Barry obviously went through the mental break. So, he may not know what the reality is around him. He just knows he cares for these people. Or thinks he does. I've seen this show multiple times and I don't think I noticed what song was playing when Barry's girlfriend was in the car with her mom at the Drive-thru: "It must have been love, but it's over now". While she's screaming, and her mom has the straight face. Super funny.
