The men who were at the moat were not prepared to face a siege from thousand of men. Not every one of them was an archer who would have a major advantage at the moat. I doubt the archers even package enough arrows to even fight the Ironborn off for more than a night or two. Why would they have the supplies for a siege in this case

Eric

The iron born would be attacking a prepared and defended position that had prior knowledge of the attack. I would assume seeing as this was an actively defended military garrison that the terrain around the castle would have favored the defenders. The Ironborn may have had a numerical advantage but they are also raiders and pirates so they likely would have limited knowledge on how to take a heavily defended location especially being on an extremely tight time frame. In addition to that they’re having to come via boat would mean they have limited room with much of it going to food, this would mean they likely wouldn’t have the equipment that was typically needed for a siege. They are in a hostile environment with enemies breathing down their necks. By allowing them to take this position and leaving what I would assume was a massive amount of supplies (prepared for multi year winters for several hundred troops). A smart commander would have had their men ready and ambushed them when they tried to attack what they perceived to be an unaware target. They could have had devastating losses on the lightly armored iron born and could have smashed the morale. Even if they eventually lost this would have made the recapture much easier. This would have been even more damaging if the initial ambush was staged to target the various leaders

He had 200 men in the castle. The Ironborn would arrive there a few days before Harry does or any reinforcements will. While yes the men holding the castle would do some damage to the Ironborn they are outnumbered very heavily. I doubt 200 men are able to defeat 3000, especially without the presence of a good commander. Perhaps if the moat was repaired and had more towers facing the north where the Ironborn will attack. That's being outnumbered 15 to 1.

100%. Author/Harry is running from the narrative that the ironborn WILL take the castle if left alone. They won’t.

Sorry to post before even finishing the chapter, you may have already answered this question but if the castle was specifically designed to easily allow a smaller force to defend against a far larger force then why would you abandon it instead of garrisoning it with some of Howlands forces as you wait for reinforcements. The fact that the iron born really don’t have the ability to siege it properly and need to capture it quickly knowing they are in hostile territory with an army on the way. Seems like you could really make them pay while also utilizing the cranogmen to harass them while they camp. This doesn’t make much tactical sense if they know the enemy is on the way and they have time to garrison it more
