Hmm, that can be read more than one way. I believe one way to read it is that your actions are so powerful that we know you mean business without you saying a word. That would be a compliment. Another way to read it would not be a compliment. You’re acting so outrageous and obnoxious that we can’t focus on your words. My feeling is that Emerson was saying to work hard, keep your thoughts to yourself, and be humble.

I’ve known people for whom this was true on both sides of the coin. I’ve known the snakes who speak nice words but you knew better than believe a word, and I’ve know great people of character, who no matter their words you trusted them completely. I hope and pray that I am known as a man of love and truth despite my flawed words.
