclinking" to "inkling"

The empire needs the AGPLv3 license.

Alex

Yes, aura potions give you a real, bona fide Concept, so you can go all the way to 24 after using one.

Tommy

“Opening his mouth as if Matt had just realized that his proposed solution might be the very thing they were trying to avoid, he paused, realizing why they might have come to him and Liz.” -> this reads weirdly, is the first “he” Matt? Then why does he refer to himself as Matt as if in the third person? Slightly oddly constructed sentence imo “Taking a deep breath, the other dragon glared at him” Is the “him” here Matt? Because the dragon has just been talking for a long long paragraph so using his name would make sense now. And why is it the “other” dragon? TFTC!

Jacob

I can't remember...Does the Aura potions allow someone to pass the Tier 15 bottle neck?

Thane Tuttle

I love that we're back in the Empire and getting to duchy and research guild related stuff! Two copy edit suggestions: 1. You're missing an "of" at the bottom of the 2nd paragraph. It should be "definition OF inconspicuous." 2. Further down (can't find it now), you said "inclinking" instead of "inkling."

Alex

I think you’re underestimating how rare it is for people to make a deep run on the Path. I’m pulling this number from memory here, so I can’t 100% guarantee its veracity, but I think the standard logic is that someone will complete the Path roughly once per generation (i.e. once every 30,000 years) per Great Power. Even though the Empire is producing Ascenders more frequently than any of the other Great Powers, having another promising team show up in the ~1000 years since MAL completed the Path would be absurd, especially with the restrictions that were placed on the Path by the end-of-war treaty.

Hunter Greeno

Tftc. Im liking the researching, running a dutchy and politicking world building chapters. Maybe add a timeline to tie events to since the end of the latest Empire war.

Shmigit

I think proper timeline dates would be fantastic for context of the various events going on. At this point, time really feels meaningless when decades pass by in a sentence or two.

Jsar

I really think we are going to start needing timeline dates in these chapters. We're what about a thousand years since the war now? 1/3 of the way through the peace treaty. Also... how did they not have a massive 1000 year birthday party????? That has to be a milestone worth a party of all the friends and family.

Zwil

inkling* i think is correct spelling. Also, tyftc. Some people hating about the world building politics and while i somewhat get it, i find it very interesting. something needs to happen from now until the true war and it can’t be nonstop delving chapters. guild lore, aperology, tim, growth items, etc., i personally think are great ways to keep excitement building

Sean McClain

The only issue I have with these big time jumps is I feel you need to add a paragraph or two to comment on pathers on this time, and if any new ascenders were created or at least some near ascenders. By the numbers there should be at least near ascenders leaving the path like Susan every few decades or so. As an ascender, Matt and Liz should be at least somewhat interested in that. I know the war resolution limited how mamy pathers they can have but over the 500 years there should still be promising people that Matt should take an interest in much like Duke Waters noticed them.

H3lg3

Thanks for the chapter!

C_Mantis

The vacation was about 100 years with another 400 of work.

A Flashy BR

Tyftc!!

C_Mantis

The political chapters won't be forever and hopefully people will find what follows a bit more exciting.

C_Mantis

Fixed ty

C_Mantis

Domninus is correct (according to his introduction chapter) but I fixed the others ty.

C_Mantis

What in particular? I'm happy to make edits.

C_Mantis

Good catch and fixed, he's 28

Eric Alex

Dominus is listed at two different tiers. Tier 28 early on and then tier 29 when it’s mentioned he wants to strangle Matt. “but even if the dragon hadn’t been a Tier weaker at Tier 29” Unless I’m reading that paragraph wrong and Matt’s still tier 29, but it doesn’t read clearly I think in that case.

Aaron

The vacation wasn't that long. It was less than 10 years if you add it up. The time slip is at the very end as Mattis studying liquid mana decades pass and 500 years is put forward.

DumpsterCoffee

Incomprehensible.

nolan saylor

More to read! Thanks Mantis! Thanks Dae and editors! I think Matt is missing how this issue also could grow ties between the younger generation, if done right. MAL is one of the few Ascenders who seems willing to politick. A generation of nobles with friendly ties to the Ascenders allows for a stronger Empire. Matt went and suggested the Ascender route, sorta as Manny mentioned he could. Create a problem/ solution, and let Manny fix it. The previous generation letting things fester for the next generation. That NeVer happens irl. Though admittedly amusing that it still happens even when the previous generation is immortal. The act of Ascension removing urgency in the same way people irl knowing they will die removes the impetus to act on something that won't affect them. Eleazar Rajagukguk, what a splendidly horrendous name. Wonderful. I do look forward to Matt's reputation growing. He may not be loved by those entrenched in power, but he will be respected. Those growing will love him, though they are the future generation and not as useful in the true war. Matt is going to leave an impact for more than just his mana. Good for him. Well, it might be time for the shadow cabal to make another appearance, in action if not in a chapter.

Akkristor

Inevitably, it comes down to ‘might makes right’ >>>dividend<<< by how much of that might we are willing to use. Should be 'divided' by not 'dividend' by?

RiverJ

I was thoroughly bored by this chapter.

Raymond Lenihan

I don't think there is even a single full generation yet, isn't a generation for immortals considered a thousand or more years?

fruit dragon

On the public relations front, aren't there a couple generations of immortals at this point that know they owe Matt their path to immortality? And they are most likely not in the breach right now. So Matt has crazy political capital for this no

thisisniall

Well that (time) escalated quickly

Alex

I believe it's Dominus, not Domninus. Kiri's name also switches between Winitata and Winiata, but I'm not sure which one of those is correct.

Cloud

Ditto.

Nathaniel France

I dig it. Though the reference of their behavior in the breach seems a little odd, as outside the crystal planet I’d say the Ascender team were downright polite compared to how Ascenders are generally depicted. (Allie notwithstanding)

Aaron

He’d been back in the Empire for five hundred years?
