Chicxulub Impact
🕑 Added 2024-05-13 18:07:30 +0000 UTCThe Chicxulub crater (IPA: [t͡ʃikʃuˈluɓ] ⓘ cheek-shoo-LOOB) is an impact crater buried underneath the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Its center is offshore, but the crater is named after the onshore community of Chicxulub Pueblo.[3] It was formed slightly over 66 million years ago when a large meteorite, about ten kilometers (six miles) in diameter, struck Earth. The crater is estimated to be 200 kilometers (120 miles) in diameter and 20 kilometers (12 miles) in depth. It is the second largest confirmed impact structure on Earth, and the only one whose peak ring is intact and directly accessible for scientific research.[4]

I find it hard to believe that Eli doesn't already have multiple charts, graphs, and 3D renderings of their "final moments"

Whats interesting is that it is now being proposed that the Deccan Traps eruptions changed the climate enough and that the Chicxulub impact just finished them off all at once. Some more recent modeling is suggesting that the Chicxulub impact wasn't enough on its own to wipe out the dinosaurs so thoroughly and something else was required. The millennia of massive continuous eruptions from the Deccan Traps would easily have strained ecosystems to or even past the breaking point and species were already dying off. The impact definitely explains the rapid extinction at the boundary, but without the Traps it wouldn't have been such a complete extinction event.

But the dinosaurs got too big and fat, so they died and turned into oil, then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes...
